Dynamics give the full pictureDynamics describes how a system evolves over time. Steady-state represents a more general situation where a system’s observed condition is assumed to continue into the future – equilibrium. Typically, a system achieves a steady-state after some time has elapsed, the system’s condition in this time frame is said to be dynamic. Any changes to the system over time will therefore bring a system out of the steady-state and into a dynamic [or transient] state. Time affects motion, studying forces and how things move prepares us for the future.

Dynamics adds significant valueThe oil and gas industry uses steady-state calculations and modelling for many of the flow assurance challenges. These models are very useful, yet they do not account for phenomena caused by dynamics. Some of these include changes in flow rates, changes in flow compositions, temperature variations, corrosion and deposition of solids. Furthermore, these changes are more prevalent where the production contains more than one phase – e.g. oil, water and gas. Hence, dynamic modelling is a crucial tool for gaining the necessary knowledge and confidence for optimal production. OLGA brings the added dimension of dynamic modelling and is suited to make steady-state calculations.

Dynamics with high confidenceThrough years of innovation, testing and verification, OLGA has become the de-facto market standard for modelling flow dynamics. We focus our efforts to ensure that OLGA evolves with market needs and covers the critical challenges met in real life. OLGA is not just a software, it is approaching a discipline in itself and our emphasis is equally divided between the importance of modelling true dynamics and lowering the threshold for use and comprehension through user interfaces and training.

Flow Models - because accuracy matters

Flow model development – the heart of OLGA

The flow model is the basis for any successful flow simulation; the model contains the physics describing flow in a given cross section of the pipeline and OLGA integrates this information along the pipeline or over the pipeline network.

In SPT Group, we pride ourselves on an ongoing development and continuous improvement of our flow models for key flow regimes such as stratified, annular, slug and bubble flow. SPT Group scientists, in collaboration with industry partners and award winning researchers at the Institute for Energy Technology, perform basic and applied research towards the essential challenge of always improving the fundamental physics, quality, and simulation speed required for the flow models in OLGA.

Furthermore, we apply a substantial effort to constantly tune and improve our existing flow models through the OLGA Verification and Improvement

Program (OVIP), wherein partners provide field data used to verify and tune OLGA and continuously expand the operating envelope of the simulation engine. Our involvement in academic and industry-financed projects secures that we are at the forefront of applied research for flow modelling.

With OLGA 7, SPT Group has launched a revolutionary new flow model for stratified flow called OLGA High Definition (HD). This step-change technology is available as a new module in OLGA and is the first flow model in the industry where the real pipe geometry forms the basis for the physics. This yields better accuracy in predictions of key parameters such as liquid hold-up, liquid content and pressure loss – crucial for stratified flow regimes. OLGA HD can also render the simulation results in three dimensions for a pipe section – enhancing the available analytical capabilities and decision support significantly.

Modularity - because versatility matters

The Slugtracking module tracks each individual slug from its formation to either its exit from the pipeline or its extinction. The model considers the mechanisms of slug formation, merging of slugs, growth and decay of slugs.

The Compositional Tracking module allows dynamic change in fluid composition and tracking of individual components along the pipeline.

The Corrosion module predicts the variation in corrosion rate along a pipeline where temperature, pressure, flow velocity and flow regime varies.

The FEMtherm module simulates the thermal interaction among production flowlines, heating lines and other lines that are enclosed within a bundle.

The Multiphase Pump module optimises multiphase boosting, design and operational analysis with available models for both centrifugal and displacement pumps.

The Wells module simulates the transient multiphase flow in the wellbore where the reservoir properties and inflow relationships plays important roles when modelling the scenarios.

The Wax module predicts the requirements for pigging for wax removal, thermal insulation, active heating and chemical injections.

The Single Component module allows for simulation of transient behaviour of single components and their transition between liquid and gas phase as well as their behaviour beyond critical point.

The Hydrate Kinetics module predicts the onset of solid hydrate and their formation rate.

The Inhibitor Tracking module tracks the concentration of hydrate inhibitor (MEG, MeOH or EtOH) concentration in the water and gas phase.

The Complex Fluid module discloses severe effects on flow stability, liquid inventory and pressure drop due to Non-Newtonian liquids.

The Tuning module tunes the flow models against data – online or offline the module accesses a number of model parameters to be adjusted.

The High Definition flow module covers stratified and large wave flow regimes - providing more consistent, scalable and accurate predictions of pressure drop and holdup.

The Risk Management and Optimisation module offers a systematic way of studying the risk picture and identifying the major risk contributors in a general flow assurance project.

The Plugin module is a flexible framework for implementing users’ proprietary or external physical models in OLGA as DLLs.

The Advanced Blowout Control tool is an efficient simulation tool applicable from planning to operations. - In planning, establish contingency plans and operational procedures in the event of blowouts, and estimation of flow rates for environmental risk assessment. - In operations, update contingency plans with the latest operational information. - During an actual blowout, evaluation of different kill options to find the best way to regain control of the well.
