Sequence tables l ist the operations to be performed during a procedure. Eachoperation is described completel y in the sheet referenced by its number i n thesequence table.

The sheets are not always presented in the execution order. Refer to the sequencetabl es to determine the order execution for the sheets.

Each time an operation is performed, the operator should notethe resul t in the OKor NOK column.

if the result is OK,thenextoperationisdescribedin thefollowinglineofthetable

if theresult is NOK,theprocedurecannotbecontinued.Thenextoperationcouldbei ndicatedinthel ast columnof thecurrent li neand is either af allback or atroubleshooting step. I n case of a fall back, the fall back procedure shoul d be

started at the specif ied step.

A sheet may need to beexecuted at dif ferent stages of theprocedure andin dif ferentcontexts. I n that case, a set of input parameters for the sheet indicates the context.

1.2 Centralized Installation and Upgrade Services

The Base Station System (BSS) software provides Centralized Installation andUpgrade Servi ces (CI US) that facil itateand automatemuch of theprocessto installor upgrade software on a regular OMC --R workstation. (The Centrali zedI nstall ation and Upgrade Services do not run on an SDO or PCUOA M .)

A n OMC--R workstation cannot run CIUS functions and OMC--R clientappli cations at the same time. T he system provides a means to toggle between theCI US functions and cli ent applications.

The CIUS package includes the following components:

Centrali zed Graphical User I nterface (GUI ) Sequencer

    J umpstart service

    Fl ash A rchive

    L ive Upgrade service

Note: TheJ umpstart, Fl ash A rchive, and L iveUpgradecomponentsare all basedon Sun technologies.

    1.2.1 Centralized GUI Sequencer

The Centralized GUI sequencer automatically runs installation and upgrade

scenari os for a regular OM C--R worstation. T he sequencer also captures essentialdata for these scenarios. For more information, see I nstal li ng OM C--R softwareor Upgrading OMC--R software.

    1.2.2 J umpstart service

The J umpstart component supports remote and automatic installation of operatingsystem, third--party, andOM C--R software. I t reduces the timeneeded for upgradesandinstallationandreduces manual processerrors. TheJ umpstart tool alsoprovidesan automated environment for testing and regressi on testing.

The J umpstart service supports and works with Flash Archives and Li veUpgrade.

    1.2.3 Flash Archive

The CIUS functions provide a Flash Archive for each of the following:

    the OMC --R workstation (U5 or SB150)

    a Sun Solaris 8, SFV 880 server

A Fl ash A rchive is a snapshot of all software and fi les, including the operatingsystem, software patches, and appl ications, on a system. A Flash A rchive, createdafter software has been installed on amaster systembut beforethat systemhas goneinto production, can dramatical ly increase the speed of i nstal lation.

    Preliminary 15.03/EN March 2004 Copyright E 1999--2004 Nortel Networks

The Flash Archives work in conjuction with the J umpstart component.

Because a Fl ash A rchive does not refl ect fi nal partitioning, it supports any modelof ULTRA 5 (4 GB, 8 GB, or 20 GB) or SunBlade 150 (40+GB). A Flash A rchivefor an OMC--R workstation is also useful for an SDO or PCUOA M. For SDO andPCU OA M systems, DS--OA M tool s are avail able to install software that may bemissi ng from the Fl ash A rchive.

    ATTENTION

Fl ash A rchives only support systems with a Sol aris 8, SFV 880 server.

    1.2.4 Live Upgradeservice

TheL iveUpgradeserviceprovidesadditional enhancementstotheinstallationandupgrade process. L i ve Upgrade uses a boot environment (a set of fi le systems andassociated mount poi nts) on one or more di sks. A boot environment provides morefl exibi li ty than a si ngle boot disk. The L ive Upgrade service provides a commandl ine interf ace to create, populate, manipulate, and activate boot environments.

The Li ve Upgrade service works in conjuction with the J umpstart component.

    ATTENTION

The Li ve Update component is only available for a Solaris 8, SFV880 server.

    Procedure 1--1Installing OMC--R Software

To install software on an OMC--R server:

    1. Use the dedicated CD--ROM and GigaTape for the system to begin theinstallation.

    2. Use the GUI sequencer to obtain the essential data for the installation.

    3. Run a remote pre--i nstal lation check on each component of the OM C--R .ATTENTION

Defecti ve components may cause the instal lation to fail.

    4. Prepare the install ation sequence.

    5. Pl ay i nstal lation sequence.

    6. Run the CI US functions to install the OMC --R software.

    7. Toggle the OMC --R workstation to disable CI US f unctions and enable theOM C--R cli ent applications.

    Procedure 1--2

    Upgrading OMC--R Software

To upgrade the software on an OMC--R server:

    1. Toggl e the OMC--R workstation to disabl e the client appl ications and enableCI US functi ons.

    2. Usethededicated CD --ROM and Gi gaTapef or thesystemto begin theupgrade.

Note: TheGUI sequencer automatically obtainstheessential dataf or theupgrade.

    3. Run a remote pre--install ation check on each component of the OMC--R.

    ATTENTION

Defective components may cause the upgrade to fail.

    4. Prepare the upgrade sequence.

    5. Pl ay upgrade sequence.

    6. Run the CI US functions to upgrade the OMC --R software.

    7. Toggle the OMC --R workstation to disable CI US f unctions and enable theOMC--R cli ent applications.

    1.3 OMC-R start-up, shutdown, and switchover

These procedures allow the operator to start-up and shutdown an OMC-R and toswi tchover to the backup server if necessary.

I n the procedure description tables, the screens corresponding to M M Icommunications can be referred to i n NT Ps to . The screensspecifi c to start-up, shutdown, and switchover are shown at the end of thisparagraph.

The Timeserver feature is only supported on DBT GSM--R network. Within DBTnetwork, only an OMC --R Workstation and not an OMC--R server, SDO server, ora PCU server from the OMC network.

I f transfers between workstations are l onger than normal, contact the next levelof support.

    1.3.1 Operating rules

These procedures are for the OMC-R administrator with access rights to OMC-Rshutdown command classes and in possession of the UN I X super-user (root)password.

During the OMC-R shutdown, messages from the supervised BSSs are stored for

24 hours (Refer to NTP ).The workstations and servers can be shutdown in any order.

    1.3.2 OMC-R machine operating states

Four clearl y identif i ed operating states characterize each OMC-R machi ne,server(s) and workstations:

off when the machine is not powered

hal t when the machineis powered and controll ed by a monitor that is residentin PROM

UN I X when the operating system is l oaded and controls the machine

A M otif background screen is di splayed onworkstations running in the UN I X state.

appli cation running when the machine i s operating under nominal conditions

The start-up and shutdown procedures performed on different machines aredetermi ned by state transitions.

Figure 1 --1 i s the di agram of OMC-R machine state transi tions.

A procedure descri bes each state transition in the remainder of the Chapter.
