REBEL NOTES | 6
OLE MISS HEAD COACH MATT LUKE Matt Luke (Ole Miss, 2000) is in his 12th season at Ole Miss and third season at the helm, taking the reins of his alma mater as the 38th head coach in program history . He was born a Rebel as his family has ties to Ole Miss that span three generations . During his 25 years as a player and coach at the collegiate level, Luke has risen through the ranks while learning from a number of successful veteran coaches . He has worked alongside national champion Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer, Duke head coach David Cutcliffe and former Ole Miss head coach Tommy Tuberville, among others . Luke, a four-year center for the Rebels (1995-98), spent five seasons as the team’s co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach before being promoted to interim head coach for the 2017 season . During his first stop in Oxford (2002-05), he served four seasons coaching the Ole Miss tight ends and offensive line under Cutcliffe .
MEMPHIS HEAD COACH MIKE NORVELLMike Norvell (Central Arkansas, 2005) is in his fourth year as Memphis’ head coach and owns an 26-14 record with the Tigers . In his three years at Memphis, Norvell has helped lead Memphis to two American Athletic Conference West Division titles and countless broken records . Year one of the Norvell-era offense featured the second most-prolific of-fense in program history at the time, behind only 2015, rolling up the second-most total yards (6,028) and scoring the second-most points (505) for a season in school history . Year two shattered the 2016 marks with 6,917 total yards, and 592 points scored . The Memphis offense also scored the most touchdowns (74) for a campaign in program history in 2017, including a school season-record 39 touchdown passes . The 2018 Tigers finished with the first 7,000-yard season (7,324) in program history and also broke the single-season touchdown record with 80 . Norvell earned both his bachelor’s (education in social studies, 2005) and master’s (training systems, 2007) degrees from Central Arkansas .
TIGER SCOUTING REPORTMemphis is the two-time defending champ of the American Athletic Conference’s West Division and looks to make a run at a third division title . Running backs Darrell Henderson and Tony Pollard opted to declare for the NFL Draft, but Patrick Taylor Jr . will shoulder much of the offensive load after gaining 1,122 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground last season . At quarterback, Brady White returns after passing for nearly 3,300 yards and 26 touchdowns . Leading receiver Damonte Coxie returns for the Tigers . Coxie hauled in 72 catches for 1,174 yards and seven scores last season . Tight end Joey Magnifico had five TD receptions and averaged a team-leading 17 .3 yards per catch . Memphis’ defensive line returns three of its four starters, including three-year starter Jonathan Wilson . Wilson finished tied for second on the team in 2018 with six sacks . Senior defensive end Bryce Huff led the Tigers in tackles for a loss (19) and sacks (9 .5) and tied for the lead in quarterback hurries (7) last year . The defensive backfield returns two starters in cornerback T .J . Carter and strong safety Tyrez Lindsey . Carter, a junior, has started since his true freshman season and was third on the team last year with 68 total tackles .

OPENERSThe Rebels are 92-27-5 ( .762 winning percentage) in season openers and have taken 19 of the last 22 on the field . This is the fourth time in the last six years that Ole Miss has opened the season away from Oxford . The Rebels are 4-1 in those games . Of their 62 meetings, the Rebels and Memphis have met 31 times in season openers . The Rebels are 25-5-1 verus Memphis in those contests . This is the first time Ole Miss and Memphis have met in a season opener since 2008 . The Rebels and Tigers faced off against each other in nine straight season openers from 1982-90 and then again from in five straight openers from 2004-2008 .
OLE MISS IN AUGUST• Ole Miss is 8-0 all-time during the month of August on the field .• Two of the eight August contests were SEC games (‘03 Vandy, ‘13 Vandy) .• Ole Miss and Memphis have played in August one time with Ole Miss defeating Memphis 41-24 on Aug . 30, 2008 .• The first August game in program history was in 1991 at Tulane .
WATCH LIST REBELSOle Miss players have garnered a bunch of preseason honors this year, including several players tabbed Preseason All-America and Preseason All-SEC by media outlets . The following Rebels have been recognized on watch lists for some of the biggest awards in college football:
• Mac Brown: Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Wuerffel Tropy• Octavious Cooley: Mackey Award• Matt Corral: FWAA Freshman All-America Team• Jerrion Ealy: FWAA Freshman All-America Team• Luke Logan: Lous Groza Award• Scottie Phillips: Doak Walker Award, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award• MoMo Sanogo: Butkus Award
125 SEASONS OF OLE MISS FOOTBALLThis game will kick off the 125th season of football at Ole Miss and the third under head coach Matt Luke . The Rebels boast an all-time record of 638-524-35 ( .548 winning percentage) . Ole Miss did not field teams in 1897 due to an epidemic of yellow fever, and also in 1943 when football was abolished at all Mississippi state-supported institutions by the Board of Trustees .
TACKLING MACHINEIn his first year as a full-time starter, LB MoMo Sanogo finished third in the SEC with 9 .3 tackles per game and heads into the 2019 season as an All-SEC preseason selection and is on the Butkus Award watch list . Sanogo became just the second Rebel in the last 12 seasons to surpass the 100-tackle mark when he tallied 112 total tackles last season . Prior to the 2018 campagin, there had been only two Rebel defensive players in the last 20 years tally 16 or more tackles in a single game; Sanogo accomplished that feat twice last season .
MAC BROWN RAISES NEARLY 70K FOR ALSWhen he was in seventh grade, Ole Miss punter Mac Brown had a modest goal of raising $500 for a childhood friend’s dad who had been diagnosed with ALS . Along with a group of neighborhood friends, Brown started a lemonade stand, Awesome Lemonade Stand, in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, to help his friend’s family . Eight years later, that $500 goal has ballooned to nearly $70,000 raised by Brown and his friends for ALS research . The Awesome Lemonade Stand is held on a late day in June and this year’s fundraiser raised more than $17,000 alone .
HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCEAfter the 2018 campaign, Matt Luke found himself in the market for both an offensive and defensive coordinator, and he delivered in a big way . Mike MacIntyre, a two-time national coach of the year and coaching veteran with nearly three decades of experience, will take over the reigns as the Rebels’ defensive coordinator while Rich Rodriguez, considered one of the most innovative offensive minds in college football, will serve as Ole Miss’ offensive coordinator . Ole Miss is one of only two teams in the nation, along with Alabama, to have three coaches with Power 5 head coaching experience .
GETTING DEFENSIVE A large portion of Ole Miss’ experience is on the defensive side of the ball as the Rebels bring back 33 letterwinners and eight starters from the 2018 Landshark defense . Nearly half of the returning defensive players, 19, have starting ex-perience and should provide quality depth for Mike MacIntyre as the Rebels transition to a 3-4 base defensive system . Seniors Benito Jones and Josiah Coatney will help anchor the Rebel defensive line . Coatney finished third on the team in 2018 with 63 total tackles, while Jones was a load on the inside, recording nine tackles for loss and six quarterback hurries . Linebacker MoMo Sanogo returns for his junior campaign after leading Ole Miss in tackles last season with 112 . The Rebels also return some key starters and additional depth in the secondary . Myles Hartsfield and Jalen Julius are back for their senior seasons, while cornerback and return specialist Jaylon Jones will also return from injury to help add experience in the Rebel defensive backfield .
LOOKING TO RELOAD On the offensive side of the ball, Rich Rodriguez and the Rebels will have some big shoes to fill with the loss of eight starters, including All-America performers A.J. Brown and Greg Little . After Jordan Ta’amu lit up the scoreboard in 2018, finishing fourth in the country in passing yards per game (326 .5), the Rebels hope another first-year starter finds the same success . Redshirt freshman Matt Corral is back after appearing in four games last season . In a few spot appearances in 2018, Corral was 16-of-22 through the air for 239 yards and two TDs . With the loss of Brown, as well as the departure of D.K. Metcalf and DaMarkus Lodge, the Nasty Wideouts (nWo) will look for some new faces to step in and take the belt . Sophomore Elijah Moore returns after appearing in all 12 games as a true freshman, hauling in 36 catches for 398 yards and two TDs . Braylon Sanders will be relied upon as the junior from Hogansville, Georgia, has the most experience of any Ole Miss wideout with 16 career games played . While the Rebels look to replace starters at most offensive positions, the Ole Miss running back group should be a strong point of attack in 2019 . Prior to dealing with an injury in the latter part of 2018, Scottie Phillips ranked in the top 10 nationally in nearly every rushing category and was on pace to challenge for the Ole Miss single-season rushing record . Despite playing sparringly over the final three contests, Phillips finished 2018 with 928 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground . His 14 total TDs ranked fifth in the SEC . Preseason All-SEC tackle Alex Givens and guard Ben Brown, a 2018 Freshman All-SEC selection, both return to help anchor the Ole Miss offensive line .
CHUCKY MULLINS COURAGE AWARDIn the spring, senior DE Austrian Robisnon became the 29th different Rebel to be awarded the Chucky Mullins Courage Award, which goes to a standout defensive player each year . The award honors the late Chucky Mullins, who had his Ole Miss career come to an end during the 1989 Homecoming game against Vanderbilt when he was paralyzed after making a tackle . After returning to his studies at Ole Miss, Mullins passed away May 6, 1991 . Robinson wears the No . 38 jersey in Mullins’ honor this season .
LUKE’S WEEKLY RADIO SHOW ON TUESDAYSRebTalk, the official weekly radio show of Ole Miss Athletics, is moving to a new day and location for this season . Begin-ning Aug . 27, RebTalk will be broadcast each Tuesday this fall at Bouré in downtown Oxford from 7-8 p .m . The show, which is hosted by the “Voice of the Rebels” David Kellum and includes special guests, will air live on the Ole Miss IMG Sports Network . REBEL NOTES | 11
At Ole Miss, Landshark is a term that was first adopted by the Rebel football team’s defensive unit . As part of that identity, defensive players celebrate big plays by putting a hand to their forehead in the shape of a shark fin . A battle cry of “Fins Up” also contributes to the play-ers’ persona . With the popularity of both the players and the hand gesture, Ole Miss fans and student-athletes from other sports embraced the spirit of the Landshark, and in October 2017, the university announced the Landshark as the official mascot of the Ole Miss Rebels .
Tony, Ole Miss’ new on-field mascot, was unveiled in 2018 .
Roots of the Landshark at Ole Miss date back to 2008 . After four straight losing seasons, the Rebel football team returned to national prominence with a 9-4 record and a victory over 7th-ranked Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl . Leading the charge was a defensive squad that ranked fourth in the nation in rushing defense .
The term Landshark originated that season from senior linebacker Tony Fein, an Army veteran who served a one-year tour in the Iraq War before arriving in Oxford . A two-year letterman after transferring from Scottsdale (Ariz .) Community College, Fein was the 2008 recipient of the Pat Tillman Award by the Military Order of the Purple Heart . Matt Luke was born a Rebel . His family has ties to Ole Miss that span three generations . Now, he has achieved a lifelong dream by taking over the reins of his alma mater . Ole Miss made it of-ficial on Nov . 27, 2017, removing the interim tag and introducing Luke as the 38th head coach in program history . Headed into his third year at the helm, Luke has bolstered his staff by adding more than 60 years of coaching experience with the addition of new coordinators and former Pac 12 Coach of the Year winners, Mike MacIntyre and Rich Rodriguez . The Gulf-port native continued that momentum by assembling a top-25 recruiting class in February . Luke’s 2018 Rebels finished amogst the top 20 nationally in multiple statistical categories including total offense, passing yards per completion, passing efficiency, fumbles lost and defen-sive touchdowns . Nine Rebels received invitations to the 2019 NFL Combine, the fourth-most invitees by any school in the country . Six were drafted, which is Ole Miss’ most since 1971 . A .J . Brown, earned multiple All-America honors after a season that saw him become Ole Miss’ all-time leading receiving in yards, as well as set single-season marks in both receiving yards and receptions . Senior quarterback Jordan Ta’amu led the SEC and ranked fourth nationally with 326 .5 yards passing per game . Ta’amu’s 3,918 passing yards were second-most on the Ole Miss single-season charts . Sophomore MoMo Sanogo led the Rebel defense with 112 tackles and became just the second Ole Miss player in the last 12 years to tally 100-plus tackles in a single season . In his first year at Ole Miss, Luke faced the daunting challenge of taking over the team just a week before 2017 fall camp and responded by helping the Rebels bounce back from a losing season to post a 6-6 record . Ole Miss won three of its final four games, including a 31-28 road victory at Mississippi State to return the Golden Egg to Oxford . Luke, a four-year center for the Rebels (1995-98), just wrapped up his 11th season as a coach at Ole Miss . Prior to taking over as interim head coach, Luke spent five seasons as the team’s co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach . During his first stop in Oxford (2002-05), Luke served four seasons coaching the Ole Miss tight ends and offensive line under Cutcliffe . A product of Gulfport High School, Luke lettered four seasons (1995-98) as a center at Ole Miss . A starter in 33 career games for the Rebels, he served as team captain in 1998 as Ole Miss posted a 7-5 ledger and defeated Texas Tech in the Independence Bowl . He was named the 1998 Ole Miss Most Valuable Senior by the Jackson (Miss .) Touchdown Club and twice earned Academic All-SEC honors . Following his playing career, he served as a student assistant coach at Ole Miss in 1999, helping the Rebels to an 8-4 mark with regular-season wins against Auburn, South Carolina, LSU and Arkansas as well as a 27-25 triumph over Oklahoma in the Indepen-dence Bowl . He graduated in May 2000 with a degree in business administration . His father, Tommy, was a defensive back at Ole Miss in the 1960s while his brother, Tom, quarterbacked the Rebels from 1989-91 . Tom is also on the Ole Miss football staff as assistant athletics director for player development . Luke is married to the former Ashley Grantham of Oxford, Mississippi, and the couple has two sons, Harrison and Cooper .
