Interest in New York, so far a.s mov- ing pictures go, is centred in the light waged in the courts by Robert Goelet, as owner, through inheritance from his father, to dispossess the Triangle Film Corporation from the Knicker- bocker Theatre at Broadway and Thir- ty-eighth street, which the corporation occupies under a sub-lease, on the ground that the Triangle people en- danger the classification and rental value of the theatre by giving the pub- lic too much for its money. The lease calls for the operation of the institu- tion as a "first-class theatre." It is Mr. Goelet's contention that the opera- ation of a continuous moving picture performance and the introduction of a symphony orchestra and vocal and instrumental soloists tends to place the performance in the classification of a variety program, which is ranked as "third class." The Triangle corporation maintains that the music is for the purp'ose of imparting the proper atmosphere for the correct presentation of its pic- tures; tluit the continuity of the per- formance is simply a matter of con- venience for the public, and that "first class" prices are charged inasmuch as a large part of the balcony, the loges and boxes sell at $2 per seat, although the choice of seats in the remainder of the house may be had at 25 "and 50 cents. It is probable that the court may be called upon to view William S. Ham's performance of "Hell's Hinges," if the proceeding is disposed of this week, otherwise Lillian Gish ind Elliott Dexter in "Daphne and the Pirate" should the determination of the matter go over until next week (Feb. 14). In addition, in viewing the premises and framing an opinion as to the clas- sification the theatre is entitled to as now operated, the august court will have occasion to view two of the fa- mous Triangle-Keystone ' comedies, among them "His Hereafter." Justice Donnelly, of the Supreme Court, has the decision in hand, and it is expect- ed to go a long way toward standard- izing the status of the moving picture as an institution and also towards fur- nishing a legal foundation for the clas- sification of theatres, which is now an arbitrary matter in the hands of a small group of amusement managers. hurricanes of applause for their artis- tic portrayal of the several vital char- acters in Max Marcin's most absorb- ing play. Longabre Theatre. Few ( triumphs in the theatre have been greater than that scored by Leo Ditrichstein in "The Great Lover" at the Longacre Theatre, where this bril- liant comedy is meeting with a suc- cess that finds expression in a never- ending line of ticket buyers at the box office. New York Hippodrome. Every week seems like a holiday pe- riod at the Hippodrome, where Charles Dillingham's joyous pageant of de- light amuses crowds twice daily, but this week, which ends with Lincoln's Birthday, is a particularly active one. Several large theatre parties are add- ing to the gayety, with the employes of the American Telephone and Tele- graph Company and the Guarantee Trust Company being entertained on' Friday night. It. H. Burnside secured a fine effect this past week by indicat- ing the movements of President Wil- son in the Ballet of the States. Each night the girls representing the State in which the chief Executive was be- ! ng entertained carried tiny American Hags. One night it was the Wisconsin girls, then those from Iowa; another night, the Illinois girls, Kansas, etc. Seats are now on sale to March 18, in- cluding those for St. Patrick's Day. "Hip Hip Hooray"—two hundred times. On Tuesday matinee of last week the great pageant'of delight at the Hippodrome ended its second cen- tury with a record full of remarkable achievements. Pleasure has been brought to one million patrons and the spacious playhouse on Sixth avenue has re-established it. r -elf as a National institution that is unique in the his- tory of the American stage. Among the many interesting fea- tures one might observe in connectio.n with this memorable season is the precision with which the massive spec- tacle moves after its 200th presenta- tion. The whole production passes in review with clocklike discipline, and in the whole four months of its ca- reer but few performances have varied in running time. P. H. Burnside's rec- ords show that every day the perform- ances begin precisely at 2:15 and 8:15 and the final curtains were, drawn two hours and forty-five minutes later at each performance but seven. At six of these, during holiday week, a doll was presented to some child attend- ing the matinees, which consumed two additional minutes, and at the Sousa birthday anniversary a presentation to the popular "March King" took up seven minutes more than usual. At all other performances not one min- ute's difference is recorded. This fact, with a production as • stupendous as "Hip Hip Hooray," speaks volumes for the discipline and efficiency of the Hippodrome of today. LEGAL. Shake Inte Your SJIOCH A.1 Urn's Foot-Base, the antiseptic ])uw- di;r for painful, smarting, tender, ner- vous feet. It takes the stinpr out of corns and bunions. Over 100,000 pack- ages are being used hy the Gorman and Allied troops at the front. Sold everywhere, 2!ic. Interminable. "What do you think will be I lie end of tin* woman question?" "There won't be any cud. They'll always be asking 'em." — Pittsburgh Press. * LEGAL. The trouble brewing between the regular theatres and those of the high- er class devoted to moving pictures, because of the inroads made by the latter in the field hitherto monopolized by the former, promises to receive a new impetus when the Rialto Theatre opens its doors. The huge structure is now under construction on the &ite of Hammerstein's once famous theatre of varieties at Forty-second street and Seventh avenue, and is expected to open its doors to the public in March. Neither money nor thought has been spared in making it the finest institu- tion of its kind in the world. Hence its importance in the struggle that has just begun. S. L. Rothapfel, who is commonly regarded as the father of the modern moving picture theatre, is responsible for the Rialto. He gave New York its first genuinely first-class moving picture house; then the Strand Thea- tre as an improvement upon it; then the Knickerbocker Theatre as a still further improvement, and now he is erecting the Rialto as the last word in that department of entertainment. Innovations will be the watchword at the Rialto from entrance to screen. They are so numerous that no attempt has been made as yet to describe them in detail. Harris Theatre. Fred Niblo and the balance of the original cast that successfully pre- sented George M. Cohan's American farce, "Hit-the-Trail Holliday," at the Astor Theatre for the past six months, moved into the Harris on Monday night, where the New York run of this uproariously funny play will be con- tinued indefinitely^ Candler Theatre.
