This learning from home package has been provided to students to support remote learning. It is understood that not all children will complete all tasks. If your child is having difficulty with a task please move onto another activity, have a break or seek support from the teacher.
Cut up the pieces below into squares (don't cut along the diagonal lines!) Now try to put the 25 square pieces together without rotating any of them (so that in the finished jigsaw all the numbers are the right way up). Rule: two pieces may only go next to each other if the edges that touch contain fractions that are equivalent.

Week 5 Wednesday Mathematics: Volume and Capacity LI: We are learning to choose appropriate units of measurement for volume and capacity Volume measures the amount of space an object takes up. Capacity is how much a container can hold.
1. Record as many units of measurement for both volume and capacity that you can think of.
Volume measures the amount of space an object takes up. Objects are three-dimensional. We use the three dimensions to calculate volume. Volume can be measured in: cubic millimetres mm³ cubic centimetres cm³ cubic metres m³ cubic kilometres km³ The little ‘3’ refers to the three dimensions of the object we use to calculate the volume.
2. Record the unit of volume you would use for each of the objects below.
a. Shoe box _______________
b. Skip bin _______________
c. Pluto _______________
d. Tin of paint _______________
e. Garden shed _______________
Capacity is how much a container can hold. Capacity is closely related to volume. Once we can calculate the volume of 3D objects, we can also calculate the capacity, by converting the cubic units to capacity units. Capacity can be measured in: millilitres mL litres L kilolitres kL megalitres ML Some examples of these units of capacity can be seen below.
3. Using those images as a guide, can you locate 10 items around your house and state which unit of capacity you would use for measuring. Try to identify a variety of items that would fit at least 3 of the different units. You can record these below.
Week 5 Thursday Mathematics: Volume and CapacityLI: We are learning to measure the volumes of rectangular containers
The volume of a rectangular prism is equal to the number of unit cubes that make up the prism. Each unitcube has a volume of 1 cubic unit.Find the volume of the prism. 1 unit cube = 1 cubic centimetre
Step 1 Count the number of unit cubes in the bottom layer of the prism. There are 4 unit cubes that make up the length of the first layer. There are 2 unit cubes that make up the width of the first layer. There is 1 unit cube that makes up the height of the first layer. So there are 8 unit cubes that make up the bottom layer of the prism.
Step 2 Count the number of layers of cubes that make up the prism. The prism is made up of 3 layers of unit cubes.
Step 3 Find the total number of cubes that fill the prism.Multiply the number of layers by the number of cubes in each layer.
3 x 8 unit cubesEach unit cube has a volume of 1 cubic centimetre. So, the volume of the prism is 24 cubic centimetres.
1. For each of the prisms below, record how many centicubes are in one layer and how many layersthere are of cubes. Then record the volume of that prism.
2. Using the formula l × w × h = v, calculate the volume of these boxes and record the dimensions.
3. Open-ended problem: How many different sized rectangular prisms could you make that have avolume of 48 cm³? What are their dimensions? If you have blocks or lego at home, you could try modelling this.
OPTIONAL NRICH Challenge problem: This cube is made up from 3×3×3 little cubes whose faces areeither all red or all yellow. The views from all sides of the cube look like this and the little cube in the centre is red.How many little red cubes are used in total? How many little yellow cubes are used?
