Ford, General Motorsand others now have “eco”versions of their compactcars: models that squeezeout higher gas mileageratings with special tires, aerodynamics and othertricks. Now Chrysler’s newDodge Dart compact willhave one, too.

At $20,090, including$795 shipping, the DodgeDart Aero model will beless than the 2013 ChevroletCruze Eco ($20,475) and the2013 Ford Focus SFE($20,185), but more than the2013 Mazda3 with Skyactiv($19,170).

Its fuel-saving featuresinclude lighter aluminumchassis components, grilleshutters that close at speed, underbody aerodynamicpanels and low-resistancetires.

The Aero is rated 28miles per gallon city, 41highway and 32 combinedwith the manual transmis-sion, 28/40/32 with auto-matic. However, it only willachieve these figures sip-ping premium gasoline, which may be a detractorfor many compact-carshoppers.

The Aero gets about thesame fuel economy with anautomatic as the Cruze Eco(26/39 mpg), Ford FocusSFE (28/40 mpg) andMaz-da3 Skyactiv (28/40 mpg). Italso will be about the sameas the Hyundai Elantra, which offers 29/40 on all itsmodels.

Prius now No. 2plug-in

The plug-in version ofthe Toyota Prius hybrid, which can go up to 11milesjust on electricity, is onlyon sale so far in 15 coastalstates — the rest don’t get ituntil next year — and al-ready it is humming along, with sales of 7,734 throughSeptember this year.

That puts it comfortablyin second place among carswith a plug, behind only theChevy Volt (16,348 throughnine months) and ahead of

the battery-only electricNissan Leaf (5,212).

The Prius Plug-in wenton sale last fall and lastspring was among the fast-est-selling cars in the U.S.In somemonths, it evenoutpaced the Volt.

CNG Civic’s$3,000 deal

As if paying $2 a gallonisn’t enough, Honda isthrowing in $3,000 worth offuel with its Civic NaturalGas sedans. Buyers get a$3,000 debit card good at

the Clean Energy chain of40 public fueling stations inSouthern California and 160nationwide.

Honda says natural gasprices vary at Clean Ener-gy stations but were equalto $2.19 per gallon of gaso-line in Anaheim, Calif., thisweek, less than half theprice of regular gas.

The giveaway will go along way toward closing theprice gap.

The CNG Civic starts at$26,305, or $5,650 morethan a comparable Civic EXgasoline model.

Toyota’s Prius Plug-in withVolt leases as low as $269 amonth for three years withroughly $2,800 down, and the2013 Volt now leases for $299a month.Toyota undercuts that

today with leases as low as$269 in some areas on the2012 Prius Plug-in for as muchas $3,599 at signing. But the Nissan Leaf still

offers the best deal for leas-ing with one starting at $199a month.

DETROIT—HondaMotor Co. isrecalling CR-V crossovers fromthe 2002 to 2006 model years be-cause an electrical switch in thedriver’s side door could melt andcause a fire.

Honda and the National High-way Traffic Safety Administrationannounced the recall Saturday.

The problem involves around268,000 vehicles. Honda said rainor other liquids could enterthrough a driver’s open windowand damage the master powerswitch on the door. If that happens, the switch could overheat andmelt, causing a fire.

NHTSA said owners shouldpark CR-Vs from those modelyears outside until the recall isperformed to avoid any propertydamage from a fire. A fire couldstart even when the ignition is offand the CR-V is parked.

But Honda said it isn’t neces-sary to park the vehicles outside. The switch can be seriously dam-aged only if someone spills liquidonto it or lets a large quantity ofrain water into the car through thedriver’s side window, Hondaspokesman EdMiller said.

Customers concerned that theirswitches may have been damagedthat way can ask a dealer to in-spect their cars. Most vehicles willonly need to have a cover plateinstalled inside the switch to pre-

vent any liquid from coming in,Miller said.

Honda said owners have report-ed four fires but no injuries orcrashes associated with the issue.

The company will begin con-tacting owners next month andwill repair the vehicles for free.

It was the third major recallthis week for the Japanese auto-maker, which usually sits near the

top in J.D. Power and Associates’annual rankings of vehicle quality.

Earlier this week, the companysaid it was recalling 820,000 Civiccompact and Pilot SUVs from the2002 through 2004 model yearsbecause the headlights can fail.CR-Vs were recalled earlier thisspring for that same issue.

Honda also said this week thatit’s recalling 600,000 Accord mid-

size cars because a faulty powersteering house can leak and causea fire. That recall affects Accordswith V6 engines from the 2003 to2007 model years.

NHTSA also announced earlierthis week that it’s investigatingcomplaints that Honda Odysseyminivans and Pilot SUVs can rollaway after drivers remove theignition key.

Toyota has been trying to fix itsreputation after a series of massiverecalls of 14 million vehicles over sev-eral years. Before that, Toyota had

boasted a reputation for pristine qual-ity, centered around its super-lean pro-duction methods that empowered work-ers to hone in on quality control. Toyotaexecutives have acknowledged theescalating recalls were partly causedby the company’s overly ambitiousgrowth goals.

Toyota is also suffering from a salesplunge in China where car buyers areshunning Japanese brands because of aterritorial dispute over islands claimedby Japan, China and Taiwan.

Automakers are starting to findways to bring satellite navigation totheir cheaper cars with integratedsystems that are much cheaperthan fancy in-dash models costingupward of $1,500.

The latest is General Motors’partnership on a smartphone appcalled BringGo for the ChevroletSpark, the company’s cheapest car, that went on sale in July starting at$12,995 with shipping.

The $50 app lets a buyer in-tegrate BringGo’s digital maps andturn-by-turn directions to the in-dash screen. “It gives our Sparkcustomers the safety and function-ality of a more expensive naviga-tion system,” said Sara LeBlanc,General Motors’ global infotain-ment manager.

Options from other automakers:» Turn-by-turn. Ford intro-

duced a smartphone app last monththat offers spoken turn-by-turndirections. TeleNav’s Scout appworks with Ford’s Sync AppLinksystem. It also warns about trafficjams and gives estimated traveltimes. It’s in addition to Sync Ser-vices that comes with Ford’s Syncsystem and also gives turn-by-turndirections. Neither, however, dis-plays a map on the car’s screen.

» Buy later. On its new CX-5crossover, Mazda doesn’t requirebuyers to take navigation at thetime of purchase. At any time theycan buy a $499 TomTom accessorymodule that installs behind a panelin the console and uses the dashscreen. “You pop it in and it lookslike you have an integrated naviga-

tion system in your dash,” spokes-man Eric Booth said.

GM’s decision to integrate theBringGo app not only solves theproblem of how to bring navigationto economy cars, but also offersbuyers a system that won’t get outof date. An app is easier to update

than hardware.BringGo has some advantages

over other smartphone-based navi-gation systems. It can store, orcache, maps so that it does notdraw heavily from users’ cellulardata plans, which would make itcostly to use, LeBlanc said.

“All of the maps we have areright on the smartphone, so you cannavigate to addresses and look uppoints of interest without eating upyour data plan,” she said.

GM also has a backup in itsSpark: The OnStar service offersaudible turn-by-turn directions.

COLOR DESIGNER FOR

EXTERIOR PAINTS

DETROIT— If you bought anew vehicle this year, chancesare high it was white or silver.

Twenty-two percent of carsand trucks built for the 2012model year have white paint, making it the most popularcolor worldwide. Silver is closebehind, at 20 percent, followedby black at 19 percent. Grayand red follow to round out thetop five.

White is the most popularcolor for the second year in arow after overtaking silver in2011. The annual rankings arecompiled by automotive paintsupplier PPG Industries Inc., aPittsburgh-based company thatprovides paints to General Mo-tors Co., Ford Motor Co., BMWAG and others.

The rankings are skewedsomewhat by the large numberof pickup trucks on the market.Trucks accounted for 55 per-cent of North American produc-tion in the first eight months of

this year, according to Ward’s,which compiles automotivedata. One in four pickups pro-duced is white because businessowners often use them as worktrucks and paint logos on them.By comparison, 19 percent ofmidsize cars made in NorthAmerica are white.

White, which was also pop-ular in the 1980s, is making acomeback as a modern, high-tech color thanks in part toApple Inc.’s all-white stores andglossy white gadgets, said JaneHarrington, PPG’s manager ofcolor styling for car companies.Manufacturers are also makingmore varieties of white, fromthe flat, bright white on manyvans to the pearly cream ofluxury SUVs.

Silver also rose in popularityas a high-tech color starting inthe 2000s. It remains popularbecause it highlights everyangle of a car, Harrington said.

“Silver looks great on anydesign,” Harrington said.

White and other “safe” col-ors — silver, gray and black—also got more popular duringthe economic downturn, asbuyers stopped leasing andbought vehicles they expectedto hold on to for much longer, said Michelle Killen, GM’s lead

color designer for exteriorpaints. They were leery of someof the more daring colors on themarket, like the magenta avail-able on the Ford Fiesta or thebright orange on the Scion iQ.

“Buyers want to purchase acolor they won’t grow tired ofover an extended period oftime,” Killen said.

Color preferences vary bygeography. You’ll find more redvehicles in North America.Black and gray overtake silverin popularity in Europe. Driversin Asia like tan and gold but notgreen. Only about 7 percent ofcars in every region are blue.

Harrington predicts custom-ers will see more browns andoranges over the next twoyears, especially on luxurycars. Brown—which remindspeople of leather or a rich cupof coffee — evokes luxuryaround the world. Earthy colorsalso appeal to drivers con-cerned about the environment.

As for the 2015 and 2016model years, PPG is showing 64future color options to automak-ers this week. Among those areAl Fresco, a silver metallic witha green tint; Glacier, an icy graywith a violet blue tone; andElixir, a metallic mixture ofsilver and magenta.

DETROIT—Chrysler says it’s recalling Ram1500 and Dodge Dakota trucks from the 2009-2010 model year because a lack of adhesive maycause the rear axle pinion nut to loosen.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Ad-ministration said Saturday that if that happens, the axle can lock up, and the vehicle could losecontrol and crash.

Government and company officials say therehave been 15 reports of rear axle failure, in-cluding four that resulted in a loss of vehiclecontrol. The driver crashed into a concretebarrier in one case.

The recall involves 44,300 vehicles manu-factured from July 1 to Nov. 30, 2009.

Chrysler will notify owners of the recallbeginning next month. Dealers will install aretainer to secure the pinion nut free of charge.
