Carus’ home base is on the Åland Islands, a major ferry hub in the middle of the Baltic Sea. These are islands with a long history of international shipping tradi-tions; from the era of transporting wheat from Australia to Europe in clipper ships to today’s modern ferry businesses. Maritime trans-port of both people and freight is essential to those living and work-ing on the islands. We are proud to be advancing those shipping traditions into the digital world. Our employees and the society we live in know what shipping is all about and this helps us to un-derstand the needs and challenges of our clients wherever they oper-ate in the world.

A lifelong partnershipWe pride ourselves on being more than just an IT software provider; we are a true business partner. We know that our clients and their customers rely on our sys-tems every day of the year and we work hard to ensure that we make

their lives easier. In partnership with our clients we continuously evolve our systems and services.

Executive ConsultingWith the global spread of the passenger vessel industry it can be a challenge to find the right business expertise locally to suit the very specialised tasks and roles involved in running a successful ferry organisation. So Carus have a team of some of the most re-spected ferry experts on our con-sulting panel, all have operated at boardroom level coupled with hands-on experience to assist ferry operators with short, medium or long-term projects when com-panies do not have the resources readily available.

Carus in 2016Since the last Ferry Shipping Con-ference, we are proud to welcome Condor Ferries on-board as our newest client, joining the line-up of our clients who serve more than 30 million passengers and five million vehicles every year

across four continents. Carus purchased Quintek Sys-

tems, one of the leading providers of on-board POS systems to the ferry industry. Quintek has been renamed Carus Retail and the Point of Sale software is integrat-ed in the Carus Systems Platform, which enables the customer jour-ney to be joined up.

In addition to our existing office in Åland, Finland, we have now established further support offices in North America and the UK. Our globally based clients can now access our manned support day and night during the working week - you could say Carus never sleeps!

About CarusUsing our specialised business consulting or our IT software so-lutions for reservations, ticketing, on-board sales, information and entertainment, check-in, boarding control, relations and business in-telligence, you can be assured you have a partner who fully under-stands your business.

At Carus we live and breathe ferries Condor Liberation

At DNV GL we are continu-ally looking for way to help our customers advance their businesses. Ferry operators have been amongst the first in the industry to embrace new technolo-gies in order to make their vessels more efficient, cost effective and reduce emissions. In fact, in the face of stricter emissions regulations in Emission Control Areas (ECAs), we have seen ferry operators go be-yond what was necessary to achieve compliance and venture into new territories.

Recent developments in battery technology and ship electrifica-tion mean that electric ships and hybrid ships with energy storage in large batteries with optimised power control can significantly reduce fuel costs, maintenance and emissions. These technologies can also increase a ship’s responsive-ness and improve both regularity and safety in critical situations. Power generation units can be smaller or fewer and optimised for a more average (not peak) load, and thereby reducing investment

costs. Batteries can store energy harvested from waste heat recov-ery, regenerative braking of cranes and renewable energy. Addition-ally, they can improve propulsion systems based on LNG and other environmental friendly fuels and improve the performance of emis-sion abatement technologies.

At DNV GL we believe that the ground work has been laid for batteries to thrive in shipping. In 2015 we saw the delivery of the world’s first large fully electric vessel Ampere. Owned and operated by Norled and designed and construct-ed by Fjellstrand, the DNV GL classed car ferry is able to carry 120 cars and 360 passengers across the Sognefjord between the villages of Lavik and Oppedal in Norway. Pow-ered by a 1MWh lithium-polymer battery pack, which can be charged in 10 minutes, Ampere makes this crossing 34 times a day. The vessel is a great example of how the indus-try can use existing technologies to improve its impact on the envi-ronment, while at the same time maintaining economic operations.

Compared to a standard diesel ferry serving the same route, the Ampere saves about one million litres of fuel annually, as well as preventing 2,640 tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Emissions of particulate matter, NOx and SOx are also eliminated. In eco-nomic terms, battery hybridisation of ferries can provide potential fuel cost savings of 10% to 30%, with a payback time of three to five years, while all-electric ferries can produce fuel cost savings of 50% to 80%.

DNV GL has established the full range of tools and of services to assist our clients to develop both new-build and retrofit hybrid and battery solutions. Some examples are our Battery Rules and Battery Guideline. We offer Battery Ready services, type approval and classifi-cation, technical/economic analyses, risk analyses, battery service life and optimisation analyses, ship perform-ance instrumentation, measure-ments and analyses, technology qualification and hardware-in-the-loop testing of Battery Management Systems.
