1 The Solution In this project, AOMS LumiAPM sensing solution was deployed for direct detection of oil leaks inside the fence. OIL & GAS PIPELINE CASE STUDY CLIENT CONFIDENTIAL OIL & GAS INDUSTRY LUMIAPM SOLUTION US & CANADA LOCATION Company Introduction The client is a Canadian integrated energy company based in Alberta that specializes in the production of synthetic crude from oil sands. The client operates several refineries across Canada and the United States supplying industrial, retail, and commercial consumers. The company is also one of the largest Canadian retailers of petroleum products. The Challenge The client was faced with the challenge of detecting hydrocarbon leaks in their major oil and gas pipelines. Hydrocarbon leaks are a global problem and can occur at all levels of the oil & gas supply chain including oil & gas rigs, pipelines, refineries, and processing plants. Although the existing leak detection (LD) technologies can marginally address the market demand, there are still technological and economical barriers to the implementation of an effective solution, especially in critical locations such as pipelines passing near public areas, public infrastructure, and sensitive areas such as rivers and lakes (called “Critical Areas”) which are typically short distance (a few hundred meters to 2 km). Existing LD methods rely on secondary parameters, i.e., detection of leak through acoustics or temperature effects which can create “False Positive Error”. Moreover, the existing distributed sensing solutions are not economically efficient for short distance monitoring.
