M ANTOINE OLIGER

He was born in 1716 and died 10/11/1799. Antoine was a shepherd in Haut-Clocher, Lorraine, France where he married Anne Marguerite Krüegenbauerr (Anne Marguerite Kruhenbauer ?) (1m). M1 MARIE-ANNE OLIGER b. in 1752 d. 12/8/1809 in Haut-Clocher, Lorraine, France She never married. M2 ANTOINE OLIGER b. 8/2/1759 and baptized the next day in Haut-Clocher, Lorraine, France d. 3/16/1845 in Bourdonnay, Lorraine, France m. M21 NICHOLAS OLIGER b. in 1794 in Bourdonnay, France He lived in Hesse, France in 1845. M22 JACQUES OLIGER (aka JACOB OLIGER) b. in 1789 in Bourdonnay, Lorraine, France d. 3/20/1868 near Owensville, OH in the United States m. (1st) Reine Mileur (3m), born in 1796 (probably in France) and died 3/7/1860 near Owensville, OH. She was buried in St. Philomena Catholic Church’s graveyard near Owensville, OH. m. (2nd) 6/22/1860 by Father L. Navarron (4m) to Josephine Paquotte (Josephine Parker ?) (5m), born in France in 1815. After his death, she married John LaBrune (6m) 5/17/1868. He was a shepherd in 1817 and then a farmer in 1840 and 1845 in Bourdonnay, France. His children were all born there. He and his first wife were buried in St. Philomena Catholic Church’s graveyard near Owensville, OH. This family arrived in New Orleans, LA on the Rockall from France 5/17/1848 and one month later, on 6/13/1848, he bought (with cash?) 165 acres and 15 poles of farm land for $4000 just north of present day Owensville (known then as New Boston) along Stonelick Creek. He made his own bricks for the buildings he constructed there, grew grapes for wine, and raised some pigs and cows. The creek was in a region much like the countryside in Lorraine, France from which he came and where there were many wine grapes grown. A blight wiped out the Ohio vineyards ca. 1870 to 1890. Reine's burial was witnessed by her husband and Charles Oliger M22(12), B. Formerian (415m) and Christian Juen (416m). Jacob's second marriage was witnessed by John Gallon (417m). Under the name of Jacob Oliger, he swore allegiance to the United States of America in Batavia, OH 4/2/1852. Jacob’s children were by his first marriage, born in Bourdonnay, Lorraine, France. The court originally appointed him as guardian of his orphaned grandchildren, Mary Bruniare M2261 and Henriet Bruniare (aka Harriet Bruniare) M2262, but later retracted (refer to the listing of Charles Oliger M22(12)). Josephine Parker was probably the same Josephine Parquet recorded in the 1850 U.S. Census as being 45 years of age, born in France, wife of Stephan Parquet (7m) who was 47 years of age and a farmer. They had Stephan Parquet (8m) and Constantine Parquet (9m). He was buried in St. Philomena Catholic Church’s graveyard near Owensville, OH. His gravestone reads “Jacob Oligee. Died Mar. 20, 1868. A_e 80 Ys.” M221 JEAN NICHOLAS OLIGER b. 9/2/1817 d. 9/27/1817

M222 MARIE FELICITE OLIGER b. 9/5/1818 d. 9/3/1836 M223 MARIE ANNE OLIGER b. 4/1/1820 m. 10/7/1840 to Charles Helvig P11 [see HELVIG history], born in Bourdonnay, France 7/26/1817. M2231 MARIE HELVIG b. 12/14/1840 in Bourdonnay, France M2232 CHARLES EDOUARD HELVIG b. 4/27/1855 in Maizières-lès-Vic, France M2233 MATHILDE HELVIG b. 3/28/1860 in Maizières-lès-Vic, France M224 MARGUERITE OLIGER b. 4/17/1821 d. 2/24/1853 in Ohio m. 3/6/1845 in France to Francois Demange (10m), born in 1818. Francois was a blacksmith in Moyenvic, France and son of Charles Demange (11m), an early blacksmith in Moyenvic and Francoise Mathieu (12m) of Dieuze, Lorraine, France. She may have entered the United States at New Orleans, LA 11/8/1847 on the Taghorn and he on the Tallahassee 6/2/1847. She may also have been the one legend says drowned in the rain-swollen Stonelick Creek near Batavia, OH while on the way to meet her widowed sister, Antoinette Bruniare M226, coming up from New Orleans, LA. Her burial at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Stonelick Creek, OH was witnessed by Jacob Walter (418m), John Kline (419m), L. Bartel (420m) and others. Her gravestone engravings are in French. It is possible they did not have children. M225 LOUIS BASILE OLIGER (aka BASIL OLIGER, BASILE OLIGER) b. 6/15/1823 d. 10/8/1871 in Highland County, OH m. 9/1/1856 Listetta Grand Jean (also recorded as Elizabeth Grandjohn) (13m), born in 1838

in France and died in 1907. She was the daughter of James Grandjohn (14m), born in 1797 and Susan ____?____ (15m), born in 1795, who also had Susan Grandjohn (16m), born in 1829 and James Grandjohn (17m), born in 1838. Their children were all born in France. The younger James (17m) was the father of:

1) Henry Grandjohn (18m), born in 1860 and never married; 2) Sophia Grandjohn (19m), born in 1856, married Eugene Goux (20m) and had no children; 3) Rosanna Grandjohn (21m), born in 1863; and 4) Louisa Grandjohn (aka Louise Grandjohn ?) (22m), born in 1865 and died in 1948. She did not

marry; but she had a son, John Y. Grandjohn (23m), who also never married. She was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery near Sardinia, OH. Her gravestone listed her first name as Louise. Her son was also buried in the same cemetery – his gravestone indicates he died in 1963.

All were born in Ohio.

After Louis's death, Listetta married Eugene Williams (421m) 6/23/1877, born in Etobon, Montbeliard, France and had Catherine Williams (422m), born in 1830 and Susan Williams (423m), born in 1829. She was buried next to Eugene with a common gravesite marker and near Louis in Ebenezer Cemetery near Sardinia, OH. He was probably the Louis Oliger, age 27, from France and a farmer, who entered the United States at New Orleans, LA 4/1/1851 on the Espindola. Apparently there were no children. He was appointed administrator of the estate of one Susan Lavine (24m), deceased, 1/17/1867. The probate papers show a James Grand Jean (17m ?) claiming that his father had a judgment against the estate of $119.99, which was paid. She was probably the Susan Grandjohn (16m) listed above. His nickname, by which everyone apparently called him, was Basil. His gravestone at Ebenezer Cemetery near Sardinia, OH bears the name of Basile Oliger. M226 BARBE ANTOINETTE OLIGER (aka ANTOINETTE OLIGER) b. 3/22/1825 d. 1/20/1858 near Owensville, OH m. ca. 1848 to Henry Bruniare (25m), possibly in New Orleans, LA. He was born in France in 1819 and probably died ca. 1854 in New Orleans, LA. She may have entered the United States at New Orleans, LA 6/2/1847 on the Espindola and he, along with his family, possibly on the Ducolion 7/23/1847. She was buried with her parents and two sisters, Marguerite and Marie Oliger Gomien, in St. Philomena Catholic Church’s cemetery at Stonelick Creek near Owensville, OH. Her burial was witnessed by her father and brothers Julius, Louis Basile, Lawrence and Charles. Family legend says he was a baker in New Orleans and was killed when a horse panicked, that Antoinette then traveled with her three children (said to be two girls and a boy) up the Mississippi River to rejoin her father, mother, brothers, etc. near Owensville, OH (then New Boston). The boy (possibly named Francis Bruniare (448m)) allegedly died of yellow fever on board the boat -- his body was thrown overboard. Legend further says that when she arrived at Cincinnati, OH, some of her family was on the way to meet

her; but there had been a heavy rain, the bridge over Stonelick Creek near Batavia washed away, their carriage overturned into the creek, and several persons (including at least one Oliger family member) drowned. If this story is true, the most likely victim would have been her sister, Marguerite Oliger M224. The 1850 U.S. Census for the 1st Ward, 3rd Municipality in New Orleans, LA listed the following information for this family: "Joseph Alsindor, 48, mulatto, tradesman, born LA $2500 M. Alsindor, 35, female, mulatto, born LA Antoinette Obligé, 25, female, born France Henry Obligé, 31, male, no occupation, born France Marie Obligé, 8/12, female, born LA" Little else is known about Barbe, whose family and others called Antoinette. She probably lived with Joseph Alsindor (26m) and his wife, M. Alsindor (27m) in New Orleans, LA and then with her parents on the Stonelick farm until her death, which family legend says was in childbirth (the baby also died). St. Philomena Church records, kept by Father L. Navarron (4m), show the baptism of three children 6/17/1855 -- Marie Brendar (age 6), Henriet Brendar, and Julia Brendar. Apparently there were hard feelings of an unknown nature about Antoinette's husband and so, after her death, both Marie M2261 and Henriet M2262 were raised as Oligers. M2261 MARIE BRUNIARE (aka MARIE OLIGER, MARY JANE OLIGER, MARIE OLOGY, MARY OLOGY) b. 12/1848 or 1/1849 in New Orleans, LA d. 9/17/1920 in Johnstown, OH m. (1st) 8/18/1870 (under the name of Mary Ology) by Rev. William Runyan (28m) in the Milford, OH Methodist Church to William H. Eigher (29m), born in Baden, Germany 6/4/1848 and died in Milford, OH 3/26/1879. He was the son of William H. Eigher (30m) and Christina ? (31m), both born and married in Baden, Germany and came to the United States in the early 1850s. They also had: 1) Charles Eigher (32m), a cooper born in Baden, Germany in 1847 and died in Batavia, OH in 1898, having married Elizabeth ? (33m), born in 1850 in Ireland (as were her parents). They in turn had:

a) William Eigher (34m), born in Mulberry, OH 3/13/1874 and died 10/15/1893; and b) Mary Eigher (35m), born in Ohio in 1878.

2) Peter Eigher (36m), born in Milford, OH, had a lumber business there and married Mollie Killinger

(37m). They had: a) Bessie Eigher (38m), who married Dr. Dan Skinner (39m) of Hamilton, OH and had a son,

William Skinner (40m), who died at the age of 22 years. 3) Rose Eigher (41m), who married ? Norris (42m); and 4) Mattie Eigher (43m), who married ? Aiken (44m). m. (2nd) in 1881 or 1882 in Madisonville (Cincinnati), OH to David Eicher Bechtel (aka David Eicher Lee) (45m), born 7/18/1848. He was the third child of Jane Flack (46m) and John F. Bechtel

1) James W. Bechtel (48m) of Burlington, IA; 2) John F. Bechtel (49m) of Columbus, OH; 3) Ann Bechtel (50m) who married ? Fogelsong (400m) of Duluth, MN; 4) Mary Bechtel (51m), born 12/16/1851 and died 9/4/1890, who married John P. Hawkins (52m) and

lived in Grand Rapids, MI; and 5) Jennie Bechtel (53m), who married ? Baird (401m) and lived in Wooster, OH.

When she and her sister, Harriet Bruniare M2262, were orphaned by the death of their mother in 1858, Marie was made the legal ward of her grandfather, Jacob Oliger M22. This guardianship was, however, transferred by the court to her uncle, Charles Oliger M22(12), in 1860 because of Jacob's "improper treatment" of her. The original entry by Father L. Navarron (4m) in St. Philomena Catholic Church baptism records documented that he baptized Maria Brendar, age 6 years, daughter of Henrici Brendar (sic) and Antoinette Oliger (sic) 6/17/1855. He also baptized her two sisters, Henriet and Julia. Her godparents were Roman Jacques Oliger M227 and Maria Sütter (54m). Once into adulthood, it appears Marie used the last name of Oliger or Ology, rather than Bruniare. She also went by the nickname of Mary Jane. Her second husband frequently used the last name of Lee, rather than Bechtel. She was buried with her first husband in Greenlawn Cemetery in Milford, OH. Her gravestone bears the name Mary Eigher Bechtel. M22611 HARRIET EIGHER (aka HATTIE EIGHER) b. 8/23/1872 d. 1/22/1933 in Milford, OH m. ? Powell (55m) She commonly went by the nickname of Hattie. m. 8/24/1872 to Andrew Balzhäuser J128 [see BALZHÄUSER history] The old baptism records of St. Philomena Catholic Church near Batavia, OH listed her name as Maria-Henriet Brendar, stating she was baptized 6/17/1855 at the age of four years and that her godparents were Charles Oliger M22(12) and Maria Schmitt (83m). She took her first communion at that church 8/21/1864. In her grandfather Jacob Oliger's will, she was referred to as “Harriet Oliger, commonly called Harriet Brenyer”, as was her sister, Marie, referred to as "Mary Oliger, commonly called Mary Brenyer". She was married under the name of Harriet Griner, while her last name on the birth records of her children in Batavia, OH was given as Brenner, Ulegy, Bruner, Brenier, Oliger, and Bruniare (this last in an affidavit sworn to by her youngest daughter, Anna Charlotte Balzhiser (aka Charlotte Balzhiser, Lottie Balzhiser) J1288, in 8/1942). The guardianship paper of Jacob Oliger M22 for Mary (Marie) listed her last name as Brinyer in 8/1860, but listed her father's name as Henry Brinyear. Two months later court papers transferring the guardianship of Mary to her uncle, Charles Oliger M22(12), referred to her as Mary Brinyear. In the 1860 U.S. Census these two girls were shown in the home of Charles Oliger and their last names there were given as Grunter, while the 1870 U.S. Census listed them as Mary Olirgy and Harriet Olegie. M2263 JULIA BRUNIARE b. probably in New Orleans, LA in 1/1854 Baptism records of St. Philomena Church near Batavia, OH list her date of baptism as 6/17/1855 when she was 18 months old. No other trace of her has yet been found. The evidence there is, however, unmistakable. She probably died before 1860. Her godparents were Nicholas Schmitt (84m) and Maria Oliger (M22(13) ?). There is a family legend that claims there was a male child, but no third girl. If there was a son, he may have been the twin of Julia; but he almost certainly would at least have been younger than either Mary or Harriet. No evidence of his existence has been found. The legend further says he died of yellow fever while coming up the Mississippi River with his mother and sisters (supposedly two sisters) and was buried in the river. If there was such a child, his name may have been Francis Bruniare (448m). (There was a yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans at that time.) [See BARBE ANTOINETTE OLIGER (aka ANTOINETTE OLIGER) M226] M227 ROMAIN JACQUES OLIGER (aka ROMAN JACQUES OLIGER, ROMAN JACQUES OLIGY) b. 10/13/1826 d. 10/24/1909 in Cincinnati, OH m. 7/12/1865 by Justice of the Peace John Rieves (85m) at Vera Cruz, OH to Louisa Teresa Faul (86m), born 8/12/1845 in Arnheim, OH and died of tuberculosis in Cincinnati, OH 7/29/1919. She was the daughter of Phillip Faul (87m), born in 1819 in the state of Hesse in Germany and Johanna Bindle (88m), born in 1825 in Württemberg, Germany. She was originally Lutheran, but was subsequently baptized as a Catholic in Holy Cross Church in Cincinnati, OH 4/10/1896. He apparently changed the spelling of his last name to Oligy about the time of his marriage. He was a Private in Co. D, 59th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers Infantry from 10/16/1861 to 11/1/1864. Romain was 5 ft. 5 in. tall, fair complexioned and had gray eyes. He swore allegiance to the United States in Batavia,

OH 4/3/1854. They lived in Cincinnati, OH from ca. 1889 until their deaths. Their children were all born in Brown County. He and his wife were buried in Calvary Cemetery in Cincinnati, OH. His name appears on his gravestone as Roman Oligy, hers as Louisa Oligy. M2271 MARY M. OLIGY b. 7/22/1866 m. ca. 1891 to William Dacey (89m) She was baptized in Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Vera Cruz, OH and was a dressmaker in Cincinnati, OH from 1889-1891. M22711 ?
