General Search Strategies

• matches word entered with words in text

• most common method of searching

• use synonyms or variants of topic• use discipline-specific terms• use narrower or broader terms• break up phrases into single

Library Resources & ServicesResearch Consultations

• Request Individual Research Consultation• Individual Research Consultations are available for students, faculty, and

staff. These sessions allow you to work one-on-one with a librarian. In order to give you the best research assistance, please give us at least two days notice for your request.

Interlibrary Loan

• Interlibrary Loan is a Library lending service available to current TxState faculty, students and employees. ILL borrows items from other libraries that the Alkek Library does not own. Use ILLIAD, the online interlibrary loan request system, to order your ILL items.

• Typical turnaround for a book is 2 weeks. If articles are found in electronic format, requests can be sent via email.

• Phone: 512.245.4893 M -F 8:00am - 5:00pm in Room 213• After hours go to Reference Desk on the second floor.

Texshare Cards

• Texshare cards allow you borrowing privileges when visiting participating libraries.All current students and employees are eligible. Request a card online through this TexShare card form. Sign up in person at the Circulation Desk . Or contact Circulation at 512.245.3681, [email protected].

The Invisible Web

• Fee-based or password protected content

• Non-text files like .ppt, .pdf, images, etc

• Dynamically generated pages (databases etc)

• Search engines only access about 1% of web content

• Invisible web is estimated to be about 500 times bigger than the visible web

Google and other Google Flavors

• Google advanced search can help• Use it to specify searches for non-

text files like .ppt and .pdf.• Can also specify by domain• Google Image –searches for

images• Google Books—can search for

terms in book content• Google Blogs —searches for

content in Blogs

Google Scholar

• It's a version of Google that searches for scholarly content

• Using Google Scholar often helps uncover items from different and unexpected databases.

• Google Scholar --If you are on campus, searching Google Scholar will link to the subscription sources available to you as Texas State faculty. If you are off-campus, you can get the same "Google Scholar effect" by accessing Google Scholar from the Library Databases link. If you are off campus, you will be prompted for your TxState NetID to access content.

RSS & Journal Alerts

• Many databases have alerts to notify you of new journal issues or search results.

• RSS feeds saves you time. • Some popular RSS feed readers:

– Bloglines– Google Reader– My Yahoo!– News on Feeds list of aggregators

• Citeulike is a social sharing site for journal articles.

• Del.icio.us is a social sharing site for bookmarks.
