SYNOPSIS Once is a powerful and moving novel. Set in

occupied Poland during the Second World War, it is narrated by Felix, a young Jewish boy. Felix has been left in an orphanage by his parents, who are booksellers, and must pretend he is Catholic. As Felix tries to make sense of occupied Poland in 1942 from a child’s point of view, the reader follows him, aghast at the realities around him, yet uplifted by his positive outlook and ability to bring out the best in people.

Context• People often burn books for ideological reasons.

The Nazis, under the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler, burned books starting with the destruction of 25,000 volumes on May 10, 1933. They burned books that were considered "degenerate" or not in line with what they considered to be "Aryan" or German culture. Among the books the Nazis burned were those by Jews and authors such as Ernest Hemingway, Jack London and Helen Keller, whom the Third Reich criticised for her activism with the disabled, her championing of better working conditions for industrial workers and her promotion of voting rights for women.

Jewish ghettos in Poland• Millions of Jews lived in eastern Europe. After

Germany invaded Poland in 1939, more than two million Polish Jews came under German control. After Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, several million more Jews came under Nazi rule. The Germans aimed to control this sizable Jewish population by forcing Jews to reside in marked-off sections of towns and cities the Nazis called "ghettos" or "Jewish residential quarters." Altogether, the Germans created at least 1,000 ghettos in occupied territories. The largest ghetto was in Warsaw, the Polish capital, where almost half a million Jews were confined.
