MARKET DEFINITION — ONLINE CONTINUING

AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Online continuing and professional education consists of online courses on

further education and professional development — that are taken by

people beyond enrollment age for school education — to enhance their

skill sets and career prospects.

Continuing education consists of postsecondary learning, which does not

fall into formal education. It does not include the following:

1. Formal professional education — where students enroll for a

specialized education, which grants them a license of degree to

practice a profession such as law.

2. Formal adult education — which is imparted to students beyond

the enrollment age, to make them literate.

3. Correspondence education — which includes education through

sale of study material, such as books, CDs, and DVDs.

Online continuing and professional learning comprises of both non–credit,

as well as degree credit courses, which students can take through the

internet. The courses are imparted by educational institutions through

their websites, as well as through websites, working as marketplaces.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Volume of online continuing and professional learning consists of the

number of students who are enrolled, or are expected to get enrolled in at

least one of the courses falling under the category.

The volume is estimated as per the following definitions:

Serviceable Available Market (SAM) — it represents the number of

students that have enrolled, or are expected to enroll in at least

one of the courses.

Serviceable Obtainable Market (SOM) — it represents number of

students that are expected to complete the online courses and pay

for them.

Market size of online continuing and professional learning in terms of value

is calculated by multiplying SOM by average ticket size of courses.

Conversion ratios from SAM to SOM are calculated with the help of

government data, as well as primary research interviews with course

providers and marketplaces.

The market size is estimated by the demand of online courses and not the

supply — due to the business model of online courses. The online courses

are not specific to a particular geography, and can be taken by almost

anyone having access to the internet and ability to understand language of

the course. Therefore estimating the size through suppliers leads to an

incorrect market landscape by a particular geography.
