Her profes- sional career as an outstanding OPS educator and administrator spanned over 36 years. Effectively achieving a work/life balance, Helen and former hus- band, Pat, reared two children, Gerry Alan and Tracii Yvette. For many years, Helen was also a sur- rogate mother to “daughter” Tra- cii Lenee Hicks. Committed to serving her com- munity, Helen sat on several non-profit governing boards and volunteered time and service to the Salvation Army, St. Martin De Parres Center, National Council of Negro Women, NAACP, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, and Caring And Concerned Educators (CACE). Her volunteerism to the Urban League of Nebraska, specifically leadership in the Urban League Guild, was especially noteworthy and earned her Outstanding Lead- ership recognition and, in 1991, The Woman of the Year award. Post retirement from Omaha Public Schools in 1993, Helen be- came a small business owner and successfully managed Kids-Go- Round, a children’s consignment shop until 2006. She was a dedicated member of Clair Memorial United Methodist Church for over 40 years, serv- ing on several key administrative committees. Aug 5, 1951 - Mar 21, 2018 Loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend to many. Brian passed away suddenly on a ski-vacation with his family in Breckenridge CO. Brian was born in Little Rock, AR, To Harlan and Carol Johnston Speer, and grew up in Grand Island, NE. Through his school years he played many sports and excelled at golf. He graduated from Northwest High School in 1988. His business ca- reer started with Best Buy then worked in the Banking and Mort- gage Business. In 2015, he bought Eileens Colossal Cookies in Papil- lion, NE. In 2005, Brian married Allison M. Holt. He is the loving father of Anaka Speer, Bailey Bartunek, and Hudson Speer. Brian loved being with his family and friends. He enjoyed Nebraska and Denver Bronco Football, snow skiing, golf, and riding the dunes in Oklahoma on his Razor. He loved life, he will be missed. He was preceded in death by his mother, Carole Johnston Speer; grandmother, Vera Johnston; and father-in-law, Donald Holt. He is survived by his wife, Alli- son Speer; three children, Anaka Speer, Bailey Bartunek and Hud- son Speer; father, Harlan Speer; sister, Tiffany Speer; nephew, Colby Speer; grandfather, Bill Johnston; uncle and aunt, Rich and Deb Loewenstein and family; mother-in-law, Pat Holt; brothers- in-law, Andrew (Katie), Matthew (Kate); numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
