The Organic Trio’s latest disc, Saturn’s Spell, takes the classic Hammond B3/Guitar/Drums format to orbits of musical exploration not often traversed is this setting. Recorded by an all-star production team with over 50 Grammys between them, the ten (very) original compositions radiate from your speakers with a magnificent detail that intricately captures the nuances of the performances, and the powerful emotional intent of the players. Saturn’s Spell brings a compositional freshness and an expanded dynamic range to the Hammond trio, sometimes invoking the bombast of Tony William’s Lifetime or the harmonic sophistication of Larry Young, yet sounding like no other organ trio that has come before.

Johnny Young Johnny Young kicks off the album with a smoothly swinging ode from organist Jean-Yves Jung. The band’s homage to the organ trio tradition; Johnny Young is one cool cat.

The Place is Now Drummer Paul Wiltgen gets his rock on with this composition. Seeger’s guitar soars through the extended melody and Wiltgen’s solo near the end of the piece is a super-nova of percussion, the stuff that drum legends are made of.

Quirky Another Wiltgen piece, Quirky is a solidly funky number with some unusual twists and turns.

The Flower The Flower is a smooth cruising tune with a signature lyrical melody from guitarist Seeger. All three of the band members turn in exquisitely crafted and musical solos on this track. Just add the convertible and an empty highway!

Organ Donor This is a cut you could only get from a band with a New Orleans soul; its lilting five-four beat swings out with just the right amount of grease. Seeger blows some sweet and sweaty bluesy lines and Jung follows it up with classic Hammond tones and solid swagger on this original Witlgen gem.
