The elimination of accumulated environmental damage in the Arctic

Chronology of events:2010 – Made a decision to implement the cleaning works in the Arctic region.2011 – Implementation of geo-ecological surveys of the archipelago of Franz Josef Land.2012 - The beginning of works to eliminate past environmental damage in the Arcticregion, Alexandra and Hooker islands. Eliminated more than 9,000 tons.2013 - prevention of environmental disasters on the Graham Bell island, the continuationof works on the islands of Alexandra and Hooker. Start of works on North Arch. NewEarth.It eliminates more than 12,000 tonnes.2014 - the beginning of works Heiss island, continuation of works on. Alexandra land,Franz Josef Land, New Earth.It eliminated more than 10 000 tonnes.2015 - the beginning of works on Hoffmann island, continuation of works on the islandsHeiss and Graham Bell, Franz Josef Land, New Earth.Eliminated more than 4,000 tons (09/10/2015).

Within the boundaries of the Arctic zone of Russia there are 22 protected areas of Federal importance, making a substantial contribution to the conservation of

biological and landscape diversity of the region.

Among them:11 state nature reserves;

2 national parks; 9 Federal reserves.

The impact of climate change on the Arctic region

the deterioration of the access of reindeer to food (reindeer moss) by increasing the height of the snow cover

polar bears and seals have difficulty feeding, reproduction, adaptation to changing landscapes

the increasing adverse impacts of insects, the movement of the centers of mass reproduction of pests and diseases of plants (forests)

partial thawing of the Islands long-term frozen soil near the southern border of permafrost;

a sharp increase in the probability of emergency situations in disturbed areas of permafrost (buildings, structures, line features)

the increase in the length of the growing season the extension of fodder for the reindeer preserving or increasing the number of sable, moose, squirrels, foxes, muskrats the reduction of cases of freezing and freezing of wild plants improving breeding and nursery areas of fish, etc.

in areas with soil temperature below -3°C, a noticeable response of permafrost to

Arctic agenda 2020

International program of the Russian Federation and the GEF The partnership on sustainable environmental management in the Arctic in a rapidly changing climate «Arctic Agenda 2020»One of the most ambitious corrent international program on

improving governance and the environment in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, which consists of 6 projects. The total grant amount is about 24 million US dollars. The draft program

was approved by the Arctic Council and the results of the individual projects will be the contribution of the Russian

Federation in the work of the five Working groups of the Arctic Council

The GEF – United Nations environment protection (UNEP)«Nomadic herders»

The project aims to strengthen the capacity of nomadic herders in the field of biodiversity conservation and natural resource management, and strengthen opportunities to work with the

private sector and authorities in the processes of land-use planning. The grant amount is about 5 million.US dollars
