THE SENIOR OHANA Forty eight seniors watched attentively as Dustin Ebesu treated

Leonard Higa to massage therapy to ease pain in his back and legs.

The demonstration was performed at the conclusion of a very

informative presentation by Olivet member and Massage Therapist

Dustin Ebesu at the Senior Ohana meeting on May 15, 2014. A

licensed therapist since 1991, he studied and is experienced in

different styles of massage including Swedish, lomi lomi, shiatsu,

and deep tissue. He emphasized that good health is the result of

maintaining the combination of having enough sleep, eating a

nutritious balanced diet, doing exercises regularly, and handling

stress successfully.

Quoting from his handout—”Massage can be beneficial for many

conditions of muscle fatigue, pain, or stress. Massage can relieve

muscle fatigue and reduce build up of lactic acid. Pain is nature’s

message from your body to tell you that it is out of balance. Massage

can ease pain by elevating the body’s natural endorphins, and by

correcting muscle tightness. Massage can help to relieve stress by

increasing the body’s natural oxytocin levels, the feel good

chemicals in your nervous system.”

It was evident by the number of seniors who signed up for

an appointment with Dustin Ebesu, that the group benefited

from the information and demonstration he provided in his

enlightening presentation.

Once each year, Chef Mizushima prepares “lunch by Mizu”

and this year was no exception. Again and with great

anticipation, the group looked forward to eating a delicious

and bountiful meal. Lunch was terrific and together with

cordial company, the meeting ended beneficially for all the

seniors.

Join us at our next meeting on July 17 at 8:30am at Olivet

Baptist Church as we take a tour of Iolani Sportswear and

enjoy lunch at Side Street Inn. Cost: $20. Space is limited.

Dear Olivet Family and Friends:

What a blessing it is to be

located in a community of people

of every walk of life. I believe

that God placed this church here

for one primary purpose – to win

people to faith in Jesus Christ.

That is our main business. That

is the purpose for our being here.

Among the many groups that

come through our city are the

young people who attend our

university and colleges. When I

came to Olivet I wanted to find a

way to reach out to this group of

bright adults. As I thought about

this, the verses of Matthew 28.16

-20 began to stir my thoughts

and soul. “Go therefore and

make disciples of all nations…”

Then I thought, “Wait a minute,

we don’t have to go very far, it’s

here.” The people of the nations

are here. We can reach the

nations for Christ right here in

Hawaii.

Meredith Brunson, assistant

director for International Baptist

Ministries made this statement:

“The University of Hawaii at

Manoa has 1700 international

students from 80 different

countries. These students return

home to their countries as some

of the brightest, well-educated

leaders. Imagine the impact they

could have on the world if they

encounter Christ while they are

in the States.”

Many of these students have

never heard of Jesus. Their years

of schooling in Hawaii provide a

rare opportunity for Christians to

reach out to them and share the

love of Christ. Meredith says

that, “Sadly, 80% of

international students are never

B U I L D I N G FA I T H I N Y O U R C O M M U N I T Y

invited into an American home

while they are in the States.”

You know what? We can

change that. What a natural

thing for this church. We love

without expecting anything in

return – that’s part of our faith.

I would love to have our church

partner with International Baptist

Ministries and have a Host

Family program begin in August

2014. Hosting a student means

welcoming them into your

family, inviting them for dinner

or holidays, and being their

“home away from home” while

they are in Hawaii.

If you are interested in hosting

an international student, there

will be a brief orientation on July

27, after the 11:00 worship. We

will hold another orientation on

Wednesday, July 30, after the

6:30 pm prayer time. A signup

sheet will available at the

Welcome tent.

Please pray and consider

whether God is calling your

family to be a part of this

exciting mission and outreach

opportunity!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Tim

Minister of Outreach &

Education

Message for the

Month

Focus on Our Family

O ne of the biggest

challenges ministers

face is the balance of ministry

and family. On Wednesday

nights my family comes over

to join the church for dinner.

When it’s time for them to

leave I help load them in the

van. As I say goodbye to my

kids and wife so I can attend

our Bible studies, my girls of-

ten cry. “We want you to come

with us Daddy!”, so heart-

breaking. Occasionally this

happens on Sunday after

church too when I have to stick

around for things. Maybe the

Catholic tradition has it right;

ministers should be single with

no children. Maybe my kids

will just get used to it. Is that

what I want? Do I want them

to get “used to it”?

I think family is so important. You look

around at Olivet. Family is the glue

that keeps the church together. There is a

long heritage of families that can identify

multigenerational presence in this church.

It’s not only by blood we are related. As

brothers and sisters of our Lord Jesus

Christ, we are a family, a spiritual family.

We may not possess the same genes as

others in the church, but we are bonded by

blood in a different way, the blood of

Christ. When Jesus died for us his blood

covered our sin and left an open invitation

to join the family of God. When we re-

pent and put our faith in Jesus, we accept

that invitation into the family.

Family is so important and has always

been an important part of this church.

This is our strength, family. So do I want

my kids to get “used to” me being away

from them? No! They have developed an

understanding that I have to be away, but

it doesn’t mean they have to be used to it.

I want them to always know that family is

most important to me. I want your kids to

know that about you too and I want every-

one to know that about Olivet Baptist

Church!

To encourage a focus on families, we are

doing a couple things this month. The

first thing is having children in worship.

For the 11:00 service children ages six

and up will be attending services. We

hope that families will be there to worship

with their kids.

When there are kids worshipping with-

out their parents, we will have someone

staying with them. If you see kids in

worship without their family, I encour-

age you to sit with them, even if we

have someone looking after them.

Child care will still be available in the

Nursery (0-23 months) and Extended

Care (2-5).

The second initiative for families is

Family Fridays in July. Instead of VBS,

this year we would like to try something

that targets families. For the last three

Fridays in July (11th, 18th and 25th) we

will have an evening of family worship.

Check in will begin at 5pm followed by

a light dinner at 530pm. At 6pm we

will have a time of family musical wor-

ship, a short message/devotional, activ-

ity time and a late night movie. Our

theme will be “Mind, Body and Spirit”,

touching on each of these individual on

the three Fridays. Our late night movie

will include “God’s Not Dead” and

“Heaven is For Real”.

Family first. If we can develop health

spirituality in our families, it can be one

of the greatest witnesses for others. In-

dividual healthy families then develop a

healthy church family that will be a tes-

timony for the world. -jason

We have had an eventful summer so far as we continue on with our mission emphasis of ministering to the various communities that our youth are a part of! Our focus this summer has been to recognize the various places that our youth have influence over including their friends and family, church family, school, and community. Our Missions projects and events have all been geared toward ministry and service to each one of these groups. The month of June has been a busy and a fun filled one for the youth department! We had an overnight lock in where we played games, ate s’mores, watched movies and did everything but sleep! The next day, we had a time of prayer over the “Wash and Glow” car wash outreach that took place the following morning. I was proud to see how hard our youth worked to minister to our community during the outreach event! We have several events coming up in the month of July

including a game night and Kaka’ako homeless feeding!

I am excited to see the continual movement of the Holy Spirit

within the lives of our youth as we seek to grow in our love for

him and those around us!

OLIVET MINISTRY IN ACTION

A Journey Afar

This July I will have the opportunity to

do foreign mission work in East

Asia. Where specifically is confidential

for the safety of the missionaries that

we will be meeting with. This trip is

going to be an amazing opportunity to

learn about how foreign mission work

is done and what struggles believers in

foreign countries go through. My team

and I will be assisting some missionar-

ies stationed there in doing first works

that will help the missionary's ministry

flourish. Prayers for people we en-

counter to have open hearts, for divine

appointments, and for the safety of the

team would be greatly appreciated.

Why I Love Sunday School by Carol Hayashida

First of all my teacher, Millie Oyer, does a great job of teach-

ing the bible in a simple, applicable way. Our class is a

group of women who have become sisters in Christ and use

God's word to get through our daily crisis and life changes.

As we get to know one another we can open up with our

needs and concerns.

It's great to have a spiritual support group because we live

in a time of rapid changes when right can be wrong and

sometimes wrong can appear right. We need God's word

and each other to keep grounded and trust that His words

and timing is always right.

We have seen how our growth has created better lives and

are eager to meet other women who love The Lord.

Come join our class. ..Sorry guys, it's women only.

Olivet volunteers and youth department led “Wash &

Glow,” a free community car wash on Saturday June 14.

GOD MOVES PEOPLE On Sunday, following the car wash, a fellow who had

his car washed on Saturday, joined the Olivet family

for worship during our 11 a.m. service.

A woman who spoke with Dean Morihara at the car

wash said, "You all have an amazing church. This is

just what my son and I needed today...to be sur-

rounded by people."

Pastor Tim and Morris Kimoto met a gentlemen who

asked for prayer. They prayed with him as he was

going through some challenges in his life.

Everyone came needing to have their car washed,

and they all left with a clean car ... but what they will

remember is the love and joy of Christ that was

shared with them.

The mission of Olivet Preschool is to provide a nurturing Christ-Centered Weekday Preschool with a Bible-based early childhood program for the fami-lies of Olivet and the surrounding com-munity as an outreach weekday educa-tion and childcare ministry of Olivet Baptist Church.

Our Mission

"We will not hide them from

the children, telling to

the generation to come the

praises of the Lord, and

His Strength and His won-

derful works that He has

done"

Psalms 78:3-4

Olivet Baptist Preschool Our desire is to preach the good news of Christ to our students, our families & our communities.

Enriching Our Summer With Fun All throughout the year, we provide our students with various enrichment experiences.

The preschool ended the spring

session with a visit to the Lyon

Arboretum in Manoa valley.

Students got to see, feel, and

even taste a few different plants

and flowers (pictured to the left).

This summer session, we re-

cently went out on a glass bot-

tom boat in beautiful Kaneohe

Bay. We had over 60 students,

parents, and teachers participate

in the outing. Students had an

opportunity to view ocean life

through the glass bottom, and

even feed some of the fish

(bottom left and below).

Get A Head Start Program Olivet Baptist Preschool endeavors to have a comprehensive curriculum that is age-appropriate. Since preschool is one of the child's first group social experiences, working together and cooperation are major emphases. Units of study include topics such as: Learning about self, families, plants, animals, the ocean, the 5 senses, com-munication, transportation, commu-nity helpers, etc. Excursions are pro-vided that coordinate with the units of study.
