Intoduction• The Olympic Games are a major international event
featuring summer and winter sports, • Thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. • The Games are currently held every two years, with Summer
and Winter Olympic Games alternating, although they occur every four years within their respective seasonal games.
• Ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD.
• Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894.
• The IOC has since become the governing body of the Olympic Movement
History of Olympic• Founder of Olympic games :
Hercules (the roman Hercules) a son of Zeus.
• Name “Olympic” originate from :
word “Olympiad”
• First winner in Olympic games : (776 BC)
• Games which where held in initial period :
a) Race called stade (210 yards)
b) 400 meter 1500 meter race (728 BC)
c) Wrestling, boxing
• Participation in Olympic Games : (limited for Greeks only)
• 1916 (Not held because of world war-1)
• 1940 and 1944 (Not held because of world war-2)
Festivals and Rules• The ancient Olympics were held at
Olympia every 4 years to honor the Greek gods Zeus and Hera.
• There was a truce made saying that every city-state pay for a few athletes to go to Olympia.
• Only men could compete and they had to swear they had trained for 10 months.
• There were fewer events and only men who spoke Greek competed.
• A man who committed a crime or stolen from a temple was banned.
Training• An athlete started training from
early childhood.• The kids had 3 types of trainers,
who were called the Paidotribes, Gymnastes, and the Aleiptes.
• An athlete had to arrive in Elis one month before the games.
• Once there, they continued training in the arenas. Runners, pentathletes, wrestlers, boxers, and boys trained in separate arenas.
• If anyone cheated, they were fined by the judges.
Boxing and Chariot Racing• Boxing was a fight without rounds until one
man was knocked out or admitted he was beaten
• There were no rules against hitting an opponent while he was on the ground.
• The athletes didn’t fight with people the same weight; they were chosen randomly.
• Racing had both 2 and 4 horse racing.• The course was 12 laps around the stadium
track, which was 9 miles.• The owner of the horse won the wreath of
victory instead of the jockey.• Separate races were held with races with foals.
Pankration and Pentathlon• The Pankration was a combination of
boxing and wrestling.• Punches were allowed and so was kicking
an opponents belly.• Rules were no biting, cutting an
opponent’s eyes, nose, or mouth with their fingernails.
• There were separate divisions held for the men and the boys.
• The Pentathlon was a 5 combination of the discus, javelin ,jumping ,running,and wrestling.
Running and Wrestling• There were 4 types of running races.
• The Stadion was the oldest event where runners sprinted 192 meters.
• Other races doubled as 384 meters.
• Ranged from 1,344 to 4,608 meters.
• Another race, from 384 to 768 meters, was run in armor. The armor weighed between 50 and 60 pounds.
• In wrestling an athlete needed to throw an athlete to the ground by landing on a hip, shoulder, or back for a fair fall.
• Three throws were needed to win a match.
• Biting was not allowed, but an attack or breaking an opponents finger was permitted.
Winning Athletes• When an athlete won, he received an olive
wreath of victory.• When the athletes went home, their cities
greeted them with celebrations.• An athletes victory meant a god favored him
and was immortalized for accomplishments.
• When they went home, they received rewards. Some were permitted to fight beside the king, have their names put in public places, and given free meals at Pyratoneion for life.
• The family of the athlete had statues of the put in Olympia.
OLYMPIC RING• The rings were adopted in 1913.
• The five rings represent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
• Every national flag in the world includes at least one of the five colours, which are blue, yellow, black, green, and red.
•This is to remember the fire god Zeus in the Ancient Olympics.
•It is said that the god Prometheus stole the torch.
•It is the most venerable and evident symbol of the Olympic Games.
•This part of the ceremony was returned in 1928.
OLYMPIC TORCH
OLYMPIC MEDAL•The medals are awarded to the athletes or to the teams who come first, second and third, at each of the events.
•A gold-plated silver medal is awarded to the first athlete, commonly called ‘gold medal’. The second athletes are awarded a silver medal and the third places are given the brass medals.
•The silver of the medals is of at least 92.5% clear silver. The first medals are at least six grams gold plated.
• On the front face of the medals the ancient goddess Nike crowning the Olympians with the Olive wreath is represented.
• In the background there is the Acropolis
• On the back face the event is presented.
• All the participating athletes are awarded the commemorative certificate and a medal
OLYMPIC MOTTO
•The Olympic motto is the hendiatris Citius, Altius, Fortius, which is Latin for "Swifter, Higher, Stronger".
•The motto was proposed by Pierre de Coubertin
•The motto was introduced in 1924
•These three words encourage the athlete to give his or her best during competition
• Since the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, Olympic Mascots have become a main element of the Olympic image.

Weightlifting
• The apparent simplicity of lifting the barbell from the ground and over the head in one or two movements is deceiving.
Wrestling
• Wrestlers could use their legs for pushing, lifting and tripping, and they could hold opponents above or below waist.
Beach Volleyball
• Partners must be well matched or opponents will win easy points by exploiting the weaker player
Archery
• The term "Robin Hood" now refers to splitting the shaft of an arrow already in the target with another arrow.
Badminton
• The flight of the shuttlecock, a missile of cork and goose feather that players volley across the net, has been recorded at speeds of 260 kilometers per hour.
Basketball
• For 36 years after basketball entered the Olympic Games as a full medal sport for men, the question was not who would win, but who would finish second.
Fencing
Two rivals stand opposite each other and feint, lunge, parry and riposte until one scores the required number of hits to win.

• The first international multi-sport event for winter sports was the Nordic Games held in Sweden in 1901 organized by General Viktor Gustaf Balck who attempted to have winter sports, specifically figure skating, added to the Olympic programme.
In 1925 the IOC decided to create a separate Olympic Winter Games, and the 1924 Games in Chamonix was retroactively designated as the first Winter Olympics
The Winter Olympic Games are a winter multi-sport event held every four years, starting in 1924.Consisting of winter sports, the Games have included alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, Nordic combined, ski jumping, speed skating etc.
Alpine Skiing: Alpine ski ing (or downhil l skiing) is the sport of sliding down snow-covered hills on skis (One of a pair of long flat runners of plastic, metal, or wood that curve upward in front and may be attached to a boot for gliding or traveling over snow) with fixed-heel bindings.
Winter GamesFigure skating: Ice skating
consisting of one or more planned sequences of required and optional spins, jumps, and dancelike maneuvers
Cross-country skiing: or XC skiing is a winter sport in which participants propel themselves across snow-covered terrain over the countryside rather than on downhill runs using skis and poles. It is popular in countries with large snowfields
BIATHLON• The word biathlon comes from the Greek word meaning two
contests. At the Winter Olympics it means joining two sports together.
• Those two sports are cross country skiing and rifle shooting.
• The skiers have to go as fast as they can for a certain distance, then they have to shot at a target.
• Racers wear cross-country skis, ski suit, and boot.
• There are four different races for men and women
SNOW BOARDING• Snowboarding was invented in the
United States in the 1960's.
• It is a combination of skate boarding and skiing put together.
• Snowboarders do lots of tricks in the air.
• In snowboarding, talent isn't all that
matters.
FIGURE SKATING• Figure skating is a sport where you dance
on ice.
• Figure skating can be done in pairs or as a single .
• Figure Skating was added to the Olympic program of the 1908 Summer Game.
• Ice Skating is a very cool sport.
ICE HOCKEY• The first appearance of ice hockey in the
Olympics for men came during a summer Olympics in 1920.
• The men's tournament has 14 different teams
• Ice hockey is played on an oval ice rink.
• It is a very fast moving game with five people on the ice for each team and a goalie.
• The object is to hit the puck up the ice with a curved stick to the other end of the ice and get the puck in the other team's goal.
SHORT TRACK• Short track is a skating event that occurs on an oval track
that is 111 meters around (364 feet).
• There are individual events, relay events and events where many skaters skate at once.
• Skaters wear hard plastic helmets, special suits that are molded to their body, knee pads, shin pads, and gloves.
• There are four different events for men and women .
• Short track is fast and exciting!
