A SEAN Economic Community (AEC) is a unity of Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Indonesia, as a member of AEC, will face a big challenge in economic section because in the year of 2015, either ready or not, AEC will take part in increasing the regional economic development. However, Syiah Kuala University will participate to take this opportunity to increase educational section through AEC program. “This year we will increase mobility program for students and faculty exchanges, improve social and cultural recognitions, and develop intimacy among ASEAN countries,” said Head of Office of International Affairs (OIA) of Syiah Kuala University, Dr. Iskandarsyah, SE, MM, at OIA office on few days ago (1/16). As a proof of supporting this AEC program, OIA Syiah Kuala University provides photo booth of AEC program at OIA office, decorated with flags that show the origin of ASEAN countries. Photo booth with tagline “Let’s Go Asean” is expected to be a trigger for Syiah Kuala University students to participate in this AEC program and be ready to face the economic challenge through educational section. On January 8, 2015, Mr. Basri Ahmed, Consulate General of India made a visit to Unsyiah. Then, Ash-ish Sharma, known as the author of Pearls from the Ocean of Heart, with his family visited Syiah Kuala University in group of delegates. They all recieved a warm welcome from Prof. Ir. Samsul Rizal, M.Eng, Rector of Unsyiah, Dr. Nazamuddin, SE, MM, Vice Rector for Relationships, and academic staffs of Un-syiah in Balai Senat 2nd floor of Biro Rektor build-ing. The purpose of this visit was to convey rec-ognitions toward Unsyiah. In this occasion, they intended to contribute some books to Syiah Kuala University Library in order to support “India Cor-ner”, a room that provides varieties of books that relate to India. At the end of visiting, the delegation was entertained with India Dance which performed by Unsyiah Art students. Although this visit was in short of time, but hopefully it will enhance and strengthen the coop-eration between Syiah Kuala University and Consul-ate General of India.

On March 24, 2015, Irena Hadiwijoyo as a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist

from USAID Prestasi Scholarship Program paid a visit to Syiah Kuala University. In that occasion, she got a warm welcome from Chairman of Office of International Affairs, Dr. Iskandarsyah, SE, MM. She came in order to present Prestasi Scholarship 2015 to Un-syiah students. USAID Prestasi Scholarship with theme “Program to Extend Scholarship and Training to Achieve Sustainable Im-pacts” provides opportunities for Indone-sian students to earn Master degrees in selected fields such as Education, Health, Environment, and Economic Growth. Dr. Iskandarsyah said that he will fully support Unsyiah students to apply this scholarship and hoped that the program will encourge students and alumni to study abroad. So let’s go global!

Who does not want to be healthy? Surely, everybody wants to be healthy. Without

healthy, and disease inside your body you will not live your life well. The disease can be spread by creatures, such as mosquito. Mosquito is dan-gerous and even it can kill billion of people in this world. Thus, in order to solve this mosqui-to problem, we need to know solutions that can avoid mosquito from our live. This such of mosquitos case already dis-cussed at seminar and workshop of “Metode Sampling, Deteksi, Analisis, dan Pengendalian Penyakit Bersumber Nyamuk (Malaria, Filariasis, dan DBD)” on March 10 – 12, 2015, hosted by The Center for Tropical Veterinary Studies (Cen-trovets). This seminar and workshop, which col-laborated with Faculty of Veterinary Syiah Kuala University, took place in Auditorium Hall, 2nd floor of Veterinary Faculty. Besides, this seminar was also attended by Prof. Dr. Hiroyuki Matsu as a keynote speaker

from Department of Medical Zoology, Medical School of Jichi Medical University, Japan. In this opportunity, Prof. Hiroyuki pre-sented some topics. He held seminar and work-shop with topic of “Fluorescence microscopy for diagnosing mosquito borne diseases”. Then he also held seminar that discussed about “Utilizing copper for mosquito larvae control: A new sim-ple low-cost method”, and continued with train-ing workshop about “ELISA technique for diag-nosing dengeu and filarial diseases”. On the last day of seminar and workshop, Prof. Hiroyuki with all of participant did field re-search training for mosquito borne in “Taman Hutan Kota – BNI” Banda Aceh. Lastly, the sem-inar and workshop closed with trees planting at Taman Hutan Kota – BNI.

With purpose to increase enthusiastic of studying, sixteen Architectural students of Technology Sydney Uni-versity (UTS) visited Syiah Kuala University on January 26, 2015. They came to attending Joining Class Program which initiated by these two University of Architectural Depart-ment for ten days. During that short program, the students had valuable experiences in academic activities such as attending lectures and workshop that were held by Syiah Kuala University. Moreover, the UTS student also visited several coffee shops in order to know more about coffee culture that were ex-pected to create an architecture design used coffee culture as based. Besides, Ir. Izziah, M.Sc, Ph.D as a lecturer from Archi-tectural Department and Program Coordinator said that this kind of academic collaboration was interesting and it held for second time at Syiah Kuala University.

On March 6th, 2015, a group of students from Uni-versity of Tokyo, Japan, named Multilateral Interaction with Student (MIS) visited Master Program of Disaster Science, Syiah Kuala University. They were warmly welcomed by Dr. Ir. M. Dirhamsyah, MT, the Director of Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center. MIS is an organization of uni-versity students which aims to develop the sense of respon-sibility and leadership of the next generation. The purpose of their visiting was to build an academ-ic collaboration between MIS and HIBEUNA, a student orga-nization of Master Program of Disaster Science, to focused on disaster prevention particularly in education and em-powerment area. It is hoped that the students’ project col-laboration between MIS and HIBEUNA will be implemented in Unysiah at the next semester.

The continuing academic collaboration between Syiah Kuala University (Unsyiah) and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) on Transfer Credit Program under Consortium of Asia-Pasific Education

Universities (CAPEU), UUM has been sent eight of their students to study at Unsyiah. On behalf Unysiah, Department of Management of Economic Faculty welcomed UUM stu-dents and was warmly welcomed by Vice Dean for Academics Dr. Aliasuddin, SE, M.Si along with a number of Management Department staffs and Deputy Chairman of OIA Cut Afrianandra, SE.Ak, M.Bus (Acc) today on February 5, 2015. This progam was developed to enhance a standardized education and exposure study abroad experiences. Unlike the previous program, the students will be focused only at majoring of manage-ment program. The program will run for one semester.

Nishi Yoshimi, Ph.D. and Yam-amato Hiroyuki, Ph.D from

Center for Integrated Area Stud-ies, Kyoto University, met Dr. Iskandarsyah, SE, MM on March 6, 2015. The meeting took place in the Office of International Affairs, Syiah Kuala University. They dis-cussed to establish memorandum of understanding in the academic partnership between Kyoto Uni-versity and Syiah Kuala University. Kyoto University and Unsy-iah have an excellent partnership in the area of Agriculture, which is expected to be strengthened through more significant and beneficial partnership in academic fields.

In order to promote understanding between Asian and American Culture, Oberlin Shansi as an educational organization, encourages it through some

programs, such as individual and group educational and social, educational and cultural exchanges, and com-munity projects. This such of program, academic and cultural exchanges, has been established since 2006 be-tween Syiah Kuala University and Oberlin Shansi. With aim to strengthen this existing cooperation, Gavin Tritt as an Executive Director of Oberlin Shansi visited Syiah Kuala University on February 23, 2015. The purpose of this visiting was to meet Rector members of Syiah Kuala University. He was welcomed warmly by Vice Rector of Cooperations, Dr. Nazamud-din, SE, MA. The meeting was also attended by Dr. Us-man Kasim, M.Ed as the Head of Unsyiah Language Cen-ter, Ika Afriani Fata as the former Shansi Visiting Scholar, and Karl Orozco as the Oberlin Shansi Fellow. In this meeting, they discussed about the continuity and im-plementation of cooperation between these two univer-sities. Besides, he also came to the office of International Affairs to meet and greet Dr. Iskandarsyah, SE, MM, the Chairman of Office of International Affairs. This meeting has a purpose discussing more about considering cooperation at the future.

To improve the quality of education in global sphere, Un-syiah should be took a part in a number of international

academic activities. For that, Vice Rector for Cooperations Syiah Kuala University, Dr. Nazamuddin, SE, MA, and Dr. Iskandarsyah, SE, MM, Chairman of Office of Internation-al Affairs welcomed Dr. Matthew Durban as a Trade and Investment Commissioner from Australian Embassy Jakar-ta and his Education Manager, Ms. Aswinny Sudhiani on March 19, 2015. Austrade has an initiative of “Austrade Indonesia Education Outreach Program to support the development of Indonesian Human Resources”, particularly in Education and Training. Therefore Austrade and Unsyiah was dis-cussed more about academic partnership possibilities like research collaboration in specific areas. It is expected that the Outreach Program would be of interest and high rele-vance especially to Unsyiah academic staff.

Open Minded Is A Must!As a foreign student in Syiah Kuala University (Unsyiah), some of my friends are interested to know about me and my country. The more I am here the more I used to my friends asking about the culture. So I tried to be open minded as long as I am study in Unsyiah. Therefore my curiosity increased about the different culture that I want to learn.

Korean Drawing ClassDrawing is interesting. Many people like drawing in order

to show their creativity visually. But unfortunately drawing course or class is rarely found. However, Syiah Kuala University has ever held a drawing class for the first time which was run for about 2 weeks. The class was taught by Korean drawing artist, Mrs. Lee Jung Hee. She came to Syiah Kuala University with the purpose of being volunteer staff at Korean Cultural Center. Thus, she intended to hold a drawing class. The class was scheduled on Wednesday and Friday which took place at OIA (Office of International Affairs). The class, which attend-ed by 30 students of Engineering, Architecture and Econom-ic faculty, was begun by studying the basic skill of drawing. While teaching drawing, the teacher used the opportunity to talk in Indonesian with her students. She also spoke using Korean, which fortunately, there were students that capable to speak in Korean. Thus, they could practice the language in order to improve their lan-guage skill with the teacher as a Korean native speaker. In other words, the teacher and the students were both learning languages while drawing.The payment was not expensive at all, only IDR. 100.000 to be able to join the class. The facilities in the class included pencils, drawing papers, and also easel. Easel is a three-legged supporting tool to place the drawing paper.

Welcoming University Of Malaya StudentsThe relationship between two universities can be tight-

ened up by each universities visit or held charity pro-gram. University of Malaya has run this interesting project especially at Syiah Kuala University. Excitedly, on April 13, 2015 27 of students from Kolej Kediaman Ketujuh (Za’ba) University of Malaya arrived in Banda Aceh, accompanied by two lecturers Dr. Fathiah binti Mohamed Zuki and En-cik Mohd Julian bin Borhanuddin. Their arrival was wel-comed enthusiastically by Dr. Iskandarsyah Madjid, SE, MM, Chairman of OIA Unsyiah including OIA staffs and committee at OIA office. The purpose of this coming was to operate char-ity program namely Operasi Khidmat Masyarakat (OP-KIM) which planned to be held within April 14-17, 2015. The students intended to visit Nirmala Orphanage, one of orphanage which located in Banda Aceh. In this pro-gram, they also brought out Go Green activity like planted plants, that took place at the Peukan Bada Junior High School. In addition, they also went to the traditional food fabric at Aceh Besar, Lampuuk beach, and visited Tsunami Heritage. Lastly, the malaya students including OIA staffs closed these programs by celebrating farewell party at the Interational House. They run the program successully and hoped that this kind of relation will be sustained in the futute.
