ATMs are the best way to get money * more on this in a minute.

Do NOT bring traveler’s checks.

Notify your bank or credit card company that you’ll be abroad. Tell them each country you will be traveling through and the dates.

Bring the equivalent of $50 in the currency of your arrival destination for use on the first day.

Spending money

Page 9: ONE MONTH UNTIL WE GO! 1 month until we leave!!. Our Confirmed Tour: Global Volunteers – Dare to Dream Our Confirmed Departure Date: June 27, 2015 Our.

EF usually recommends arriving with about $50 in the local currency, to comfortably get through the first day or two. The Dominican Republic uses the Peso. It comes in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500,1000 and 2000 and there are coins in 1 and 5. Some tourist establishments or street vendors may accept US Dollars or other currencies, but the US Dollar is not legal tender in the country. Shops, Supermarkets and any other kind of retail establishment will not accept any other currency than the Peso.

ATMs will be available at the airport. Some areas will be remote, without access to ATMs. ATMs in country will dispense money in Pesos. Travelers should alert their banks/credit cards that they will be traveling and using their cards abroad, so they don’t put a security hold on their cards.

• In order to avoid massive roaming data charges, it is best to put devices on “airplane mode” (wifi only) for the full duration of the tour.

• Wifi outside of the U.S. is not as prevalent and not as strong – do NOT expect the same amount of access that you are used to at home.

• Even if wifi is advertised and available in certain areas (hotels, cafés, etc.) it can be slower than we are used to and/or there may often be a charge for users to connect.

• When large groups arrive at a hotel all at once and all attempt access, it can easily overwhelm the standard bandwidth.

Tips for PARENTS while kids are traveling

• “No news is good news”• Your kids are out having fun and exploring a new place! Often times the last thing they are

thinking about is checking in with their parents at home • They will be making the most of their time with a full itinerary so do not expect to hear from

your child every day.

• EF has schools and offices all over the world, and trained staff members on the ground

o If there is any emergency on tour, you’ll hear from the Group Leader or a member of EF’s Emergency Service and Support Team.

o If you have a family emergency at home, call EF’s Emergency Service and Support Team. Otherwise, no news is good news!

• Keep a color photocopy of your child’s passport at home• This can come in handy if it gets lost or stolen abroad
