Peace are new band from a great city of musical

background, Birmingham. Having formed in just autumn

of last year from the ashes of previous incarnation

November And The Criminal, the quartet have already

supported the likes of The Vaccines, Tame Impala and

Magic Kids around the UK. The band consists of Harry

Koisser (Lead singer and guitar), Doug Castle (Guitar and

keyboard), Sam Koisser (Bass) and Dom Boyce (Drums).

Their sound, much like these bands they’ve opened for,

is alternative and guitar based: obvious points of refer-

ence are the jerky, stop-start math-rock of Foals and the

pop sensibilities of Mystery Jets, with lead singer Harry

Koisser’s vocals actually bearing much resemblance

to those of Yannis Philippakis’ or Blaine Harrison’s

(potentially a double-edged sword, at least before they

establish themselves).

Peace seems to take everything in they’re stride and

having just supported O.Children’s club night at The

Macbeth in London, they seemed to have settled

themselves in quite nicely within the music scene.

Although they’re still plenty of room for improvement and

for more songs, you can tell that they aim to please each

time they play. After meeting and watching the band play

at Birmingham’s Adam and Eve pub supporting another

up and coming band Troumaca, it’s very obvious to see

that Harry (lead singer) takes it very seriously, after all

he writes, sings and play’s guitar and probably at the

same time, whilst juggling a party life in Birmingham’s

Digbeth Scene.

Peace’s first demo Bblood was released only a few

weeks ago on their Facebook fan page, which has left

fans begging for downloadable material and even

merchandise. I suppose you could say Peace are

waiting for the right moment, and for now

concentrating on playing show’s around the U.K and

writing new material. They have very few songs, enough

to fill an EP which doesn’t sound amazing but great

songs can’t be rushed and each song is one that will

get you wanting more this band. As i said at the start

watch this space.

Peace’s next show will be at The Lock Tavern in London

on the 12th of June for Club The Mammoth’s Sunday

Session. See Facebook for more details

DJ PLAY ME A RECORD

As well as DJ’ing you produce your own stuff, how

long have you done this for and how did it start?

i’ve been producing since i was 16 years old, i used to

produce grime artists, as i had access to a studio at my

college but even though i enjoyed it i was never really my

thing. Now i’ve got my own gear, i concentrate on my

own productions and remixes.

You say you listen to other genre’s of music, what do

you mean by this?

I listen to music from all grenre’s including pop,

Hip-hop, Garage, Indie, hardcore. If you look in my Itunes

you’ll see that theres everything from pretentious minimal

to 90’s pop punk such as Blink-182 or moody hip hop

like Pharcyde. But being an ignorant child born in the

90’s my music knowledge before 1990 is

almost non-existent.

Who have been your favourite guess Dj’s at Face

so far?

This is a hard one, i would have to say Jamie jones

because he always smashes it and Edu Imbernon went

down so well, he became a resident at Face. And

another favourite Claude Von Stroke, his 11 o’clock

was the most energetic 11 o’clock set i’ve ever seen.

Where do you hope to be this time next year?

i’d like to have a vinyl release under my belt and the

opportunity to produce to some of my hero’s as appose

to just performing with them.

Birmingham is well known for producing some of

the hottest Dj's and The Rainbow Pub on Digbeth

is home to plenty of talent. Face has now been voted

number 1 of places to go on a night out, so i sat

down with Resident Dj Bunny myself to get an insight

on being a House Dj for one of the hottest clubs

in Birmingham.

Can you start by saying a little bit about yourself?

My name is Bunny, I’m a Dj/Producer and i’m the

youngest resident at the Birmingham based house

night called Face!

What’s your proudest moment as a DJ to date?

There’s being loads of highlights and i enjoy all of my

sets, my proudest moment was having my first warm up

gig at Face and having it turned into a 3 hour set which

then i was offered my resident place. But i’m sure Ibiza

will top that this summer!

You’re a resident at one of the UK’s most successful

clubnight’s, has being around other successful DJ’s

allowed you to improve?

i wouldn’t say i’ve been directly taught by anyone but

watching, imitating and developing their techniques, i’ve

defiantly learn a lot. I also try and listen to music outside

of dance genres as well as other dance genres to those

that i perform. I suppose this helps me keep an open

mind on music and helps me to experiment with music

i play on my sets.

Apart from Face, what’s your favourite clubnight

in the UK?

Trailer Trash, in London, because when i was an

underage teenager it’s where i had my first experience

with house and techno and all the people there are really

quirky and everyones out for a good time, just an

amazing night.

Breaking into the fashion industry is hard enough

as it is, but running your own online boutique and

selecting the best clothes for customers is even

trickier. Laurie Prescott owner of Bell and smokey

takes some time out to answer a few questions

and give advice on style tips for this season.

Can you tell us a bit more about Bell and Smokey,

where did it all start?

Before moving back to Birmingham a couple of years

ago, I worked in fashion in London and Paris. I was

happy to move back, but when I got here I missed being

able to buy interesting, high quality clothes, the only

choice was just the same as every other high street up

and down the country. It didn’t seem fair that people

outside of the capital couldn’t get access to lovely

clothes, so I decided to do something about it!

Where does your style inspiration come from,

and how would you describe it?

I’m definitely inspired by the European style of

dressing. For me, what you wear should be comfortable

and casual but still look chic and individual. Our blog

showcases our daily inspiration; it includes fashion but

also ranges from architecture to art. I’m also partial to

looks that have a bit of an edge; in my eyes music and

fashion are inextricably linked so the way I dress reflects

the music I love.

Who are favourite designers, style icons?

My favourite designers at the moment are Haider

Ackermann and Damir Dona; both are reinterpreting

classic shapes, proportions and tailoring. Personal style

icons: anyone with lots of hair, big eyebrows and wearing

lots of black.

What does working for Bell and Smokey Involve?

Day to day?

Each day is different; one day I might be researching

new designers, networking to find the latest talent and

organising photoshoots. The next day I’ll be doing the

accounts and chasing suppliers; it’s not all glamorous!

But every day I will be blogging and on twitter without

fail to make sure Bell & Smokey is in touch with our

customers and in touch with the industry.

WHO'S THAT GIRL?

Page 23: Olivie Mag

Do you have any style tips?

Never follow trends too dutifully. Be aware of looking like

you’ve just walked into Topshop and bought the entire

shop. Instead show a hint of the look ‘du jour’ but mix

it with your signature pieces so it is still personal to you.

How would you like Bell and Smokey to progress?

I would love the opportunity to invest in more young

designers that don’t have any other outlet to distribute

their clothes. I don’t envisage Bell & Smokey ever

getting too big; the whole ethos of our store is to only

stock a handful of each item to make sure our

collections maintain their individuality. If we are one

day considered to be a platform for unique, wearable

clothes and synonymous with individuality I’ll be happy.

What's the hottest item right now from your store?

Personally I really like The Battalion Black Hoodie with

shoulder pads. It’s made from organic cotton and really

luxurious to the touch but isn’t like your average fairtrade

jacket; it’s a real statement piece. It’s one of the items

that people always comment on!

As we are heading into summer what is your

must have?

Showing your midriff is back in vogue, so it has to be

crop tops. We have some lovely LaMixx crop tops in

store at the moment and if you’re brave enough to work

this trend, they are perfect! Wear them with something

loose fitting and flowing on your bottom half; maybe a

full length mesh skirt. I’m doing my stomach crunches in

preparation already.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

Ideally we’ll have expanded, and I’ll be able to take

holidays. An in-house design team and photographer

would be wonderful too!

One piece of advice you'd give as a part of your

fashion ethos? (meaning one of your rules of style,

e.g never wear flares with cowboy boots haha)

Never wear ugg boots.

NEW YORK 90'S

Page 25: Olivie Mag

Here's a sneak preview of what we will be focusing more

on in the next issue of Olive. Autumn/Winter 2012 is

taking the fashion world back to new york city 1990's

style but with a grunge glamour twist. Baggy jumpers

mixed with sheer maxi skirts and baggy band t shirts

and beanie hats for winter. Think of the hit t.v series

Friends the clothes are something to be inspired by.

Doc martens also making a come back but with more

grunge glamour vibe rather than the typical skinhead

style. We also see the tones and colours from Spring/

Summer 2012 turn to a more burnt contrast. The dusty

pastel pinks and blues, turn to to a darker shade, mixed

with plum tones. Taking inspiration from band Nirvana,

Kurt Cobain's effortless "i didn't even comb my hair this

morning" look, mixed with a polished face and baggy

clothes. I think with this trend you wouldn't even have

to buy new clothes, just take any shirts or t shirts your

boyfriend has!
