The Presidential Lecture Series Continues – The Founding FathersBeginning in September and offered throughout the fall, OLLI at Aquinas is proud to host a Lecture Series on America’s first seven presidents – from Washington to Jackson. Gleaves Whitney, Director of the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies at GVSU, and a popular OLLI instructor, will present the first 4 talks on Thursdays in September and October on the following presidents:

George Washington – Sept. 20Our indispensable first president was the right man to estab-lish the office. We will explore why that was the case and also discuss the qualities that we want all of our presidents to have, but that few actually do.

John Adams – Sept. 27Come to class and learn why the HBO series about our second president became one of the most watched ever. Adams was arguably not only our nation’s greatest philosopher-president, but also a man of action as a key player at the 2nd Continen-tal Congress, in negotiation at Versailles and as a student and drafter of the constitution.

Thomas Jefferson – Oct. 11We will explore Jefferson’s complex public and personal lives, both as a world-renowned figure as the writer of the Declara-tion of Independence and the offices he held, as well as the mysteries that historians are trying to understand with regard to his personal life.

James Madison – Oct. 18 The Father of our Constitution, Madison was the first president to ask Congress for a declaration of war. We will examine how this scholarly, diminutive and timid man would find himself fighting the British in a second war for independence, as well as look at other ironies in his long, illustrious life.

Rebecca Knack received her undergraduate education at Southwestern University in English literature which led to her fascination with poetry. Becky earned her MA in Linguistics from the U of M. She taught English, Creative Writing and Theater for 21 years at East Grand Rapids High School.

If you have been yearning for a class that beckons you back to the beauty of poetry, then this class is for you! Becky will take you on a wonderful survey of poetry from Shakespearean sonnets to the poetry of today. Similar poems with themes on love, beauty, passing of time, and death will be compared and contrasted on structure and content. Unforgettable poems like Dylan Thomas’ “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” on death and Andrew Marvell’s “To His Coy Mistress” on the passing of time will be just a few of those presented. Donald Zinman is an assistant professor of political science at GVSU. His research centers upon the presidency, political parties and American political development. He has a Ph.D. in government from the University of Texas at Austin.

The final two months of a presidential campaign are

perhaps the most important. This course will cover the features of a presidential campaign in its closing weeks, including advertising, how late developments affect campaigns, strategy and tactics and the national televised debates between the candidates. Examples will draw upon not only this year’s presidential campaign, but also campaigns from the past.

Dr. Roger Durham is chair of the Political Science Department at Aquinas College. He teaches courses in international relations and comparative politics and coordinates the International Studies Degree. Dr. Durham has received the Outstanding Faculty Member from students numerous times and is an OLLI favorite.

This course will introduce students to the dynamics of global interaction and international relations, focusing on modes of conflict and cooperation. We will examine the interdependence of international actors and their efforts to organize, control and resolve conflicts. Topics including the causes of war and conflict in the post-cold war period, human rights, terrorism and counterterrorism since 9-11 and the role of the UN in international relations will be discussed. This is another of Dr. Durham’s great OLLI classes.

Dr. Shirley Kane Lewis was a professor at Aquinas College for over 20 years as well as the dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. She has received awards for teaching at WMU and Aquinas College, the Board of Trustee’s Award, and the Norbert J. Hruby Emeritus Award.

Father Henri Nouwen was a personal friend of Shirley Lewis. He shared his humor, his life, his keen intelligence and his “dark places” with Shirley during her sabbatical to Richmond Hill, Ontario. Father Nouwen was the L’Arche Daybreak Community’s spiritual leader for 10 years. Henri was complicated, multi-faceted and possessed a life spirit that connected him to thousands of people. Learn from this incredible man through the eyes of the instructor, and sample many of the 42 books he authored.

Dave Kampfschulte is the president of Amazing Circles Workshops. His interactive workshops have been popular throughout the state and country because of his energy, experiences, empathy, and humor. He has a M.A. in education and is a certified grief specialist. His book, Amazing Circles, has helped people to broaden and deepen their understanding of others and themselves.

If you have been searching for stimulating conversation and the chance to reflect on where andwhy you stand on the issues of today – stop your search now. This is the workshop for you! Ghana: A Course in Discovery

Scott Stabler is a professor of history at GVSU. Scott recently returned from a sabbatical in Ghana. For years, Scott has been a well-received professor at OLLI.

During this course, Scott will tell the story of the life he and his family lived while in Ghana, Africa. There will be tales of beauty, trial, and history. He will take you on a journey from the First World to the Third World and the lessons learned from how to survive without hot water to traveling in a country with few maps and bad roads, but dotted with pristine and untouched beaches. Learn how Ghanaians teach the Transatlantic Slave Trade in theirschools – quite different from how it is taught in the U.S. During the final class, we will enjoy traditional and delicious Ghanaian food such as ground nut soup and fried plantains.

The Myths of Mormonism

Charles Stoddard received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1969. He spent 14 years at Michigan National Bank, nine of those years as its president. Charles was CEO of Grand Bank beginning in 1987 until his retirement in 2002. He has been

an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Rapids.

There has been a heightened curiosity about the Mormon Church as a result of two Mormon presidential candidates and a popular Broadway musical. Along with the increased visibility of the Mormon Church, there is also an increase in misconceptions. From the perspective of a lifelong member, these myths about Mormonism will be discussed: 1) Mormons aren’t Christians; 2) Mormons are a cult; 3) Mormons don’t believe in the Bible; 4) Mormons worship Joseph Smith; 5) Mormons still practice polygamy; and 6) a Mormon U.S. president would report to the president of the Church.

Music of the Holocaust

Benita Wolters-Fredlund is assistant professor of music at Calvin College, where she teaches courses on world music, popular music, and American music. She has written about music of the Jewish left in North America, the Holocaust and Canadian musical nationalism. Benita is also a trained lyric soprano.

We will study a wide variety of music written, performed, and experienced both during and after the Holocaust. The first two classes will focus on music as it was experienced in Nazi ghettos and concentration camps during the war, where music served a variety of functions, sometimes positive and life-affirming, and other times negative and even torturous. The last class will consider musical works created by American Jews in response to the Holocaust.


Michigan & American Indians Today

Levi Rickert is a tribal citizen of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and is the former executive director of the North American Indian Center of Grand Rapids. He co-founded the Native News Network and serves as the editor-in-chief. 2011 found Levi traveling to some 25 American Indian reservations and his most recent

published essay, “Indian Pride,” can be found in Voice on the Water: Great Lakes Native America Now.

This two part class will introduce students to American Indians in modern society. Levi will highlight various misconceptions and correct the myths that many non-Indians have about American Indians. One example is that American Indians do not pay taxes. Did you know that there are 12 American Indian tribes in Michigan and that a large population lives away from tribal lands? This class will give a realistic glimpse into the lives of Michigan Indians today.

The History of the English Language

Award winning author, Gary Eberle, M.A., is a favorite professor of English on the Aquinas College campus. He has been selected as Outstanding Faculty Member, and received an award from the Aquinas faculty for outstanding scholarship. His most recent book is, Aquinas College: The First 125 Years.

English started as the language of a relatively small island in the Atlantic Ocean, but in the past one thousand six hundred years has become truly global. It is the official language of international air lines, and the parent of such “Englishes” as American, Anglo-Indian, Caribbean English, and Tok

Pisin used in Papua New Guinea. The story of English reveals that each sentence and each word is an archeological treasure waiting to be explored.

Dr. Daniel Miller, Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina is a professor of U.S. and Latin American History at Calvin College. He has published articles and books on the Mexican Revolution and Protestantism in Latin America.

Mexico is a nation of many layers and many paradoxes. It is one nation but has two historic roots – Hispanic-Catholic and Amerindian. Mexico is also poised between modernity, which is readily visible throughout the country, and tradition, which continues to influence thought and behavior at all levels of society. Mexicans are torn between a fierce loyalty to their country and profound cynicism about its institutions and leaders. Finally, Mexicans simultaneously admire and resent their rich and powerful neighbor to the north. Only by looking at Mexico’s past can we begin to unlock the mysteries of this complex and fascinating nation.

A 2003 ABC News poll found 70% of Americans believe JFK’s death was the result of a broader plot. Was there a second gunman? What about the trajectory of the bullets in relation to Lee Harvey Oswald’s perch? Was the CIA involved? Vice President Lyndon Johnson or the KGB? Professor Robertson has researched the subject since 1963 and will examine the evidence available, including film and

photographs. Review the evidence and ask, “What would be necessary to convict Oswald of capital murder?” Inquisitive students - this class is for you.


Women’s Sports: Hitting the Dirt in a Skirt & Other Horror Stories

Dr. Heather Kesselring-Quakenbush is the director of the sport management program at Aquinas College. She also teaches courses in sports management, health, and motor learning. Dr. KQ, as her students like to call her, received her Ph.D. at MSU.

In order to understand how women’s sports came into being, one must understand the role that women’s sporting attire played in women’s ability to

participate and the disadvantages that the clothing often created. This class will look at women’s sport and sporting attire from the 1850’s to the 1970’s and at the political and social issues that allowed for women’s sports to occur.

Dr. Robert Marko is a professor and chair of theology at Aquinas College. A U.S. Fulbright Scholar, he has been privileged to teach seminarians and lay students from Poland, Ukraine, Lebanon and Syria. He is particularly committed to the dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

St. Marks Episcopal Church, Cathedral of St. Andrew, and St. George Antiochan Orthodox Church have been a significant part of the landscape in this city of churches and all organized more than a hundred years ago. This tour will involve an appreciation of the present church buildings as well as commentary by Dr. Marko on the three paths followed – Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Protestant Episcopal.

American Religions: Past, Present, Future

Michael Dodge is an adjunct professor at Aquinas College where he teaches humanities. Michael earned his M.A. in divinity from the University of Chicago and his interests include religious and American history, as well as speculative fiction and

contemporary theater. OLLI students thoroughly enjoyed his last class, Overview of the World’s Religions.

Take this four-week odyssey through America’s rich history of religions, utilizing historical, topical, and group specific themes. Come prepared to discuss not only what’s in the history books, but also what’s in today’s newspapers, and what will be in the world of our grandchildren.


Witch Hunting in Europe

Dr. Charles Gunnoe serves as executive vice president, provost and dean of faculty and professor of history at Aquinas College. He studied Church History at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary before taking a Ph.D. in history at the University of Virginia. He is the author of Thomas Erastus and the Reformation of the Palatinate.

While most Americans are familiar with the infamous events at Salem in 1692 and 1693, witch hunting was a much more widespread phenomenon in central Europe. This course will investigate the origins of Western demonology and the initiation of witch hunting in the late middle ages. We will focus on the large central European trials of the early modern period. We will also review the critics of witch hunting and explore why witch hunting eventually ended.

Dr. Michel Pichot is an associate professor of French at Aquinas College. His area of specialization is history of French civilization. He has presented and published research on French social history of colonial Algeria.

Everything you’ve always wanted to know about France – the regions, the history, the politics, the culture and people - are all here in this four week journey. Dr. Michel Pichot will explore the historical roots of French behavior and institutions as only a true Frenchman can! Gleaves Whitney is director of GVSU’s Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies. He is a scholar who writes and lectures nationally on presidential history and leadership. His series on the modern day U.S. presidents was a highlight of OLLI ‘s 2011-12 year.

Gleaves will examine the backgrounds, character, and leadership qualities of our first four

presidents, as well as the policy issues of the times. He will shed light on the way each president impacted not only history, but also the formation of

Pearl Harbor - Looking Back

Earl Jenkins, a retired 1st class Sergeant, gave 26 years of military service to his country in the Marines and also the Michigan National Guard. He has been studying military history and collecting artifacts for over 50 years. He works for Calvary Church as their custodial supervisor.

Earl has studied the attack on Pearl Harbor for many years. He will address several issues: Why did the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor? Why was the U.S. so surprised and caught off guard by the attack? How did the U.S. adjust to the huge loss of its naval fleet? He will also recount stories told to him by his aunt who woke up that fateful Sunday morning and watched a war unfold before her eyes.

Paul LaPorte fell in love with writing as he earned his undergraduate degree in English Language from U of M. He has published Life in the North Lane a popular guide to living and working in Northern Michigan as well as The Heart of a Priest, the biography of Father Fred, which

received the Catholic Press Association book award in June 2012.

Join us for a lively and entertaining discussion of the life, the ministry, and the biography of Father Edwin Frederick. This fascinating discussion of an amazing priest will be led by Paul LaPorte. Father Fred served for 30 years as Catholic Chaplain at the Traverse City State Hospital until it closed in 1989. He started the Father Fred Foundation, now a multi-million dollar enterprise; it is the largest food pantry in northern Michigan. When he died, the local headline read: “The Faithful Father Fred: TC’s ‘Mother Teresa’ leaves lasting legacy.”

The 1950s: The Golden Age?

Dr. Albert Bell is professor of history at Hope College. His research interests focus on ancient Rome in the first century A.D. In addition to articles and stories, Dr. Bell has published historical mysteries for adults and children. His recent book, The Corpus Conundrum was published in 2011.

Dr. Bell will look critically at the 1950s, a decade now idealized as the Golden Age of everything from television to how children behaved to classic cars to America’s place in the world. We all liked Ike, but life wasn’t that simple in the ‘50s. The Russians threatened to rain nuclear missiles on us, if racial tensions didn’t tear us apart from the inside

first. Elvis scared parents in spite of Ed Sullivan’s assurance that he was “a fine boy.” The Middle East hovered on the brink of war over the Suez Canal and America supported a Cuban revolutionary named Castro. Ah, yes, those were the days.

Heart Transplants: Success Stories

Join us as we hear two heartwarming stories from two local heart transplant recipients. Listen to the story of Grand Rapids resident, Gary Snyder, who received a heart transplant at Stanford University 29 years ago and is one of the longest living heart transplant recipients in the nation. Joining Gary will be Tammi Jacobs, who will also discuss her story as a recipient of a new heart along with her interest in organ donation.

Join representatives from Family Futures whose mission is to shape a community that protects children from abuse and neglect; Guiding Light Mission which helps the homeless and disadvantaged of Grand Rapids; Kids Food Basket that packs and delivers over 4800 “sack suppers” per day in the Grand Rapids area; and the Children’s Reading Corner that provides reading opportunites to over 2000 children in Kent County.

Dr. Albert Lewis, former director of the Emeritus College, is a recognized author, speaker, rabbi, and specialist on aging. His weekly articles in The Grand Rapids Press are circulated throughout the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain. His latest book is titled Soul Sounds.

Rabbi Lewis will look at Psalms 23 and 121, highlighting theological insights and the practical applications of the verses. He will also explain the declarations of the writers in ways that will give great clarification and understanding. Rabbi Lewis continues to be one of our most popular instructors. Come join the discussion!


The Blue Nile Medic: A Real Adventure

Kate Dernocoeur has a special love for the natural world and remote settings, and has traveled to about 38 countries. Kate worked for 10 years as a paramedic, is a three-time graduate of wilderness courses with the National Outdoor Leadership School of Wyoming, and earned her MFA in creative writing from WMU.

In 1999, an international team of journalists, river guides, and medic ( Kate) was the first ever to successfully descend the Blue Nile River from its source at Lake Tana, Ethiopia, to the Sudan border. The trip was sponsored by the Explorations Committee for, and reported in, National Geographic. The 5-week expedition

trekked 37 miles of highland terrain next to the river, then rafted for 530 miles. Kate’s presentation highlights the risks and all the adventures.


Detroit Lions: Restoring the Roar

Brian VanOchten, a longtime sports columnist and reporter for The Grand Rapids Press and a regular voice on The Huge Show sports-talk radio program across the state, has earned a reputation for a tell-it-like-it-is journalist throughout his 24 year career. He has challenged readers to think about issues in sports that go far beyond the box score.

The Detroit Lions are on the move … again! How far will they go this year? Lions president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew, along with head coach Jim Schwartz, are working to “restore the roar” of this long-suffering franchise and its fans. Brian will explain how the Lions are putting the pieces together to have a successful season and hopefully go farther in the playoffs.

Logic, Geometry & Theology: Words Are Not Enough

Dr. Michael McDaniel is professor of mathematics at Aquinas College. In this class, the ever humorous Dr. McDaniel will show where the seemingly incompatible subjects of math and theology meet and overlap.

From the Road to Emmaus to the end of the Tractatus, people have run out of words when there was more to be discussed. Transcendent ideas attract thought and, hence our discussions. One topic is Gödel’s astounding Incompleteness Theorems where he showed that, restricted to logic and arithmetic, we

have statements which cannot be proved or disproved: words and math are not enough! No mathematical or philosophical expertise is required for this class because we will stay in the shallow end of the pool. Prepare to get your feet wet through excerpts from theologians, philosophers, and mathematicians. For those who enjoy cutting half-baked ideas to pieces, this course will supply the intellectual chainsaw.
