FALL 2015

on eOUR NEW ERA

Artist rendering of the new Joseph Brant Hospital

DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,

The fall is upon us once again, and the hustle and bustle that comes with a new school year, and a return to routine after summers filled with vacations and sunshine. At Joseph Brant Hospital, the fall is already shaping up to be incredibly busy as work continues on the Redevelopment and Expansion project. Visit the hospital website at www.josephbranthospital.ca for updates, including a live construction cam and a virtual tour of our new Hospital.

At the Foundation, we’re looking to continue to build on success and are currently updating our strategic plan. Our existing plan has helped us to achieve many of our goals over the past three years, including our focus on providing an excellent donor and volunteer experience. We’ve looked for new and innovative ways to engage donors. We have introduced two

new signature events, our CAAAR! 3 on 3 Road Hockey Tournament, and our High Falutin’ Hoedown on Saturday, November 14th at Mercedes-Benz Burlington.

It is incredibly exciting to announce that Our New Era Campaign currently sits at 73% of our $60 million goal. Your support of the campaign has been tremendous and the transformation in healthcare that is underway in Burlington would not be possible without you.

Though we have much to celebrate, our work is not done. In an effort to help us reach our goal, the Longo’s Family Charitable Foundation have launched a Matching Gift Challenge, and all donations made until December 31 will be matched dollar for dollar – up to $500,000.

This is the perfect time to consider making a gift to the Our New Era Campaign, or if

you’ve given previously consider making your annual gift as it will have an even greater impact.

We share the same vision for the best health care possible right here in our community, and with your continued support we will make this vision a reality.

Sincerely,

THE LONGO FAMILY HAS BEEN A LONG- TIME SUPPORTER OF JOSEPH BRANT HOSPITAL. SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY WERE ACTUALLY BORN AT OUR HOSPITAL, AND TERESA LONGO CONTINUES TO MAKE ANNUAL VISITS TO THE HOSPITAL DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, BRINGING GIFTS AND JOY TO THOSE WHO ARE UNABLE TO BE WITH THEIR FAMILIES.

On September 10, members of the Longo family were at Joseph Brant Hospital to announce the launch of the Longo`s Family Charitable Foundation Community Matching Gift Challenge. All gifts made to the Our New Era Campaign until December 31, 2015 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Longo’s, up to $500,000.

“Longo’s has been a part of the community for nearly 45 years and we’re proud to be a long-standing partner of the Joseph Brant Hospital. We were supporters when it was

a small, community-based hospital and we were just a small fruit stand on Plains Road and we’re thrilled to continue to be a part of the hospital’s expansion,” said Rosanne Longo, Longo’s Spokesperson & Chair of the Longo’s Family Charitable Foundation.

“We invite the community to join us in support of the growth plans and hope you will be inspired by this matching challenge. For Longo’s it’s simply about doing the right thing and helping families experience the best health care close to home.”

In 1956, Longo’s planted their roots at Yonge St. and Castlefield Ave. in Toronto with its first fruit market. Today, the family-owned organization operates 29 locations across Toronto and the GTA and employs nearly 6,000 team members. Inspired by founders Tommy, Joe and Gus Longo, the company is committed to a Fresh Tradition and exceeding customer expectations by offering the best food experience, quality and value to every customer, every time.

The philanthropy of the Longo’s Family Charitable Foundation represents a legacy of commitment and investment in our communities that began with the founders of Longo’s who believed in giving something, even when they had nothing to give. They believe that family values are essential to community growth and by investing in and maintaining a leadership position of community involvement, they will help ensure the health and well-being of our communities will be sustained for years to come. Last year, Longo’s and the Longo’s Family Charitable Foundation donated nearly $1.4 million to local charities, organizations and sponsored events.

Construction UpdatesOUR NEW HOSPITAL IS TAKING SHAPE RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES.

Once the foundation for the new tower was complete in July, 2015, the tower has quickly started to rise. On average, it takes the EllisDon construction team just three weeks to pour the concrete and form the columns for each level of the new tower. That means by December 2015 the slab for Level 7 is expected to be complete.

JBH is excited to welcome the Burlington community to the new patient tower in 2018.

Until then, follow the progress of construction by visiting www josephbranthospital.ca. Enjoy a live look at the site with our construction cam, and follow the progress through our bi-weekly updates.

We encourage you to tell us what you think of the project. Tweet @Jo_Brant using, #HereWeGrow. You can also call the Redevelopment Hotline: 905-632-3737 x 2136 or email [email protected].

Construction highlights and milestones:

• Over 200 construction workers on site - 2 crane towers on site

• Completion of foundation with 180 caissons (structure that is drilled down to bedrock to support the tower) and 160 foundation pile caps (footings)

• Underground plumbing, electrical work and installation of Cupolex (mitigation system) is finished

• The slabs for the Main Level, the Podium (Levels 1 and 2), Levels 4 and 5 are complete and exterior enclosure has begun

• The slabs for Levels 6 & 7 will be finished by December 2015

Burlington Golf and Country Club – 30th AnniversaryThe Burlington Golf and Country Club celebrated a milestone in August with their 30th Annual Charity Golf Tournament in support of the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation. And they celebrated with their most successful year to date, raising $85,000 towards the Our New Era Campaign.

Golfers were treated to a special surprise performance by the Burlington Teen Tour Band, who marched up the 17th fairway and into view of the unsuspecting tournament attendees.

The performance was a throwback to the original tournament, back in 1985 which also featured a performance by the Burlington Teen Tour Band.

Over 30 years, the BGCC Charity Golf Tournament has raised almost $1.4 Million for our Hospital, and we are truly grateful for their continued support. Special thanks to Tournament chair John Stookes and the entire organizing committee.

A Tribute Donation is a meaningful way to remember a loved one. By donating online, you may choose your own e-card for the family. If donating by mail or phone, Joseph Brant will send the family a letter on your behalf. Your donation amount will be kept confidential.

Families can also request donations be made in memory of their loved one, even creating personal memory pages to make online giving easy.

Special occasions such as weddings, showers, anniversaries, birthdays, christenings, baptisms or bar/bat mitzvahs can be celebrated with a donation to Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation. Options include:

• Donations in lieu of favours for guests• Requests for donations instead of gifts for

the host• Donations in lieu of wedding, birthday or

other gifts

Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation offers a beautiful, embossed table card or a recognition certificate to inform your guests that you have supported your Community Hospital by making a donation in their honour.

A gift of Stock and Securities

Giving stock and securities is a special way of helping us give the best care to our community. There are also personal benefits to making a gift of securities to Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation. In 2006, the Federal Government removed the capital gains tax on stocks and securities donated to registered charities. This means you can significantly decrease the after-tax cost of giving and receive a tax receipt for the closing value of the securities on the date of the gift.

JOSEPH BRANT HOSPITAL HAS BEEN A PART OF BETTY ANNE MILLAR’S LIFE FOR OVER 40 YEARS. SHE HAS SERVED VOLUNTEER TERMS ON BOTH THE HOSPITAL BOARD OF GOVERNORS AND THE FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS, INCLUDING HAVING PLAYED AN INSTRUMENTAL ROLE IN RAISING THE INITIAL CAPITAL TO ESTABLISH THE FOUNDATION THROUGH A COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER.

It was September 2012, as Betty Anne was sitting in the Family Room of the ICU, reality hit her with the recognition that her life was about to change forever. Her husband, Murray, was in the Intensive Care Unit and passed away three days later. For Betty Anne, supporting the Our New Era campaign is a way to honour her husband.

“After donating The Quiet Room in the ICU in memory of Murray, I decided to donate The Family Room as well,” said Betty Anne. “This was a unique opportunity to donate in each of our names and have two adjoining rooms that will provide comfort to friends and families when their loved ones are ill.”

For Betty Anne, the ability to make her gift through a donation of stocks made it easy.

“It is simple; transfer the stocks, receive a tax receipt and pay no capital gains tax,” she said.

In addition, Betty Anne has chosen to support Joseph Brant Hospital through a legacy gift.

“I have committed a Transformational Gift in my estate plans to our new hospital,” she said. “I encourage others to consider a gift to Our New Era. It is an investment to our Community for future generations.”
