February 2008 Ms. Sherri Thompson Bureau of Land Management Oil Shale and Tar Sands Draft Programmatic EIS Comments 9700 South Cass Avenue Argonne, U- 60439 RE: Support Safe I)evelopment of Domestic Oil Shale and Tar Sands Resources Dear Ms. Thompson: I support the thoughtful and appropriate use of our nation's natural energy resources to help lower consumer costs and increase national energy security. We must allow for the development of our national oil shale and tar sands resources, including the leasing in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming as proposed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in its Draft Programmatic EIS, in order to reduce our reliance on foreign oil imports. Government estimates conclude that portions of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming contain at least 800 billion barels of recoverable oil from oil shale and 12 to 19 billion barrels of tar sands oil. With today's technolory, we can develop these resources in an environmentally sound manner. There is a great need to develop unconventional fuels, such as oil shale and tar sands, in ways that reduce environmental impacts and increase socio-economic benefits for local and regional communities. Utilizing the oil shale and tar sands from these leasing areas will strengthen our national enerry securit5r, bolster local communities and bring the necessary supplies of oil into the markets to offset increased global demand. I support the development of thes" ateas while protecting the environment, local communities and other economic interests. Sincerely, Name: Address: E-mail: OSTS_00166

RE: Support Safe I)evelopment of Domestic Oil Shale and Tar Sands Resources
Dear Ms. Thompson:
I support the thoughtful and appropriate use of our nation's natural energy resources to help lowerconsumer costs and increase national energy security. We must allow for the development of our nationaloil shale and tar sands resources, including the leasing in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming as proposed bythe Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in its Draft Programmatic EIS, in order to reduce our reliance onforeign oil imports.
Government estimates conclude that portions of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming contain at least 800 billionbarels of recoverable oil from oil shale and 12 to 19 billion barrels of tar sands oil.
With today's technolory, we can develop these resources in an environmentally sound manner. There is agreat need to develop unconventional fuels, such as oil shale and tar sands, in ways that reduceenvironmental impacts and increase socio-economic benefits for local and regional communities.
Utilizing the oil shale and tar sands from these leasing areas will strengthen our national enerry securit5r,bolster local communities and bring the necessary supplies of oil into the markets to offset increasedglobal demand. I support the development of thes" ateas while protecting the environment, localcommunities and other economic interests.
