QUT Motorsport encourages new students to get involved

ON TRACK newsletter Issue #2, July 2011

Kick starting the beginning of a new year was QUT’s very own Motorsport team, as they participated in both Orientation and Market week, welcoming new students to their first year of university. With Orientation and Market week being an opportunity for new students to explore QUT and what they have to offer in their years of study, QUT Motorsport aimed to wow the new group of engineer students with their accomplishments made in 2010.Displaying their 2010 car in front of building D, along with design posters, brochures and knowledgeable team members, students from the engineering faculty and all-round car enthusiasts found themselves unable to walk past the stall without stopping to take a look.Team members Jack Bellotti, Jay Sampson, Damian Rawle and

Kirsty Jarrett did a great job at drawing attention to the car, presenting the opportunities available to students through their involvement in such a project.“The team intrigued new students by telling them of the exciting events we get to participate in, while the older students were impressed with the chance to work with professionals in the motorsport industry,” Kirsty Jarrett said.On a same note, Market week allowed QUT Motorsport to present to students outside of engineering, with people from business, law and urban development interested in learning more.“As the day progressed we had post-graduate and foreign exchange students come by and comment on our designs and car,” Josh Boyle said.

By the end of the first two weeks, QUT Motorsport brochures and recruitment cards had all been given out, a good sign that interest in the team was very high.In saying this, QUT Motorsport has started out their year on a successful note with hopes that they can offer all they can to new members, in order to offer them the best experience throughout their university study.

QUT Motorsport Lends a Hand to the Community

For 2011 QUT Motorsport has been aiming to put back into the community all the support that has been shown for the team throughout the years. The team has currently participated in Clean Up Australia Day, where the team joined the Botanical Gardens cleanup site and managed to fill their rubbish bags to support sustainability and their ‘green’ attitude towards the environment. Alongside this, team members Joe Cotton and Joshua Boyle shaved their hair for Shave for a Cure, raising $538 for the Leukaemia Foundation and ended up with a great new haircut. Being awarded with a certificate of appreciation, QUT Motorsport is now focused on their next endeavour – Plant A Tree Day.

Sponsors continue to showtheir ongoing support

On April 20, QUT Motorsport was delighted to find that sponsor Laser Central extended the opportunity for our team members to tour their factory, in the hopes that the team would experience firsthand what Laser Central could offer students in their support. On Wednesday, a group of approximately 20 team members arrived at Laser Central’s workshop, eager to learn more about the company who has supported the team’s dreams for a number of years.Separating into two groups, they were lead by National Sales Manager, Michael Ballard and Business Development Manager, Sam Turner, as the groups were directed through the various machines and jobs undertaken at the factory.Offering his support was Directing Manager, Rob Newton,

who was eager to answer any and all questions that the students had (which were many) as both the QUT Motorsport team and Laser Central, conversed at the end of the event. The tour showed QUT Students that Laser Central not only provides the QUT Motorsport team with the resources they need to compete in Formula SAE, but it showed they support the students, long after graduation, often offering work experience and job opportunities.“Laser Central encourages and promotes the greater knowledge and understanding of modern manufacturing processes, as the QUT Motorsport team members get a firsthand look at Laser Centrals’ unique multi-axis laser processing facility,” Mr Ballard said.Financial Officer Kirsty Jarrett, said it was a great experience

that opened up the eyes of many team members.“It was great to see all the different kinds of laser cutting available and how it related back to our car. New team members were able to learn more about laser central and how they support us, while older team members enjoyed seeing possible career outcomes,” she said.Building upon a long relationship, the QUT Motorsport team enjoyed the evening and the opportunities presented to them and are looking forward to the ongoing relationship Laser Central offers.
