eck let’s face it I love parties, but if you ask me birthdays are the best. They are an opportunity to reflect on the past year, celebrate all of your

great accomplishments and set goals for the next year. My friend, Jimmy Baggs hit the big 4-0 last month and has created a unique personal challenge, that I don’t mind helping him accomplish, involving his two favorite loves; running and beer.

It is pretty simple really. His challenge over the year is to run at least a mile and to drink a different beer for 365 straight days. He hopes to tally at least 1,500 miles and of course 365 distinctive frosty beverages. Now you see why I am happy to help.

Don’t worry, we plan to cover his trials and tribulations in On Your Left! as well as on OUR FACEBOOK PAGE. Please submit your beer recommendations too! The only criteria is that it must be available in a bottle as he is marking his daily mileage on each one and collecting each one on a shelf in the garage.

It is unique personal challenges born from another trip around the sun that fuel my love for birthdays. In October each year, I like to celebrate some pretty amazing birthdays and visit one of my favorite running spots in the world. If you know me you will know where to find me!

Also this month, we will be rocking as we celebrate DFWRUNS 4th Birthday! Looking back over the past four years, I am amazed at the growth of the active lifestyle. I see more people, young and old, families, friends, corporations, stores, apparel lines, shoes, bikes, boot camps, fitness centers (I could go on and on) springing up all over the country.

CATCH US!(IF YOU CAN)

Like all great things it took some time but I think we are getting the message that we, especially the younger generations, as Americans need to exercise more. So thanks to everyone who has inspired themselves or others to get off the couch and get moving.

This growth also fueled DFWRUNS over the past four years and I am so proud of what our team has accomplished. We have big things

in store for our next lap around the sun and I hope you stay tuned and involved. After all, you are our clients’ customers which ultimately makes you our customer. You are the reason we create matchless programs like DFWRUNS

Birthday Bandits. No, it is not just a reason for us to party! If you haven’t yet, check it out at DFWRUNS.com/birthday-bandits to register (it is FREE). Each month we celebrate your birthday with a run and an interesting gift.

How will you celebrate? We are celebrating DFWRUNS birthday this month not by having a party (sorry, but we might run some goats) and no, we don’t want any presents from you, but instead are giving you presents! Kind of a reverse celebration… hmmm not a bad idea, a reverse your age birthday run… sorry let me get back on track.

We have collected 31 amazing presents from our clients and partners (HUGE THANK YOU) and each day in August we are going to give one of them away. How are we going to do it? I am glad you asked.

At 4:00 PM each day we will draw a lucky winner’s name from our database of runners who have registered for one of the events that we are marketing or operating around the country. Check out them all out and get registered at DFWRUNS.com/events.

We will profile each gift and announce the daily winner from OUR FACEBOOK PAGE. We are giving concert tickets, restaurant gift certificates, running shoes, training sessions...and the big prize, a run down the KATY Trail with Jimmy Baggs that includes a post run beer at the Ice House. So don’t wait, get signed up today and help us celebrate!

ust as it seemed summer had only just begun and September was so far away, cancer may also appear as a far-flung and distant peril. As September

comes into view, DFWRUNS will focus on our clients who raise awareness on breast cancer and prostate cancer. Prepare with us for September, by learning more about The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge race series and the new adventure race series, The Juggernaut, benefitting Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Both of these national events are major fundraisers for cancer research and testing. We at DFWRUNS are putting up some big mileage as we travel to multiple cities across our Olympic Gold USA to promote and oversee operations of these events and hope you’ll run with us toward a cancer free horizon.

THE JUGGERNAUT

In collaboration with its Nashville Affiliate, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® will launch The Juggernaut in Nashville on September 1, 2012 at Tap Root Farm.

The event is the first in what will become a national “mud run” series aimed at providing a challenging, fun experience for participants while raising money in support of the fight against breast cancer. “With the help of its supporters and volunteers, Susan G. Komen has passionately led the fight against breast cancer on the local and global level for thirty years. The Juggernaut mud run series not only illustrates our enthusiasm for the adventure race genre, but also our

intensifying commitment to the fight against breast cancer. We couldn’t be more excited to be the inaugural hosts for this great race,” said Patty Harman, executive director of Susan G. Komen’s Greater Nashville Affiliate. The series will next set up in Oklahoma Sept. 29 before heading Texas bound!

Squeaky Wheel Gets the GreaseThe Compliments Department is Now Open

he COMPLAINTS DEPARTMENT has been replaced with the COMPLIMENTS DEPARTMENT! Ever hear the phrase,

“Squeaky wheel gets the grease”?As you know DFWRUNS manages events around

the country. We work with cities, large and small. One of the comments we consistently hear from them is that the number of COMPLAINTS they get are enormous. Meaning citizens and businesses are complaining about streets being closed or blocked because of an active lifestyle event. This effects you as it is one of the things that preventse us from designing new and interesting courses.

We feel a majority of these complaints are, well, HOGWASH, because we know active lifestyle events not only raise property values, drive customers and awareness of local business and increase the quality of life for all citizens. In addition most of the events we touch are so early in the morning that impact on traffic and businesses is minimal. Stepping down from our soapbox now...

There are many more positives too, we are sure you know them but a lot of the cities are not listening (because our wheels aren’t squeaky enough) so we are asking you for your help to shut down the COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT!

Yep another strange concept, we want and need to hear your COMPLIMENTS about active lifestyle events. Help us and be proactive by filling out our COMPLIMENTS FORM after every race, even it if it is not one DFWRUNS markets or manages!

t’s no secret that runners like beer. But nothing tops the hops like a really fun run and a really great beer! Now that the August heat beats down onto the asphalt early we’ve started hitting the road at the earlier time of 8am so

get there in plenty of time to sign in! As usual, the run is free but for the cost of only $10 runners and walkers will enjoy a delicious hot breakfast, receive a free Rahr pint glass and refreshing free tastings all before others start lining up to get in the door. DFWRUNS will pour our passion for running into every consecutive Saturday from August 18 until race day (September 26).

Come out on August 18 to get your beer belly in shape for the 3rd Annual Rahr Oktoberfest 5K and while you’re there, take advantage of the special registration fee we’re offering only to our social run participants. You can register for the race at a discounted price of $30.

So put down the cup of coffee and pick up something more refreshing (like a Gravel Road Sticke Altbier or Ugly Pug Schwarzbier!) at Rahr & Sons Brewery 701 Galveston Avenue, Fort Worth. “Run for the brew. Run for the fun. This is the ultimate training for an Oktoberfest run.”

Be a Big or a Small Loser: Improve Your BMI

ll good things, even a Rock-N-Roll Marathon or a Mud Run series, eventually come to an end. This

will be the last installment of Know Your Numbers!, and then in September expect to see something new. Quick!!! What are the numbers you need to know? They are blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and body mass index. Did you remember all of them? Yes? Go treat yourself to a healthy snack! No? Go read your back issues of On Your Left!

All kidding and Greek-yogurt and granola snacks aside, as I researched this month’s topic, body mass index (BMI), I discovered that according to the National Institutes of Health 97 million people in the United States are either overweight or obese. That is a hefty number! I was blown away when I typed the words, “How to lose weight” in Google and it came up with 221,000,000 hits. Out of curiosity, next I typed in “How to gain weight” and came up with (only) 20,300,000 hits. But get this; then I typed in “Diet” and Google hit me with 537,000,000 sources!

As you can imagine, being overweight or obese sets the wheels in motion for future diabetes, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, heart disease, gallstones, sleep apnea, and even certain cancers (according to the Center for Disease Control this includes endometrial, breast, and colon cancer). I mentioned in last month’s column that I thought diabe-tes was an epidemic, (24 million Americans); I think the real epidemic may instead be buried in our big guts. Imagine our country if everyone in the overweight or obese category weighed just a little less… it would be the opposite of a bad health epidemic. It would be a healthier nation!

Our body mass index is an estimate of body fat, based on height and weight. You can click here to calculate yours. A BMI of less than 18.5 is considered underweight. Normal weight BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. You are considered overweight if your BMI is 25 to 29.9 and obese if your BMI is 30 to 39.9. Harrowingly, there is a category of greater than 40 that is reserved for the extremely obese. There are

Calculate your BMI at WebMD.com and share your weight loss story with us on facebook.

separate adult and teen calculators. (If you use the WebMD link as a resource, it also tells you your healthy weight, your resting metabolic rate, your target daily calorie intake to maintain, lose, or gain weight, and your target heart rate.) As with any formula, there are limitations to the BMI calculator. The calculator may overestimate body fat in athletes and those with a really muscular build (think Arnold Schwarzenegger in his younger years). It also may underestimate body fat in older people and those who have lost a lot of muscle mass (think George Burns in his older years).

You can also measure your waist size to estimate your risk for health problems. Waist size is measured with a tape measure around your middle just above your hip-bones just as you breathe out. Ladies with a waist size greater than 35 inches and men with a waist size greater than 40 inches are considered at higher risk. Another way to estimate your body fat is to measure waist to height ratio to check your body type (apple versus pear). A ratio of less than 0.50 is consid-ered healthy.

If you are in the market for taking off a few pounds, just know that the medical professionals recommend setting obtainable goals. Would you believe that losing just 5-10% of your body weight will help you lower your risk for the diseases I mentioned earlier! It is reasonable and safe to lose one-half pound to one pound a week. On aver-age, that equates to intaking only 300-500 calories less per day. (About 3500 calories make up a pound.) When you lose weight at a slow rate, it is much easier to keep it off. Talk to the biggest losers, and they will tell you that although it was hard to take off the weight, it was harder still to maintain that lost weight.

As a doc, I am always thrilled when I am able to help

patients control their hypertension, diabetes, and choles-terol with medications, but I am most proud of those who take off weight in order to do it. I had a patient just last week who currently is six feet tall, 175 pounds with a BMI of 23.7. He used to weigh 275 pounds, had a BMI of 37.3, had pre-diabetes and hypertension. One hundred pounds lighter, he is now a normal, healthy weight with a normal blood sugar and blood pressure! When patients ask me how I stay so thin, I smile and remind them that there is no pill, no magic potion, and no hidden secret. I tell them I make wise choices of what passes over my lips, I am constantly moving, and I am outside running, walking, or biking most days of the week. I tell them that I am certainly not on a diet; I am on a lifestyle.

Please Note: The info in this article is not a substitute for medical advice from your own PCP; you should always discuss exercise plans with your own doc; Dr. Johnson and DFWRUNS are not liable for unintentional weight gain, rising BMIs, or for the bag of Doritos that snuck into your grocery cart.

n Saturday, October 13, 2012 Central Market Southlake along with the

Neuro Assistance Foundation will hold the 4th Annual Run, Walk & Roll 5K. DFWRUNS is proud to work with Central Market on yet another unique event promoting the active lifestyle with athletes of every flavor. Runners and walkers will choose either a 5K or 1 mile distance and in addition, participants can power their upper body in either the 1 mile distance or the 5K Handcycle race.

In the 25 years since its development, handcycling has continued to grow in popularity. It’s been part of the IPC cycling program since 1998, and the 2004 Paralympics included handcycling racing for the first time. Today, thousands of people, able-bodied and those with disabilities, have turned to handcycling as a means to improve their cardiovascular health, increase upper-body strength, compete, and ride with friends and family. It’s ideal for people who have no or limited use of their legs, people who have poor balance, or anyone that just wants to try a different sport.

This event will help raise money for people in the community living with spinal cord injuries and disabilities through Neuro Assistance Foundation. While DFWRUNS takes strides to promote healthy, active opportunities for everyone, the Neuro Assistance Foundation strives to ensure that every spinal cord injured or disabled person in the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area has the equipment necessary to be mobile and independent. Along with NAF and Central Market, we see an elite athlete inside every racer.

Racing is moving forward. So join us in helping others advance past the immobilizing costs of spinal cord injury by supportingCentral Market’s 4th Annual Run Walk & Roll this October!

Whether you’re in the market for a great USATF Certified 5K Course or for another way to contribute to your community, DFWRUNS and Central Market have something good in store this fall!

TRAINING HARD FOR HER NEXT DFWRUNS EVENTBy Abby Werner

k, I will not lie, I like sleeping in late A LOT and do not particularly enjoy waking up early and going running. I have been able to force my body a couple of times to get out of bed when my alarm

clock goes of at seven, but not with a smile on my face. But since it’s been so hot, I really have no choice. My dad and I will drive to a local track that is about a mile and half a way, it’s great because no one uses it during the summer.

Once I start running, it feels worth it to wake up early and I really get into it. My dad is my coach and I’m thankful he comes with me, because he pushes me past what I may think my limit is. I always run a few laps but I’ve also been working on my finish- making sure I give it all I have. My occasional “break” is walking a little bit and drinking water. In order to develop as a runner and to become a well rounded athlete I do a few sprints too, after all, practice means progress!

I end up doing a whole lot of sets of pretty much the same thing, but I truly enjoy it. I stop after about forty-five minutes to an hour, feeling tired (and sore), but like I’ve improved. By the time I get back in the car, water is my best friend!

I figured I should tell you all a little more about me. You know that I’m twelve, but I have a ten year old brother, my mom and my dad. Out of the four of us, I’m the only one who takes pleasure in running. They all are really supportive though, and always have been. For about three years, I was on a club swim team and loved being in the water, but I recently quit the team to focus on my greater love of running. Swimming was great for preparing me for running, since I now have a great set of lungs despite my very mild asthma. I love little kids and am a huge bookworm. Some people might consider me weird because for the most part I love school, where I play the flute. I have an amazing set of friends who I feel I can be totally honest with. I’m not really a girly-girl, but I definitely love shopping! So that’s pretty much a brief summary of me!
