The city bus ofthe future is here

As fuel prices rise and ambitious environmental goalsare being set all over the world, the world about us ischanging rapidly. This is forcing us to develop alternative

powertrains and opportunities for using alternative fuels.

Here at Volvo Bus, we are prioritising the developmentof fuel-efficient powertrains, which is resulting in someof the lowest fuel consumption on the market with ournew Euro 4/EEV powertrains. Now we are taking thenext major step towards drastically reducing fuel con-sumption by introducing a hybrid bus which we havedeveloped ourselves.

Our hybrid project has prioritised high reliability, maxi-mum fuel reduction in combination with good driveabi-

lity and comfort in town and intercity traffic. To be able to offer a competitive payback time for our customers, we have developed a collective hybrid solution for theentire Volvo group using standard components as a basis,

thereby ensuring high quality and volume benefits.

I am quite sure that with our new hybrid bus, we willradically change peoples views of city travel by busand meet the stringent requirements for environmentalemission reductions while maintaining good profitability. For the first time, there is now a commercially practica-

ble hybrid solution on the market; and with this, hybrid

technology will experience a real breakthrough.

Developing and industrialising new hybrid technologyrequires major investments. For us here at the Volvogroup, there has never been any doubt that this is theroute we should take. Together with our customers, wehold joint responsibility for ensuring that the transportsector contributes towards efficient, environmentallyfriendly solutions in order to create a sustainable society.

Our new hybrid bus is a major step forward.

130 kg. The smaller 4 cylinder, 5 litre, engine also helps with weight distri-

bution. The result is that the Volvo7700 Hybrid weighs no more than

the conventional Volvo 7700 model but the passenger capacity is actuallyincreased by up to 5 more passengers.

The engine is installed in the far-left rear corner, as in other Volvo 7700models, so the interior layout of theVolvo 7700 Hybrid guarantees a high

passenger through-flow.The location of the battery has allo-

wed a minor restyling of the front end of the bus, but otherwise the exterior is verysimilar to other Volvo 7700 models.

Easily incorporatedDiesel hybrids are easily incorporatedinto fleets that are already using diesel

buses. Maintenance is as straightforwardon the hybrid as on any other diesel

bus, allowing for some additional train-ing for maintenance personnel. Thehybrid high voltage battery is simpleand secure to handle. The purchase ofa Volvo 7700 Hybrid includes replace-

ment of the high voltage battery afterapproximately six years.Training also helps drivers to get

the best possible results from theVolvo 7700 Hybrid and this training isincluded in the contract for supply of

the vehicle.New driver aids have been inclu-

ded: for example, as the brakes areapplied the retardation energy is trans-mitted to charge the batteries up toa certain point. After that point, theenergy no longer charges the batteries,

being transformed into energy losseslike heat and friction. To avoid this,Volvo Bus has implemented a specialfeature: a warning click sound thatindicates to the driver when this pointhas been reached.

To say that fuel savings is a buzzwordin todays transport sector is perhaps

the understatement of the year, especi-ally as the oil prize has reached recordlevels during 2008.

Edward Jobson mentions the conceptof peak oil as something that couldfurther raise oil prizes. Peak oil is the

point in time where global petroleumextraction reaches its maximum rate, after which the rate starts to decline.

In order to get less dependent of petroleum it is essential to develop andoffers in new technologies and transportsolutions, he says. Volvo has offers inseveral different areas, such as alternativefuels, engine technology, BRT and vehic-

le management. But one of the mostexciting today is hybrid technology.

Growing interestThe interest and demand for hybrid

buses is already high on the worldmarket and will continue to rise, saysEdward Jobson. Environmental con-cerns about global warming and highlevels of CO 2 in the atmosphere putadditional focus on hybrid technologyas it not only lowers fuel consumption

by up to 30 per cent, but also consi-derably lowers exhaust emissions by asmuch as 50 per cent.

The European emissions standardEuro V, in effect from October 2009,

is only one of many regulatory require-ments put on diesel engines.Several proposed directives and legis-

lation will further emphasise the need forfurther improvements in technology, hesays. The European Commission has pro-

posed a new Renewable Energy Directivefor 2012, where the suggested target is

that 20 per cent of all energy productionin Europe will have renewable sources by

    the year 2020.

FOCUS ON ALTERNATIVEFUELSThe Volvo group studies andevaluates many fuels that havethe potential to power its pro-ducts. Biodiesel, synthetic dieseland biogas have already made abig market impact. Volvo is oneof the leading manufacturers ofbiogas buses in the world.

SELECTIVE CATALYTICREDUCTIONCatalytic exhaust gas after-treatment SCR combined with

advanced diesel engine techno-logy results in both considerablylowers emissions and lower fuelconsumption than was possiblewith conventional engines atEuro 3.

ENGINE TECHNOLOGYThe Volvo D7 is a modern 7-litre,6-cylinder common rail dieselengine with a turbocharger andintercooler. It produces 290 hpand is configured to meet theEuro III/Euro IV/Euro V emis-sions standards. This is one ofthe markets best engines froman environmental viewpoint.

    Edward Jobson, Environmental Manager.

A sky-high oil price. Environmental concerns. New regulatoryrequirements. The list of things impacting on the transport sectoras well as the automotive industry is constantly growing.

There is great demand for environmentally friendly solu-tions that also lower fuel consumption, says Edward Jobson,Environmental Manager at Volvo Buses. Hybrid technology is aperfect answer to this. Text Hkan Hellstrm Photo Volvo

North America is today well advanced with the use of hybrid bus technologydue to political initiatives. Montreal

was recently awarded Forbes recog-nition as one of the worlds top tencleanest cities. STM, Socit de trans-

port de Montral, was happy to share with us some of their every day expe-rience from the life of hybrid buses inMontreal.

A Hybrid pioneerI am very pleased to work for the cityof Montreal as well as for STM since

they do their share to protect the envi-

ronment. I also get a lot of positivecomments from my passengers. Theseare the words of Ronnie Gervais anexperienced driver, who is 47 yearsold, has 19 years behind the wheeland two months of driving the hybrid

buses. Enthusiastically he explainshow he likes the smooth way thesenew buses run. This is not just because

these buses are new: No, it is because they are different and much smoother

to drive it feels almost like ridinga luxury car with soft but powerfulacceleration from zero up to 30-40Km/h. When we ask Mr. Gervais if

he would prefer different routes or dif-ferent buses he does not hesitate fora second: I prefer to drive a hybrid.

Evaluating the hybrid experienceToday STM operates a fleet of about1600 buses from 7 different garagesin Montreal. They purchased eightlow floor hybrid buses from the VolvoBuses owned company Nova Bus inMarch 2008. These buses, Nova LFS(HEV), entered service on regular cityand suburban operations, on April 21st2008.

All the drivers at the LaSalle depothave been provided 3 hours of trainingof the hybrids because ant driver may

be scheduled to drive one.Ronnie Gervais has driven the

hybrids in dense city traffic as well ason suburban routes. He is also invol-

ved in tests where STM will performan extended comparison of the hybrids with regular buses results are duenext summer. This comparison, based

lessons from life in realHYBRID BUS TECHNOLOGY

STM in Canada is one of the first operators of hybrid buses fromNova Bus in real traffic and gaining vital experience. RonnieGervais is a bus driver with experience from driving these busesin regular traffic and Manuel Dubuc is the manager of the work-shop in Montreal that maintains the eight hybrid buses. on more than 50 measured indicators, will provide important evidence forSTM on how they will develop theirfleet for the future.

The key to our success is trainingThis is Manuel Dubucs rule of thumb.

He is the Manager at STMs LaSallegarage where all eight hybrids aremaintained. Mr. Dubuc, 39 years old,

with 13 years of garage experience,

continues, We gave twelve mechanicsspecial training, since we would have to

work with high voltage on these vehic-les. He is quick to add that all of his55 mechanics are able to work on thehybrids on the standard parts of these

buses. Before the training some mecha-

nics were concerned over the new technology including reliability, different weather conditions, complexity, electricmotors and possible fumes from the

batteries. Mr. Dubuc observes: Todaymy mechanics say that these buses are

very reliable and they are no longerconcerned about any issue at all.He adds that all concerns among

his employees regarding the batteriesand other issues related to the hybridsdisappeared, thanks to the training.

The implementation of this new technology has been much easier thanI expected He continues: We do nothave any new on-the-job routines due

to the hybrids. Neither is there anyextra work for me or the mechanicsat the garage, besides, he notes witha smile, attention from the media.Lessons learned so far are mainly rela-

ted to the training of the mechanics. These 12 mechanics trained gained anew status at the workshop and today

the rest of Mr. Dubucs 55 mechanicsare motivated to go through the same

training. He ends our conversationsaying: I am very glad to work with

these hybrid buses this will provide us with a better environment.

It certainly sounds like STM have

some good ideas on how to advanceMontreal further up that on Forbes listof the worlds top ten cleanest cities.

Greyhound in the US haspurchased buses from Volvo-owned Prevost for the first

time. Most of the order for50 Prevost X3-45 buses willbe used on Greyhounds newBoltBus express service.

Greyhound is the largest provider ofintercity bus transportation in NorthAmerica, serving more than 3,100destinations, with a fleet of 1,250

buses. In the order for 50 buses, 33 will be used in the BoltBus operationsand 17 in normal intercity traffic.

We are proud that the BoltBusfleet consists of Prevost X3-45 vehic-les, says David Leach, President andChief Executive Officer of Greyhound

Lines, Inc. The X3-45 is a terrifically well-designed coach with numerous fea- tures that will help us safely transportour passengers in comfort and style.

The new BoltBus coaches are equip-

ped with a Wi-Fi router, video entertain-ment systems, 110-volt power socketsand luxuriously comfortable seats withextra legroom. Boltbus travellers can enjoy

free access to Wi-Fi and power outlets forrecharging laptops and mobiles.

Greyhound launched BoltBus ser- vice in affiliation with Peter Pan BusLines on March 27, 2008. The BoltBus

mission consists of providing travellers with fast, frequent, and safe transpor- tation, including unmatched amenities, for the lowest fares.

    Greyhound orders 50 Prevost buses

Manager Manuel Dubuc says that all concerns about the hybrid buses disappeared.

Guadalajara is Mexicos second largestcity with slightly more than four millioninhabitants and the financial centre for

the countrys western region. As many

big cities, Guadalajara suffers fromincreasing road congestion, air pollution, and an obsolete transit system

But, as is the case with several cities,Guadalajara has chosen to invest in BusRapid Transit (BRT). The first bus cor-ridor will connect the northern part of the

city to the southern part and will be ser- ved by 41 articulated buses from VolvoBuses. The bus is an 18-meter articulatedVolvo 7300, built on the Volvo B12M

chassis. The buses will be manufactured atVolvo Buses plant outside Mexico City.

The system will be planned andcontrolled by the State transportationauthority, while private operators will

purchase, maintain and operate the buses. The choice for Volvo by the

operator was due to the products highquality and experience in the Mexicanmarket. A decisive factor was Volvosearly action in offering the articulated

bus with the Euro IV standard. With more efficient bus traffic and

new Euro IV buses, there will be astrong positive effect on the environme-nt. And when many inhabitants leave

their cars for the more efficient public transport, the effect is even stronger.

    15/24

The market potential for buscompanies in Sweden is huge.Less than 5 percent of travellerschoose to book a coach ticket. This is something that mana-ging director Stefan Carln

wants to change. Its a hard job,but someone has to do it

Stefan Carln is in fact managing direc- tor of two companies, Sfflebussen ABand Bus4you, with their head office in

    the old textile city Bors.

Deluxe travellingSfflebussen AB is an old bus com-

pany, founded in the city of Sfflemore than 50 years ago. In 2006 thecompany was sold to the Norwegiancompany Nettbuss.

Meanwhile in Bors the threeowners ot the company Resefixarnahad ambitions to build their own tra-

velling company. After much thought, they came up with the idea of intro-ducing a new way of coach travelling, akind of deluxe trips.

This became Bus4you. We started to operate between Stockholm andGothenburg in October 2007. Bus4you

focuses on comfort and design. Thecoaches have wireless Internet and allseats are equipped with power points,Stefan Carln says.

Resefixarna offered a part of the business to Nettbuss, which bought 49 percent, allowing the original owners toretain management control.

The managing director sees Bus4youas the spearhead of the two trans-

port companies, even if Sfflebussensexpress routes are very important.Together the companies have 24

coaches, the newest in the fleet ofcoaches being the Volvo 9700 operated by Sfflebussen and used for expressservices. Sfflebussen is the secondlargest express operator in Sweden, car-rying 500 000 passengers every year.

The 9700 is economical and verycompetitive when it comes to fuelconsumption. The repair costs are lowand its reliability is very important. You cant afford to have a lot of back-

up coaches today, Stefan Carln says.Sfflebussen AB and Bus4you have

50 employees, and about as many again part-timers. But Stefan Carln hopes to be able to employ more people.

Huge market potentialOur main competitor is of course

the train. The coach companies haveless than 5 percent of the market and

the train has about 20 percent. So wedo have a huge market potential. I

want to crush the myth that says thatcoaches are a kind of second-class tra-

velling, Stefan Carln says boldly.Stefan Carln thinks that theSwedish government totally neglects thecoach market. Today you get a discount

if you buy a car that runs on an alterna- tive fuel, and the government is also pro- posing to lower the traffic tax for those types of cars. But what do they do about the buses and coaches? Nothing, accor-ding to Stefan Carln and this makeshim very upset, to put it mildly.

The government pays millions forcars that not are any cleaner than ourcoaches. We make efforts to be eco-friendly, but we are not encouraged atall by the government to do this. Weare seen as dirty. There is no incen-

tive for us to use alternative fuels. Wedont get any subsidies.

The coach market in Sweden hasa 5-600 million SEK turnover and theoperation is very manpower deman-ding. And still the government doesnt

take any notice. Were are looked on as if we were

a coal power stationBut even without incentives

Bus4you and Sfflebussen are usingAdblue and they are training all theirdrivers in eco-driving. Stefan Carlnhas recently employed Ronald Mottenfrom Volvo Bus and one of his tasksat his new job is to lower the fuel con-sumption even further.

We want to show that we are animportant part of the public transportsector. We also save money for society.I only wish that the government would

    recognize us.

Its one of the top workshops for buses, coaches and trucks in Spain. Here younot only get the best mechanics toattend to your Volvo bus or coach,

the bus driver is also well attended to; while waiting for their bus to getready for the road again, they are offe-red breakfast or lunch in the cantinaand they can relax in a room designedespecially for them.

Essential reliabilityIts essential that our costumers canrely on the work we do on their buses. The maintenance work and the repairsare as important as the actual purchaseof the vehicle. The words come fromIvo Portillo the manager of the cen-

tre. For us, each costumer is equallyimportant, no matter big or small, busowner or truck owner.

As bus fleets are now optimizedfor size its expensive for a bus owner to have broken down vehicles. VolvoTruck Centre offers the immediate

repair needed, with the mechanic wor-king a three-shift pattern, from 6.30 in

the morning to 10.00 at night. We aim to help our costumers

when its best for them, Ivo Portillocontinues, So we attend the buses andcoaches when there is less demand foroperation.

Its hard to get the best bus- and truck mechanics, but here you find them. One reason for this is theextensive training programme; anotherreason is the good reputation ofVolvo, being a Volvo bus mechanicis worth a lot. At the training centreattached to the workshop the mecha-nics have the opportunity to learnabout each model and when a new

bus model is introduced, a chassis of the bus is placed in the education workshop. Training is also provided

on the bodywork and its systems, including air conditioning, audio- visual/radio equipment and the toiletcompartment.

A keystone is the maintenance of the buses, three times a year the buses comes to the centre for overhaul. This is a good way to keep the contact with the costumers. Some 40 per cent of the vehicles attended arebuses and coaches. Supervisor Edison Pilatua in the picture.

ITS4mobility is Volvo Buses advanced technological platform that supports the bus operators control of bus ope-rations and provides passengers withinformation at bus stops and on the

    buses.The system gives traffic control-

lers the ability to monitor all of the buses in real time, see where they are

and their progress in relation to the timetables. Traffic controllers can alsomaintain constant contact with thedrivers using text messages. Using thissystem, it is easier to maintain timeta-

bles and react rapidly to disruptions to bus traffic.

For passengers, ITS4mobility featu-res electronic boards at bus stops that

show when the next bus will depart, while on board, there are electronic boards and automatic loudspeakerannouncements of the next stop.

    A major advantage of ITS4mobility

is that the system can be used for all types of buses regardless of manufac- turer. In Goinia, Volvo Buses secured the order although none of the 1,400 buses is a Volvo bus.

This is clear evidence that todaysVolvo is no longer just a vehicle manu-facturer, but a supplier of transportsolutions, says Per Gabell, Head ofVolvo Buses in Latin America.

Telematics system for BrazilVolvo Buses has secured its largest order to date for theITS4mobility telematics system. The system is to be installed on1,400 buses in the city of Goinia in Brazil and will enhance theefficiency of bus operations.

Misjudged bends and sudden evasive manoeuvres cancause even an experienced driver to lose control. The innovative stability programs ESP and RSP from Knorr-Bre

defuse unstable situations automatically thanks to intelligent intervention within the truck and trailer braking

systems. Driving conditions can therefore be controlled much more safely.

One of the toughest sailingcompetitions in the worldstarts in early October. Thecrews of the seven boats takingpart in the Volvo Ocean Race

    will be sailing around the

world, and they have to beable to handle storms, freezingconditions and icebergs as wellas moments of feeling down.

The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the three biggest competitions in sai-ling, alongside the Olympics and theAmericas Cup. This competition will

be held every three years as of this year. This round-the-world sailing competi-

tion has been running since 1973, initi-ally under the name of the WhitbreadRound the World Race. Volvo tookover as the main sponsor in 2001.

Initially sailors competed in ordinaryfamily boats, but the boats used nowa-days are some of the most advanced, themost high-tech boats imaginable. This

boat class is called the Volvo Open 70and is 70 feet long. These are the fastestsingle-hull, ocean-going sailing boats, tra-

velling at top speeds of almost 40 knots.

The job of the boat designers has been to create fast, safe boats. Thecomfort of the crew is a secondaryconsideration, and that is why this

competition is an extremely toughchallenge. Crew members are forced

to live in cramped, uncomfortableconditions, drenched by water on deck. There are in fact times when theirclothes are never dry. The cold and themotion of the boat make it difficult

to get enough sleep, crew membershave to live on freeze-dried food - anddespite all this, they still have to sail asfast as they possibly can. The longeststage is more than 30 days long.

This years competition will be star- ting in Alicante, Spain on 4 October, finishing in St. Petersburg, Russia inJune 2009. There will be seven boatslining up at the start; Puma Ocean

Racing from the USA, Ericsson RacingTeam 1 & 2 from Sweden, GreenDragon from Ireland, Team Russiafrom Russia, and Telefonica Blue andBlack, two Spanish teams.

Ocean sailing is not normally asport for the public, but the Volvo

Ocean Race is an exception. Every boat carries on board cameras, radioequipment, computers and mobile

phones. You will be able to keep trackof most of the things happening on the

boats through your computer. All youhave to do is go to http://www.vol-

vooceanrace.org to experience all theexcitement of the Volvo Ocean Race.
