News from the Office...

Well the first edition of the GRNZ produced On Track magazine has come and gone. We have received a lot of really positive feedback from the readers and welcome any future comments and suggestions.

On the cover this month is Moana Blue, previously raced by the Lifestyle Syndicate, sailing off the coast of Hawaii. How’s that for a retirement!

Congratulations to the connections of White Air in taking out the Group 1 Buy, Sell & Exchange New Zealand Cup. That was an outstanding effort and a great training feat by J & D Fahey.

With Christmas fast approaching it’s really a case of business as usual with racing on most days over the holiday period. The office will only be closed on the statutory holidays, but key staff members will be available on their mobiles as usual.

RACING MANAGER’S REPORT

TAB domestic turnover for the season to date is 8.7% up on last year’s record. Off-course turnover and our greyhound turnover at this stage of the season is looking strong as well. Export turno-ver (Australian sales on our races) is slightly down on last year’s record but still strong.

I met a few of our Australian owners at the Cup meeting on Thursday night and they all reinforced that there is a very healthy interest in Australia in New Zealand greyhoundracing. To help foster this interest GRNZ have recentlyarranged with the National Greyhound form to have aregular “Kiwi News” page with reviews and previewsprovided by Peter Fenemor. Feedback has beenencouraging and hopefully it will lead to some more export turno-ver along with the increased exposure of our racing. On Saturday 17th November clubs and GRNZ Board members met up for an update on what the Association response to recent media criticism was going to be and discussed these mediaresponses and guidelines. It was an extremely positivemeeting and gave the club presidents and executive that attended an understanding of the issues the industry is facing and how they are being addressed. We are all aware of some of the ridiculous accusations and numbers being bandied about by a very small minority, some of which have been picked up by the press. While it is essential that the industry doesn’t ignore these accusations it is also import that responses are positive and coordinated. Please be reassured that the GRNZ and the clubs are all aware of these problems and they are being addressed.

November 2012Have A Yap

Hi All Graeme Calverley reporting,

What a wonderful night of racing was in store for the big crowd that attended the NZ Cup night at Addington during Cup week. The Club must be congratulated with the turnover on course around the $120,000 mark. The main attraction was the NZ Cup which was taken out by the Dave and Jean Fahey trained ‘White Air’ from the 8 trap, congratulations to the connections. The other big event on the night was the Galaxy Sprint over 295m. This event held a lot of significance for the winning owner/trainer Alison Lee and her partner Merv O’Brien as Alison not only bred and raced the winner ‘Clone Your Own’ (he was the baby of the field but had the quickest time over 295m) she raced the mother ‘Elie Saab’ who when in her prime was a reserve in the NZ Cup, so to win the Galaxy with one of her progeny was a tremendous thrill for her and Merv as they mostly race dogs that they breed themselves, a wonderful effort.

One thing I would like handlers to remember winners are grin-ners, so please when on the dais and in front of the cameras please show your enthusiasm and congratulate your fellow place getters, this is a good look to the public that you love your sport and respect your fellow racers.

I have only had positive feedback from Licensed Persons regard-ing the new magazine in the new format, if there is any improve-ments you think could help future editions please contact Stu Cashen or Marguerite Pienaar in the office.

Have A Yap’s final win in her 72 start 42 win career was inOctober’s Group 1 Waterloo Cup final fittingly at her favourite track, Manukau Stadium the scene of 38 of her 42 wins.

This Group 1 victory also put her career stake earnings over the magic $100,000 mark. To make the win even sweeter was the fact that despite a serious toe injury at the beginning of May, trainer Denis Schofield was able to get her back on track in August and in winning form in September.

By Collision out of Token Whiz, Have A Yap was whelped in January 2009 and is a litter mate of Grace Hill and a half-sister to 16 other individual New Zealand winners.

Trained throughout her New Zealand career by the Schofields at Huntly, Have A Yap has now retired from racing and returns to Australia to begin the next stage of her career, that of a mum.

Life After RacingHayleys Agent

Cortez (Hailey’s Agent) was bred and raced by Ben Craik. He had a fantastic racing career, earning over $88,000 in stakes over 89 starts. He now lives in Wellington with Sarah, Steve, Emily and their cat Lucy. Sarah sent us this update:

On Saturday 28th January 2012, Cortez (Hailey’s Agent) joined our family. As soon as GAP staff let us know that we were approved to adopt Cortez, things changed and all for the better.

He is the friendliest, sookiest and sometimes, the laziest dog we could have wished for. We then also realised that he was an amazing racer and won heaps of money - you would never believe it if you saw him now!

He has settled into life with us really well. He just loves our 5½ year-old daughter Emily. Every morning, after she wakes up, he trots into her room to give her a great big kiss! His favourite time of the day is just after 3pm as that is when Emily gets home from school. We have a cat called Lucy – Cortez and her have an interesting relationship, he loves to chase her in play but also knows she is the boss!

Cortez has become very popular around our neighbourhood. When we are out walking people love coming up to him and giving him a pat. He loves his walks, and especially rides in the car! Emily is planning to take him to school one day for ‘show and tell’.

He loves going to the GAP runs; we go to Mana and Otaki. It’s so great to see retired racers stretch their legs and run together. It is also great for us to meet up with other retired greyhound owners, many of whom have become friends.

cal Insemination (AI) is used rather than TCI (Trans Cervical Insemination).
