The Stories of Our LivesWe all love a good story, and the best ones come from the heart. The joys and heartaches of everyday life touch on universal themes that connect us and have found expression, and enormous popularity, in American country music.

In his new documentary series Country Music, Ken Burns digs deep into a truly American art form and reveals the story of our nation. “At the heart of every great country music song is a story,” says the Academy Award-nominated

filmmaker and longtime WGBH friend. “The common experiences and human emotions speak to each of us about love and loss, about hard times and the chance of redemption.”

Country Music connects the his-tory of the music genre to the history of America, looking at how artists—such as Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, June Carter and Charley Pride—and songwriting reflected periods of war, economic despondency and cultural

upheaval. The eight-part, 16-hour film uncovers the roots of the music—from ballads and minstrel music to hymns and the blues—and shows how its diverse origins came together over the course of the 20th century to embrace feelings and ideals that resonate with devoted fans across the country.

“Country music is forever revisiting its history, sharing and updating old classics and celebrating its roots, which are, in many ways, foundational to our country itself,” Burns says.

Also this month, discover another set of stories that highlight the diver-sity of our country. In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month (page 10), join us for the premiere of Voces, a new series from PBS’ signature arts and culture documentary showcase devoted to exploring the rich Latinx cultural experience, produced by Latin Public Broadcasting.

The Pushouts (page 18) chronicles Victor Rios, a former dropout turned teacher working to make a difference in the lives of students at Yo! Watts, a youth center serving 16- to 24-year-olds who are out of school. With footage shot over the course of 25 years —including a year in the life of Rios as a teen gang member that was filmed for our 1994 WGBH Frontline documentary School Colors—The Pushouts trades narratives of tragedy and victimization for true stories of grit and resilience, highlighting the potential of young people to thrive when given access to meaningful opportunities and adults who care.

Stories inspire us and connect us. Set to music or told from different cultural perspectives, they make up the tapestry of our lives. Thank you for allowing us to tell the stories that make public media matter to you.

Bringing You the WorldWorld Channel tells stories that humanize complex issues. World shares the best of public media in news, documentaries and fact-based informational programming that help us understand conflicts, movements and cultures

that may be distinct from our own. World’s original content offers a national platform to filmmakers examining issues too often ignored by mainstream media. These emerging and master filmmakers spotlight a diversity of voices, telling stories not heard elsewhere. World has won a Peabody Award, an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award and numerous national honors—including an RTNDA Kaleidoscope Award, a Media for a Just Society Award, two Lesbian and Gay Journalist Awards, a Gracie and an Asian American Journalists Award. Carried by 159 partner stations in markets representing almost 66% of US TV house-holds, World can also be experienced via WorldChannel.org and social media platforms. The theme for September is National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Electoral KnowledgeA hotel housekeeper from the Dominican Republic, Carmen Castillo won a City Council seat in Providence, Rhode Island. While continuing to clean hotel rooms, she navigates a political establishment that does not easily acquiesce to the needs of working peo-ple. Despite a marriage that falls apart, Carmen continues to gain confidence in

her new political role, taking on issues of tax equity and fair wages. Although she has established herself as a strong voice for labor, she still faces a tough re-election campaign when her adversaries suggest a more traditional politi-cian would do a better job.America ReFramed/Councilwoman Tue, 9/3 at 8pm

Carnival ConundrumCarnivals are part of American tradition, but changing labor laws are threatening to force some owners out of business. The US Labor Department has issued new rules to raise wages and improve working conditions for carnival workers, 80 per-cent of whom are Mexican citizens with H-2B visas. What’s the balance between workers’ rights and the government’s responsibility to help small businesses? This documentary covers a six-year examination of the carnival industry’s labor struggles from the perspectives of a carnival owner, a labor recruiter and two workers from a small Mexican town.America ReFramed/Farewell Ferris WheelTue, 9/10 at 8pm

Back by Popular DemandIn the 1960s, a new generation of musicians from East Harlem, the South Bronx and parts of Brooklyn fused Afro-Cuban music with R&B, jazz, funk and rock to create Latin boogaloo. After decades of obscurity, the artists who made the music popular back then are

finally getting the recognition they deserve from younger audiences. Through original interviews, music recordings and rare archival footage and images, this documentary explores this fascinating—and often overlooked—bridge in Latin music history and its continued influence around the world today.America ReFramed/We Like It Like ThatTue, 9/17 at 8pm

Repression and Self-ExpressionAlthough much of Cuba’s art has focused on Fidel Castro’s 1959 Revolution, many Cuban artists say that’s not the case anymore. Today it celebrates self-expression. This documen-tary attempts to build bridges between old Cuba and new Cuba and the rest of the world by compiling a unique collec-tion of voices that tells a more complete story of the island nation. Follow the lives of real people finding themselves during this time of transformation. Re-Evolution: The Cuban DreamFri, 9/27 at 9:30pm

Stronger TogetherOver the past three years, Wisconsin has seen rising sui-cide rates and gaps in its mental health care. This documentary describes the struggles of four young Wisconsinites as they navigate incarceration, assault, discrimination and bullying. But through stigma and pain, they get support from family and friends to build the inner strength they need to survive. In this half-hour film, they share their stories to let others know that healing is possible. Local, USA/Kids in Crisis—You’re Not AloneMon, 9/30 at 9pm

W hy is the cost of housing such a difficult problem to solve in Massachusetts?

WGBH News dug into the issue with “The Big Squeeze,” a six-part, month-long series on housing, density, home-sharing and more. Starting with a story that defined affordable housing, and ending with one that covered the demise of single occupancy housing in Dorchester, the series looked at this complex issue from a variety of perspectives.

Gabriel Emmanuel explored the rapid increase of housing costs in Allston, and Stephanie Leydon reported on Nesterly, an intergenerational home-shar-ing app. Other stories reported on what innovative student housing looks like in Spain and how rent control measures might be received in Massachusetts.

“The Big Squeeze” coincided with the release of The Greater Boston Housing Report Card, an annual update from The Boston Foundation. Isaiah Thompson covered the report, which found an increase in the percentage of income spent on rental housing, a persistence of racial segregation in Greater Boston housing and a rise in homelessness in the region.

Housing density emerged as a recurring theme in the series, with afford-able housing advocates calling for increased density to boost the overall pool of available units. Others focused on protecting the character of their commu-nities by limiting density through strict zoning laws. Saraya Wintersmith investigated the issue in Dorchester, and Craig LeMoult noticed a similar trend in Newton.

WGBH News Executive Producer Aaron Schachter, who oversaw the work on the series, reported on Hopkinton, which has added 1,400 units to its housing stock over the past five years, sending hundreds of children into an overburdened school system. “We find that a topical series such as ‘The Big

Squeeze’ is a valuable and immersive experience for our listeners,” Schachter said. “By tackling the issue of affordable housing from a variety of different angles, a series like this helps WGBH News listeners become better informed about issues critical to their communities.”

The series culminated in a Facebook Live discussion about housing at the WGBH Studio at the Boston Public Library hosted by Callie Crossley and featuring WGBH News reporters. A new series will air in September, with WGBH News and the New England Center for Investigative Reporting looking into the trend of student suicides on Massachusetts college campuses. Senior Investigations Reporter Jenifer McKim will examine what colleges are doing—and not doing—to prevent these tragedies.

And Another Season BeginsBy Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager

W riting this column for September is a bittersweet experience. On one hand, we are marking the end of the official summer season, but on the

other, we are beginning another exciting autumn filled with great concerts, which we are so happy to bring to our listeners.

Let’s start with Labor Day weekend, which this year happens about as early as it can. WCRB will fill the entire weekend—from Friday through Monday—with the best performances of the music our listeners love most.

It’s a final holiday weekend feast of great music that will accompany that last summer visit to the beach, the lake or wherever you happen to be. The music will also perfectly accompany the craziness that is moving day in Boston on Sept. 1!

It’s also a “music from home” weekend, with all of our on-air hosts bring-ing in some of the recordings that they love most at this transitional time of year. Be sure you spend all of your Labor Day weekend tuned to 99.5 or listen-ing online at ClassicalWCRB.org.

This month also marks the return of our Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcasts from Symphony Hall and WCRB In Concert. The full September schedule follows.

Enjoy the end of your summer, and be sure to tune in this fall to Boston’s only 24/7 classical music station, 99.5 WCRB.

What’s on WCAI Online: capeandislands.orgOn-air: 90.1 Martha’s Vineyard, 91.1 Nantucket, 94.3 Brewster, 89.7 HD3 Boston

W hat better way to start your day than with a bit of poetry? Poetry Sunday is back on WCAI, featuring local poets reading their

own works on Weekend Edition. If you don’t catch the verses at 8:35am, you can listen to the podcast or hear them online.

“Not only can we enjoy the usual joys of summer—beaches, sunsets, birdsong—but, thanks to Poetry Sunday, we can pause to hear some fine lines read by our area’s many talented poets,” said Lorna Blake, a Poetry Sunday advisory board member. Each week WCAI features work from a differ-ent local poet, selected by the advisory board.

The idea was born out of a conversation at one of WCAI’s local pub nights with Leo Thibault, a member of the Narrow Lands Poetry group. Thibault said he and other members were singing WCAI’s praises, but they agreed there was one important missing ingredient. “We think WCAI listeners are sophisti-cated enough to enjoy serious poetry,” he said. “There are so many poets on Cape Cod—published and unpublished—and their talents might surprise WCAI listeners.”

WCAI has featured poets as young as 7 years old reading their work, with writers covering myriad topics, from the closing of Teaticket Hardware to St. Francis and the birds. Poems must be less than two minutes long when

Sunday Weekend Edition host Liz Lerner said she is amazed at the talent and variety of the poems that air. “Thought-provoking, moving and funny —the poems each week on Poetry Sunday are varied and impressive. I truly

enjoy listening and learning about the poets and their backgrounds. It’s the highlight of my shift,” she said.

“Send us your most polished work—run your poem by a knowledgeable writer or workshop group for feedback before submitting,” said Barry Hellman, a member of the Poetry Sunday advisory board and founder, curator and host of the Cape Cod poetry group Poetry & Music.

Many of WCAI’s shows, including Creative Life, Local Food Report, Cape Cod Notebook, The Bird Report and Living Lab are also available as podcasts. They are available on Apple Podcasts or wherever you find your podcasts.
