In a world where, unfortunately, a book is still judged by its cover, fashion, however shallow and frivolous as it might seem sometimes, can be the surprising shoulder one needs to lean on.

A mood-changer and an empowerer, it has become a force to be reckoned with - a global strength for women. And fashionable muscle is just what the new era of haute sports is ushering in. Gone are the days when skinny was pretty, now strong and sculpted have stolen the spotlight as the new in vogue silhouettes. It seems the world has blurred the boundaries between fashion and exercise, and we’re not the only ones to have been bitten by the fitness bug -designers were right on our heels, quick to bust out slouchy draw string pants and racer back numbers faster than you can say “On

your marks, get set,…”So for our first body issue we decided to focus on a healthy, more stylish life, putting together simple solutions to achieve your goals: from one-stop beauty rituals to luxurious sportswear pieces that’ll

having you looking the part without breaking a sweat. In a region sadly known for its poor nutrition and high obesity rates, it’s refreshing to see a health revolution brimming in the kitchen. Ohlala! met up with the pioneers steering Qatar away from the all-you-can-eat (and drink) Friday brunch table to the wholesale market and yoga mat; it’s time to

forego punishing diets and instead treat the body and mind kindly. While our bodies go into detox lockdown, we show you how to sculpt a svelte summer shape with our A-Z Body Bible, and how easy it is to cheat your way around those pesky things called calories, with our guide to Doha ‘done healthy’. So what are you waiting for? Now is the time to laugh in the face of cellulite and wave goodbye to the toxic old you – it’s green smoothies, bootcamp and

wellness retreats from here, until summer!

‘Made to Order’ styles are also available and are part of a service that provides exclusive and maximum customisation, from the choice of the material and colour to the accessory finish.

Workmanship made up of slow, careful, encoded gestures that are the fruit of a typically Tuscan artisanal expertise, which won over Salvatore Ferragamo himself when he established his atelier in Florence.

From the paper pattern to cutting, sewing and assembly to finishing, details and customisation, all materials and work are strictly ‘Made in Italy’ and guarantee the added value of absolute quality.

Wearing a Salvatore Ferragamo bag means not only owning a unique accessory, but also keeping alive a fascinating, ancient craft that still survives to offer the greatest exclusivity available.

The midi-length frock from the brand’s Pre-Fall 2014 line, features an impressive slit on the side, which reveals Naomi’s slender and long legs. The four-time Oscar nominee wore Jimmy Choo shoes and accessorised her look with a black clutch and vintage gold, amethyst, emerald and diamond choker, both by Bvlgari.

wearing Christian Louboutin nude pumps and Anita Ko jewellery.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looks simply

gorgeous in this red-and-black zebra print number by Saint Laurent at the recent Brit Awards 2014, at the O2 Arena in London. Her ensemble features sculptural and gold padded

She does pretty “well”, and after dressing some of Hollywood’s favourites for their I-dos, her bridal wear range, which carries wedding dresses of little girls’ fantasies, has brides clamoring for the chance to wear one of her Chantilly lace numbers.Growing up in the Philippines, Monique began flirting with fashion from an early age; the love affair blos-somed even more thanks to her stun-ning and elegant mother, a Filipino society figure and former model of Spanish descent, whose personal style and elegance were major influences for the designer. After moving to Los Angeles to attend the Fashion Institute for Design and Merchandising, Lhuillier found love. Not only did she fall for and marry her future husband, Tom Bugbee, but she discovered her deep passion and infatuation for bridal and evening gowns as well. Her search for her own wedding gown in 1995 and the dif-ficulty she encountered catapulted her to create couture bridal gowns that transcended styles available to women in search of the perfect dress. A year later in 1996, Mo-nique debuted her first bridal collection to acclaim from retailers and magazine editors. Today she and Tom, who joined the company as CEO, have turned Monique’s vision of a couture design house into reality, creating one of the most successful brands internationally, which now includes a complete ready-to-wear collection in addition to the diffusion line, ML Evening, Bridesmaids and Bliss bridal collections. She has collaborated with Waterford on a tabletop collection including fine china, stemware, flatware and giftware. In 2008, Monique Lhuillier Fine Paper was launched, followed by a home fragrance col-lection in 2011. For Holiday 2012 Monique Lhuillier in-

troduced fine jewellery and in Spring 2013, she debuted couture footwear. Over the course of the last decade, her designs have graced the red carpet and wedding aisles of some of Hollywood’s elite. Fans include Reese Wither-spoon, Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively. With a passion for creating gowns that are both feminine and modern, Monique Lhuillier continues to design collections that are luxurious, chic and true to her aesthetic.

It’s no wonder that Qatar’s premium luxury retail chain Fifty One East decided to bring her signature designs to the capital. A representative of Fifty One East said: “We were delighted to welcome Monique Lhuillier to Doha and be the first to introduce her style to our discern-ing clientele in Qatar, only at Fifty One East. Monique boasts an enviable list of celebrity clients and the pres-

ence of her creations has become notable at many of the world’s high profile events. This is why the avail-ability of her models in Qatar has been highly anticipated.”For Spring Summer 2014, her col-lection features delicately balanced textures, innovative layering and so-phisticated ease. A rich colour palette includes coral, fuchsia and red pop against neutrals like cream, soft rose gold and nude. Evening gowns evoke ease and elegance. High low gown silhouettes are a new interpretation of traditional eveningwear.“I am so excited to visit Doha. I am intrigued by the glamour and beauti-ful culture of this city. The women

embody dramatic style and sophistication and I love the opportunity to dress them.”

Monique Lhuillier’s eveningwear, bridal and shoe collections are available exclusively at Fifty One East, Lagoona Mall.

Nicole van hattemThe art of

abundant Living

W e constantly hear about life changing moments that

have people dropping everything on a whim to go on soul-searching journeys of self-discovery. Most of the time it’s a heroine in a movie who takes the bold leap or a character in a novel who bravely goes where all of us dream, yet sadly, are too scared to go. To find and in reality meet someone who has actually jumped the boat is another thing. Enter Nicole van Hattem - living proof that you can actually have your cake, in this case a gluten and wheat free one, and eat it too. After 25 years of being a corporate junkie, thriving on long working hours, canteen food and an addiction to making more and more money, Nicole hit a speed bump which had her pull the breaks on life. “My marriage was falling apart, I was always moody, bloated and unable to sleep,” she says, “It reached a point to where I couldn’t even make the simplest of decisions; my entire being was overwhelmed.” A rash idea and plane ticket later she took off to a retreat in Thailand, where she got her first taste of fasting, juice cleansing and colonic irrigation; the seed was planted. “To say it was life changing sounds like ‘oh yeah I’ve heard that before’ but it really was.” She came back with vigor ready to take on the world, to have the rug pulled out from under her freshly detoxed feet when her boss and dear friend passed away. The shock propelled her back into her old bad habits but she pulled out: “Once you have stuck your head out of the window of awareness and know what’s out there, it’s hard to stay away.” Three years on and she’s teaching Doha how to think, eat and thrive – her newfound motto for life. “We are slowly, as a species, destroying ourselves. We need to stop and have a good hard honest look at how our systems work,” she insists, “Understand what you’re doing to your body, food is a tool not the point.” Nicole believes the start to a healthier version of oneself starts by getting real; cut out junk from your life, look at what you’re eating – did you pluck it from the ground; was it made by God or by man? “Feasting on fabulous fuel should be a celebration of life.” She suggests a daily shot of aloe vera, early morning lemon infused drink of water and a green smoothie a day to start one’s path to living well. For those like us who are starting their own journey she says “Get a coach, it’s a complicated scary road and you’ll need a cheerleader and bu** kicker along the way.” Well Nicole, interested?

attend her private by-appointment-only studio. “My students are committed and devoted to the method, when they leave here after practice it’s in so much harmony” says Lovern, “It has become a way of life for them, one where they learn more and more about anatomy, physiology and how we are all connected.” For those who come to her confused about whether Pilates or yoga is the path they should follow, she guides them from the shadows letting their minds and bodies decide for them, only one’s person can choose what practice is right for them she believes. These days see Lovern take on a bigger and more important issue that she plans on tackling one exhale and a time - “ We are not breathing,” she says, “Even though it’s the most important thing. Breathing is the first manifestation of life and the last that we do.” For those lucky to get a spot on her much sought after client list, we envy them for the wealth of care and expertise they obviously receive – this really is a studio for shaping both mind and body.

W hen it comes to pilates and yoga in Doha it isn’t about the

studios, it’s about the gurus—the posture-perfect instructors who train us to activate our cores, breath properly, and free our minds of the daily grind that leave our bodies intoxicated. In a town where 10-pound handbags and chronic desk hunch has left a crowd with troubled postural needs, finding an anatomy-obsessed professional who is dedicated to correcting such modern-day woes is not an easy feat. That’s why tucked away in the busy city hub of WestBay, is a studio whose resident guru has the capital’s corporate junkies and desperate housewives knocking at her door. Luz Alejandra Lovern, a self-taught fitness and Physiotherapist, has taken pilates and yoga disciplines and extracted the best from every angle, adding her own vision and expertise to create a slew of nuanced approaches. LuzLife was born out of a passion and respect for the classical movements, a love that spans over two decades long and addresses the body, mind and soul. “I came to Qatar in 2006 and worked in several different places until I decided to pursue up my goal as a Teacher,” Lovern says, “I wanted to create a healthy environment to promote Yoga as a way of life and Pilates as a foundation of our power house.” A practicing yogi for 35 years and a Pilates instructor for over 18, the Spanish native has become a mentor for those who

S he might look tiny but you know how the saying goes “Good things come in small packages.” Not only is the petite Australian

the founder of Doha’s premier yoga destination, Yama Yoga, but she also holds down the fort at VCU as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. She’s balances the two, one which she refers to as her job and the other her life long passion. “I came here to take a post at VCU, a single mother with two daughters, and Qatar looked after us” says Valerie. And after building a home for her family she decided to build one for those who shared her love for yoga; she took it upon herself to nourish the need of a community that was disconnected and looking for wellness and

support. So five years ago Jeremijenko launched a small yoga company with a partner and then after much contemplation decided to go solo - hence the birth and creation of Yama Yoga Studios. The employee by day and yoga instructor by night managed to create a stress-free and inviting environment where people could come together to become happier, healthier individuals through the regular practice of yoga. The studio has also coached and trained others to teach yoga. “They come, we teach them in the community and then they teach the community - we currently have over 30 trainers,” boasts Jeremijenko, “It ranges all the time as most of these people have families and jobs; they do it because it’s their passion.” This year will have marked the graduation of 150 individuals from their Teacher Training Program, an impressive feat for someone who is also currently writing her second book. With cult followings around the world and a slew of poster celebrities endorsing yoga as a means to get red carpet ready it definitely has put the practice in the spotlight. And although Jeremijenko does agree that Ashtanga yoga done six days a week will give an incredible body, she sees its principle in a different light. “The main purpose is to create peace and balance, it’s the mindfulness you bring to yourself and lifestyle,” she endorses, “The mat is the laboratory for your body.” She believes that one has to focus on a discipline, be it yoga or any other form of exercise, and practice it at least three times a week until slowly it grows and becomes part of one’s lifestyle. F lip over one of the many local magazines on your coffee table and you’re bound to see her face staring up at you behind pouted lips. Put your weights down

and take a look around your gym and you just might see her calling out instructions for someone to drop down and give her twenty. Yes Dunja Jankovic lives a double life, one where she’s all about glamour and head shots, the other she’s out there carving Doha’s perfect female bodies; this stunner is lethal whichever way you look. The Serbian native, who grew up in Qatar, is making it big on the local fitness scene with her new coaching lessons. “A few years ago I realised I wasn’t happy with my desk job in marketing, I couldn’t handle sitting in an office from nine to five everyday” the 25 year old says. She quit soon after and headed back home where she threw herself into fitness and sports courses. After a few years in Serbia she decided she had to return to pursue her dream here in capital. “The city gave me a great environment growing up, one where there were no cultural or religious barriers,” says Jankovic, ”I just had to come back and try my luck here.” So model]ling put on the back burner she focused all her energy on her true passion: fitness. A year later she can proudly show off the list of dedicated clientele who follow her every training whim. “Women come to me asking for the perfect body, and I try my best to tailor make a program to suit their body and health needs; not every woman is created equal.” She repeatedly stresses that although people are busy with work and family life, a minimum of 3 times

a week is needed just to keep one’s health up: “In Doha everyone drives everywhere, there’s no walking whatsoever. It means one should work out twice as hard just to stay in shape.” She credits three wholesome meals a day to her figure as well as the cutting out of pointless snacks and a weekly change up of her exercise routine. So how does this intelligent beauty stay inspired? Instagram she admits! “There are so many wonderful fitness and training accounts I follow – I’m constantly finding new ways to workout.” Guess those hours on social media aren’t hours wasted now?! Porsche style and power with truly green technology = guilt-free motoring!

To the untrained eye, the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid seems like any other Panamera S. It looks, behaves and drives like one. Inside, you have a gorgeous interior, four comfy seats, the

usual buttons like the Sport and Sport Plus modes, the suspension adjustment, and so on.

However, upon closer inspection, the telltale signs are there. First of all, you’ll see what looks like two fuel caps, but in fact one is for fuel, and

one is for plugging the car into the mains, if you so choose.

Then, the brake calipers in the corporate green of Porsche’s Emobility division. The same green also surrounds the ‘Panamera S’ emblem on the rear of the car, and the ‘e-hybrid’ signs on the side, and the needles on the instrument cluster are the same colour.

And on the cluster, you’ll notice a gauge you won’t find in normal cars – the battery power gauge, which ranges from ‘charging’, where

“When you leave the highway, you can switch to E-Power and cruise the suburbs on

electric, and feel at one with nature.”

The engine auto start/stop function shuts the engine down if you roll to a halt in traffic to save fuel and CO2 emissions, even if you’re still in drive. If, as is often the case, you have to roll forward a few feet, the electric motor will take care of that if you just take your foot off the brake. Then, when you need to move off, simply press your foot to the accelerator to have the engine start up again instantaneously, and off you go!

As you drive, you find charging the battery almost becomes a game. When you look at the power battery gauge, you can see when you brake that the needle goes down into the charging zone,

even if you only press the brakes softly. So, instead of hitting the brakes hard for short distances, you find yourself braking softly for longer distances, and literally watching the battery charge increase!

Then, when you leave the highway, you can switch to E-Power and cruise the suburbs on electric, and feel at one with nature.

you’ll see the needle when you’re braking and the energy recovery system is charging the battery, right up to ‘boost’, where the torque from the electric motors is giving the engine a boost in power when you plant the accelerator.

Then there are the E-Power and E-Charge buttons alongside the gear lever. The E-Charge buttons enables the car to charge whilst driving, and the E-Power button switches to electric mode.

The half hour it took to drive from Villaggio Mall to West Bay was enough to charge the battery half way, which is pretty impressive. That means that when I got to the traffic light at the Sports rounadbout I switched to E-Power with the push of a button, and drove through West Bay on fully electric mode.

It’s quite eerie cruising along with nothing but the subtle hum of the electric motors permeating the passenger cabin. I can certainly see the appeal though.

The electric motor also works in heavy traffic too.

VERONICA REJOICE CAASI

SOUS chef aT chOIceS reSTaUraNTKnown as “Mama Chef ” to her female counterparts,

this Filipina is a not only a force to be reckoned with on the kitchen floor but one the young female chefs at Oryx Rotana to turn to for guidance. “It is not about being the greatest chef but about trying to become someone who’s an inspiration, especially to all the lady chefs out there,”

she boasts proudly. A true believer in home-style cooking, Chef Caasi prepares her food with love, an ingredient she has relied on throughout her career. She keeps her kitchen free of bad produce and as a true promoter of

healthy eating advises, “to stay clear of preservatives and go for natural and fresh every single time.” Yet the petite woman can’t keep her finger off of French fries; a guilty

pleasure she indulges in once in a while.

POOJA SARMAcOmmIS III, paSTrY

“If I wasn’t working in pastry I would definitely be in the hot kitchen,” says Chef Sarma, “I love being in front of the oven, feeling

the heat when the food is getting cooked.” The Indian chef knows how to come up with more than just cake and sweets, she’s a big fan of any fresh product she can get her hands on. “For those looking to eat healthy, I would say go for fresh meat not frozen. If you can get your vegetables straight from the ground that would be awesome!” But as far as nutrition goes, when it comes to chocolate, especially dark, this chef succumbs to temptation, which is nice to see that

we’re not the only ones with a sweet tooth!

The Mumbai native exudes a passion for baking that is unmistakable on meeting her. “It’s not just cooking, there’s a science involved,” she’ll share with you, “You watch it evolve, from a simple batter to something

that comes to life - it’s simply amazing.” She tries to incorporate healthy-based ingredients into her pastries, like substituting rich butter to extra

virgin olive oil. Her newfound obsession with apples is charming, and she is slowly tapping into the various ways in which she can cook with this

Vitamin rich produce.

VIOLA MUTWOLcOmmIS III, cOLD KITcheN

A lover of vegetables thanks to a childhood filled with healthy habits promoted by a mother who used to, and still has a garden full of

vegetables, Chef Mutwol is a poster child for veggie lovers. “I love rocket! Its peppery taste is amazing and wonderfully surprising – you’d never expect that of a vegetable,” says the beautiful tall

Kenyan. When she’s not cooking she’s off on the beach just enjoying life, and maybe also treating herself to Chef Caasi’s guilty pleasure: French fries! “I love them! Especially when they’re homemade from

freshly peeled potatoes” says Mutwol.

MISS OHLALA!

ThE COLuMn

The first rule about dating a boy toy is you don’t fall in love with a boy toy. There are many benefits of dating a younger man, but just don’t take it too seriously because honey, he’s got nothing but time and you on the other hand are running out of it. Reality bites, you will rarely win this one.

I know what your thinking? It seems to be going just fine for the likes of Jlo and Madonna and the rest of cougar town, the phenomenon of dating younger men has been somewhat normalized. So if you were getting fed up about not meeting the right man, you are probably thinking, he isn’t even born yet!

So for the sake of distinction, this article is to discuss the relationship between the boy toy and the Cheetah (A) and not the Cougar (B), as the dynamics may not be the same.

(A) Cheetah is a woman in her late 20’s or 30’s dating a man 5-10 years her senior. She is looking for a life partner and still has not formed a family.

(B) Cougar is a woman in her 40’s or 50’s who has already been married, usually has children and is looking to have a good time.

Pros • He will be grateful. He will look at you with awe and be so happy you let him in to your life. He will be intimidated thus at his best manners all the time. • He will boost your self-esteem. He will look at you with desire and make you feel like all those age defying moisturizers are not, as your mother says, a waste of money. • He will make you feel smart. You are more experienced, better travelled and have been working for longer years. Therefore everything you say is golden and must be true. A toy boy will not argue with you because he will assume you are right - which (let’s face it) clearly you are! • He will make you feel rich – Your apartment is fully furnished, your walk in closet is rammed with designer clothes you never wear, you pay for OSN full package with all the channels (only because you have to get the whole package to get E!) and

you grocery shop at Megamart and Monoprix. Warning: he will never invite you over to his place and may never ever leave yours. • He will make you feel young again as you vicariously live through his stories, you find out about hip new venues and get exposed to fashions you probably would have never come across. And suddenly you know all the lyrics to the songs on the top 40’s.

Cons• He will rarely mingle with your friends. He can deal with one old foggy but a whole bunch of them may be too much for him to handle.• He will never pay for dinner. Okay you don’t want to be old fashioned but isn’t it hard to respect a man who disappears every time the bill comes to the table? • He will unintentionally make you feel old. Like the day after a heavy night of partying he gets out of bed, goes for a jog, makes it to work on time, then meets up with friends and starts all over again. He rings you to join for drinks and finds out that you still haven’t left your bed. Thankful for that OSN now huh!• He will leave you. Or maybe you will leave him. But it will end because you want different things. At the end of the day you are an experiment and he knows ultimately that when he is ready to settle down, he will choose a younger girl that makes him feel smart, rich, and manly.

Every rule may have an exception, but in general I would make sure to keep my feelings in check when enjoying the company of a boy toy. Keep it short and sweet, and move on before he does. Tata for now, until next time.
