• We’ll have “Signature” items, such as 10-ounce Par 5 Hamburgers and 6-ounce Par 3 Hamburgers.

• Lobster is returning! I’ve heard several Members fondly recall the famous “Lobster Savannah.” Well, wait no longer.

• Bar and food service will now start at the same time, 11:00 a.m. Now that I’ve got your attention, see the story on page 3, “Enhanced

Food Service Debuts This Season,” for the details. And remember, our menu will evolve with our members’ desires, so please give us your preferences and recipe suggestions.

I want to add a special note of thanks to Chef Jim Litman and our lead Cook, Brett Mayer, for their great ideas and support in this process. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with them.

There’s much more to come, including food and beverage service at the Pro Shop and other golf-experience enhancements, but more on those initiatives as we move forward.

In the meantime, I encourage you to drop by for a cup of coffee and chat about what you’d like to see. I also welcome your email suggestions at [email protected].

Let’s have a great 2013 season. I hope to see you often at Woods Hole Golf Club.

All the best,

Michael Lawrence

Michael G. Jones of Falmouth was appointed to WHGC’s Board of Governors in March. The Board of Governors oversees all operations of the club. Michael, an attorney who is Senior Vice president and Chief Legal Officer at Cape Cod Healthcare, Inc., said he was pleased to be appointed and is looking forward to helping the club in addressing its current challenges and in planning for the future.

Members since 2009, Michael and his wife, Dr. Dale Weldon, are relatively new to the club. While they are kept busy by their two children, Mary Kate, 13, and Connor, 11, Michael and Dale still make time to play golf together, something they’ve done all their married life. “It’s good quality time,” Michael said. Dale is also a member of the 18 Hole Ladies group, and Michael tries to get out on the course a couple of times a week in the season.

“WHGC is a special place,” he said, “not only because of the course and stunning views, but also because there is tremendous camaraderie here. It is a very friendly and welcoming community.”

Michael is ready to get to work. “We live close to the club and are here year round, so I would like to help make a difference in the club’s future.” Then he added with a slight laugh, “Because I plan to play golf until my dying days.”

On Thursday, May 30, the 9-Hole Lady Spring Season opens for Informal Play. Members should register at the Pro Shop at 9:00 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. tee-off. The opening day of the Summer Season will be Thursday, June 6, with a Scramble and Luncheon scheduled. Be aware that the arrival time has changed and members should register at the Pro Shop at 8:30 a.m. with a 9:00 a.m. tee-off.

It is always fun to participate in the summer golf match-ups, such as the Member Guest Scramble and Luncheon, the Bring-a-Friend Scramble, and the 9-Hole Women hosting the Senior-Seniors.

Join us! New members to the 9-Hole Division are always welcome. If you’d like to join, contact our President, Brenda Reardon, at [email protected].

Come and be part of the fun and relaxing golf with a great group of 9 Hole Ladies.

9-Hole Lady Season Opens in May

9-Hole Ladies Spring and Summer Schedule

• Thursday May 30: Informal Play. Pro shop registration at 9:00 a.m. Tee-off at 9:30 a.m.

• Thursday, June 6: Scramble/Luncheon. Pro shop registration at 8:30 a.m. Shotgun at 9:00 a.m. Lunch to follow golf.

In response to suggestions from the Member Survey, we are enhancing food service beginning this spring. Here are the details:

Single, Full-Service Menu: Chef Jim is working on a single, full-service menu, with a daily Soup du Jour and one or two daily specials. (Don’t worry about the Clam Chowder…it stays on every day!) Member favorites like filet mignon, rib-eye steaks and BLTs will be available all day. There will be no more open hours where wrapped sandwiches are all that are avail-able. When we’re open, the full menu is available.

We expect the streamlining gained from these changes will make service-to-kitchen coordina-tion less complicated. That, in addition to increased training and supervision, will result in improved service.

Signature Menu Items: We are introducing “Signature” menu

items that we can brag about! Look forward to a 10-ounce, Par 5 Hamburger and 6-ounce, Par 3 Hamburger, made from our own fresh, triple-ground custom beef with custom-made bun. They will be accompanied by skin-on French fries or sweet potato fries served with honey-mustard sauce. The price will be $7.00 for the Par 5 and $6.00 for the Par 3.

Lobster Is Returning!: We are bringing back Maine Lobster as a dinner special, and Chef Jim will be introducing Lobster Savannah as a daily special. Finally, on the Thursdays in June, make sure you stop in for our All-You-Can-Eat- Lobster-Night.

Simplified Hours: We will be simplifying the dining hours to reduce the confusion of members and staff. Bar and food service will now start at the same time, 11:00 a.m.

are working to make those a reality. The Board of Governors met on February 25 to review options. The Long Range Planning Committee; Sasaki Associates; and Ron Forse of Forse Design Inc., our golf course architect, were present.

Forse presented ideas regarding alternatives for improving the driving range and creating a substantial short game practice area. The plans are being refined, and preliminary estimates of cost have been developed.

Additionally, the Long Range Planning Committee has continued discussions with Sasaki Associates regarding the overall WHGC land plan. This includes the strong interest of our members in improving or rebuilding our clubhouse. Sasaki has presented its views regarding size, siting, access, storage and parking. The Long Range Planning Committee is reviewing architects.

These matters are extremely important to the future of WHGC. No decisions or significant financial commitment will be made unless, and until, there is a full discussion and broad support within the membership. Discussions will be based upon a comprehensive facilities plan and a specific financing plan. Meetings will be scheduled to begin these discussions over coming months as more of our members return to the area.

I look forward to a most enjoyable and productive 2013 season and to seeing each of you at WHGC. On behalf of the Board, thank you for your continued participation and support.

The fall issue of On Course explained new Senior Membership qualifications using a combination of a member’s years of membership and age as the new “90 Rule” for 2013 Senior Membership transfers.

Nineteen Regular/Associate members have transferred to Senior Membership as a result of this new “90 Rule.” These Senior membership transfers, resignations and other membership classification transfers have allowed the addition of 22 new Associates from August 2012 through February 2013.

New Associate Members elected for 2013 are listed in this issue. Please give them a warm welcome!

The combined prospective new-member pipeline now contains 14 names (11 Candidates and three Applicants). We are optimistic that Candidates will complete applications soon, thus enabling the Board to fill Associate membership vacancies.

We are also delighted with a 100 percent increase in Junior Members during 2012, from five to 10.

The Membership Committee is looking forward to new ideas and ways to promote WHGC so that we may sustain a full, robust, and active membership. We continue to ask you to encourage friends, relatives or business associates to seriously consider The Woods Hole Golf Club as their Cape Cod golf home.
