Mayan Interesting Fact

They invented a ball game that was a matter of life or death, literally. The rules were that the ball couldn't touch the ground and the players couldn't hit the ball with their hands and/or feet. The team that lost was killed and used as a sacrifice.

They created rubber balls that came in soccer and baseball size. You had to get the ball into a small gold ring.

Aztecs - Timeframe

1200 A.D. - 1521 A.D.Started as hunters and gathers.Legend – a wandering group of hunter-gathers, the Aztecs had a belief that one day they would receive a sign from the gods. They would

see an eagle perched on a great cactus with “his wings stretched toward the rays of the sun”. In its beak, the eagle would hold a long-snake. When they saw this eagle, the Aztecs would know they had found the place where they would build a great city.

In 1325 the Aztecs took refuge on an island in Lake Texcoco. There the priests saw the eagle just as the gods promised. So they built their city and called it Tenochtitlan.

the ruling of the city-states. • What he required was that each city-state paid him a tribute.

As long as the tribute was paid, the city-state remained somewhat independent of Aztec rule

Incas - Social SystemStrict social systems

Page 36: Olmecs, Mayans, Aztecs and Incas

Upper Class

• Men worked for the government and women had household duties

• Sons went to school• Upper-class families had many privileges, such as

private schools, stone houses, and the best clothes.

Lower class

• The lower class was made up of farmers, artisans, and servants. There were no slaves in the Inca society.

• They worked on government fames, served in the army, worked in mines, or built roads.

• Children learned to farm

Page 38: Olmecs, Mayans, Aztecs and Incas

Inca - Political System

• It was a monarchy ruled by a single leader called the Sapa Inca (He had several officers who helped to rule the empire...often relatives of the emperor)

• In order to run the government...they acquired taxes.

(There wasn't a lot of crime in the Inca Empire, mostly because the punishments were very harsh. For example, people were often executed for cursing the gods. If they were caught stealing, they would have their hands cut off.)

Page 39: Olmecs, Mayans, Aztecs and Incas
Page 40: Olmecs, Mayans, Aztecs and Incas
