The Soul has helped boost Kia sales by 18 percent for the first half of the year.

Kia is on a roll with strong sales, but itaims to stick with its vaunted 10-year

warranty. The automaker’s executivesstood by the 100,000-milepowertrain policy.

“We continue to get thecross-shopping set,” saidTom Loveless, Kia’s U.S.sales chief. “Customers whoare continuing to purchaseother brands who are com-ing to Kia expressly for (thewarranty) . . . actually makethe decision to purchase because of thewarranty coverage. I see no reason tochange. It’s part of the Kia recipe.”

Sales are churning right along, up 18percent through the first half of the year.

Does Kia need the warranty? Thebrand ranks below average in J.D.

Power’s three-year VehicleDependability Study, butConsumer Reports saysfour out of the automaker’ssix ranked vehicles haveaverage or better reliability.

“We’re growing in themeat-and-potato segments,”Loveless said. He expectsthe boxy Soul to find more

than 100,000 buyers for the second yearin a row as the brand builds on its 22ndconsecutive monthly sales record.

DETROIT — Ford is re-calling nearly 485,000 Es-cape SUVs to fix stickinggas pedals that can causecrashes.

The worldwide recallaffects the 2001 through2004 model years that arepowered by 3-liter V-6 en-gines with cruise control. It comes just over a week

after U.S. safety regula-tors began investigatingthe small SUVs, which arecalled Mavericks inEurope.

The U.S. NationalHighway Traffic SafetyAdministration has re-ceived 68 complaintsabout the problem, includ-ing 13 crashes, nine inju-ries and one death. A teen-age girl died when an Es-capecrashed inArizona in

January.It’s the third recall in

two weeks for the Escape, which was the top-sellingSUV in the U.S. lastmonth. A week ago Fordrecalled 11,500 of the all-new 2013 models with 1.6-liter engines because thefuel lines can crack andleak gasoline, causingfires. A few days beforethat, it recalled 10,0002013 Escapes to fix carpet

padding that could inter-fere with braking.

On the older Escapes, the cruise control cablescan snag on the plasticcover atop the engine andcause the gas pedals tostick, Ford said. For theproblem to happen, thepedals must be pushed toor near the floor, and thecruise control cablesmust have been bent ormoved from their posi-

tion, Ford spokeswomanMarcey Zwiebel said. Ca-ble positions can bechanged when the SUVsare serviced, she said.

“This is not a situationwhere the engine wouldaccelerate or go into awide-open state on itsown,” she said.

Dealers will replacethe fasteners on the en-gine cover, raising it sothere’s plenty of room for

the cruise control cable. In the meantime, Escapeowners can take their ve-hicles to dealers, who willdisconnect the cruise con-trol and eliminate the riskof theproblemhappening,Zwiebel said.

The recall affects421,000 Escapes in theU.S. The rest are in Cana-da, Mexico, Europe, Asiaand some smaller mar-kets.

■ 3.6-liter V-6; six-speed automatic; available backseat TV; avail-able MP3-ready hard drive. For 2012, the SEL trim level gainsrain-sensing windshield wipers and push-button start, while theSEL Premium now includes a blind-spot warning system.

■ City: 17 mpg; Highway: 25 mpg

■ The Routan shares the same boxy shape as the Town & Countryand Grand Caravan, but its face wears Volkswagen’s sloping grilleand lower air dam. The headlights incorporate rounded sections forthe outboard bezels. Exterior features include: optional power slidingdoors; optional power liftgate; optional xenon high-intensity-dis-charge headlights; optional fog lights; optional roof rack.

■ The Routan’s dashboard carries two distinct layers separatedby metallic trim. Unlike the Town & Country and Grand Caravan, whose dashboards received substantial upgrades last year, theRoutan gained only a redesigned multifunction steering wheel.Interior features include: standard removable second-row cap-tain’s chairs that fold onto themselves but not flat into the floor;standard three-seat third row drops flat into the floor; optionalbackseat entertainment system with two flip-down screens.

■ A driver’s knee airbag and side-impact airbags for the front seatsjoined the Routan’s standard side curtain airbags last year. Includ-ing the required dual front airbags, the Routan has a total of sevenstandard airbags. Safety features include: standard antilock brakes;standard electronic stability system.

■ All rear seats fold flat; 3.5-liter V-6 engine; cloth or leatherupholstery; low step-in height. Four trim levels: S, SV, SL and LE.Satellite radio is now standard on SV and SL trims.

■ City: 19 mpg; Highway: 24 mpg

■ The Quest is distinguished by black pillars that combine with tint-ed rear and side windows to lend a floating-roof appearance. Promi-nent chrome grille strip, chrome door handles and a spoiler atop thesquared-off rear end. Standard 16-inch steel wheels; available 18-inch alloy rims; available power-sliding side doors; available moon-roof, xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights and power liftgate.

■ All five rear seats can be folded forward to form a flat cargofloor. Because the third row folds forward rather than back, there’sa deep well behind it that remains usable even when the seats areflat. In the SL and LE, the two third-row segments are spring-loaded to fold flat at the pull of a lever. Interior features include:standard cloth upholstery; available leather with heated frontseats, memory feature for driver’s seat, backup camera, iPodhookup and Bluetooth connectivity, navigation system, Bosestereo and backseat entertainment system.

■ Nissan has enhanced the standard tire pressure monitoring sys-tem with Easy Fill Tire Alert, which chirps the horn once the speci-fied pressure is reached so you know to remove the air hose. Frontseat-mounted side-impact airbags; front-seat active head restraints;side curtain airbags protect all three seat rows in the event of aside-impact collision or rollover; antilock brakes; electronic stabilitysystem; blind-spot warning system optional.

DEARBORN, Mich. —Plummeting sales inEurope — and no hope fora quick fix in the troubledregion — hurt Ford’s sec-ond-quarter profit andforced the company tolower its full-year earn-ings forecast.

Ford joined a string of

other multinational com-panies — including UPSand Xerox Corp. — in cut-ting its profit forecast forthe full year because ofweakness in the region. The company expects tolose more than $1 billionin Europe in 2012, doubleits estimate from the be-ginning of the year.

The results underscorethe importance of Europe

to Ford, where it faces aneconomy in crisis. Fordrelies on the region forabout 25 percent of itssales and revenues. Saleshave fallen to 20-yearlows as buyers shy awayfrom big purchases.

“This is a very serioussituation,” said Ford ChiefFinancial Officer BobShanks. “It’s going to takequite a long time for

Europe to work throughthese issues.”

The automaker still ex-pects a strong overall op-erating profit in 2012, butit will be lower than the$8.7 billion in 2011. Previ-ously, Ford had expectedto make about the sameamount as 2011.

Ford earned $1 billion,or 26 cents a share, in thequarter, down 57 percent

from $2.4 billion, or 59cents, a year earlier. With-out one-time items, in-cluding the sale of twoparts factories, it earned30 cents. That beat WallStreet’s forecast of 28cents.

Quarterly revenue fell6 percent to $33.3 billion.

Ford posted a $2 billionprofit in North America inthe second quarter thanks

to higher pricing andhighly anticipated newvehicles like the Ford Es-cape. That was up 5.3 per-cent from a year earlier.

But losses elsewhereswamped North Ameri-can gains. Ford lost$404 million in Europe, down from a profit of$176 million last year.Sales of cars and trucks inthe region fell 15 percent.

Also available are a turbocharged 2.0-literfour-cylinder making 272 hp and a 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 321 hp. The EPA has not yet ratedthose engines.

Cadillac’s ATS compact sport sedan, at left, will start at $33,990, including an $895 desti-

nation charge, when it goes on sale this summer.

For the few who need its capabili-ties, the Chevrolet Suburban hasfew peers. For many, the 2012

Chevrolet Suburban is yesterday’sdinosaur, but if you need an SUV of itsilk, it’s actually the efficient choice.

The Suburban comes in regular-duty1500 and heavy-duty 2500versions. For 2012, trailer-sway control is added.

The Suburban 1500packs a curb weight ofnearly 3 tons, for whichGM’s familiar 5.3-liter V-8is no match. The SUVpicks up speed at a leisure-ly pace, needing a good prod on the gasfor enough passing oomph. In city driv-ing, any call for immediate power is metwith initial hesitation.

Even as the V-8 roars to its highestrevs, the acceleration is modest. At leastit’s a consistent sensation, regardless ofload: Five adults and a few weekendbags invoked similar performance.

The drivetrain has a best-in-classEPA rating of 15/21 mpg city/highway

with rear- or four-wheel drive. Still, make sure you need the truck-basedChevy’s towing capacity.

Towing capability comes out to 8,100pounds in the Suburban 1500. The 2500

beats the group with 9,600pounds of capacity. Itreturns 12 mpg in com-bined city/highway ratings.

The SUV corners like itsnautical full-size SUVpeers. But in other situa-tions, the steering still dis-appoints. Ride comfort is

excellent in the 1500 LTZ.Remove the 50/50-split third-row

seats and fold down the second row, andmaximum cargo volume is a crossover-beating 137.4 cubic feet.

The Suburban, which seats seven tonine, is the best-selling full-size SUV. Acertain chunk of drivers still need V-8towing capacity with a minivan’s appetitefor people and cargo, and enough of themexist for the segment to stick around.

The ChevroletSuburban can

seat up tonine.

Ford expects its first plug-in hybrid to be able to go more than 20 mileson electric power alone. The automaker also projects the C-Max Ener-

gi, above, to deliver a total range of 550 miles. The Energi wagon is the plug-in gas/electric sibling of the C-Max Hybrid.

The Energi has a bigger battery pack than the C-Max Hybrid and uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor powered by a lithium-ionbattery pack to make a combined total of 188 horsepower.

According to Ford, the C-Max Energi should get the city/highway com-bined equivalent of 95 MPGe. The wagon can be fully charged overnight ona household 120-volt outlet.

The Energi will start at $33,745 when it goes on sale this fall.
