Thanks to the support of Prevent Blindness volunteers, staff, donors and partner organizations for making it possible for thousands of Ohioans to “see into the future.” We are pleased to present you with the results of our sight saving programs that served 885,000 Ohioans of all ages and walks of life this past year.

Our focus has been on the future and addressing the half of vision loss that is preventable through early detection and treatment and use of protective eyewear at work, home and play. To meet these challenges, we completed a Strategic Plan entitled “Vision 2020” that details our goals for serving individuals at highest risk for vision problems – children under age 6, people with diabetes, ethnic groups prone to glaucoma, seniors and those without financial resources to get the eye care they need.

Prevent Blindness also co-sponsored a “first of its kind ever” report from the National Academy of Sciences that provides the evidence and strategies we must follow to curb the growth of vision loss in the next quarter century that is expected to double without intervention. The report emphasizes the critical need for community education that arms individuals with the facts and tools to take care of their precious gift of sight for a lifetime. The work of Prevent Blindness is more important than ever before!

We thank you for joining us in our fight to protect our eyes “into the future”. It is only through your continued support and participation that we will see a day that preventable vision loss is eliminated.

Sincerely,

Mike D’Ippolito Sherill K. WilliamsChair President & CEOBoard of Directors

Top vision researchers, clinicians, and public health professionals present-ed at the “Aging Eye Summit: Connecting the Dots” at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine on April 20, 2016. The goal was to involve diverse stakeholders in curbing the growth of vision loss due to aging eye diseases through public and professional education, early detection and treatment.

To be honest, as a parent, developmentally the piece that I was least committed to was the vision piece because it wasn’t as noticeable in a baby and at that age you’re focusing on babbling, crawling, talking and walking. I re-ally wasn’t understanding the importance of his vision. I thought of it as segmented and separate, Jayden’s vision was his vision. Yes, I wanted him to be able to see books and to see the world, but I wasn’t thinking about how inte-grated and critical vision was for his development and all these other milestones that we were working on with him.

But now after Jayden got his glasses, we understand that his vision has definitely played a critical role in hitting his milestones like learning to walk, jumping and dancing. His self-esteem has been impacted as well because he’s al-ways trying to keep up with other kids and his twin brother, in particular. I credit his glasses and more complete vision to the strides that Jayden has made. I can’t imagine how different and how much quieter of a person Jayden would be if he hadn’t had his eye glasses and our early interven-tion when he was first diagnosed at 15 months. I just didn’t realize how essential the early detection of vision problems was to the overall well-being of our son.

We noticed that he was pulling toys closer to his face a couple months before that. We knew he had a “lazy eye” or that it would turn inward sometimes but I had no idea that was indicative of a problem we should be doing something about.

Prevent Blindness, Ohio Affiliate Awards Research Fellowships

Prevent Blindness awarded Karen Wai, Cleveland Clinic Foun-dation-Cole Eye Institute, the PBO Young Investigator Student Fellowship Award for Female Scholars in Vision Research for summer 2015.

The incidence of vision impairment and vision loss increases as the population ages and with 12,000 Ohioans turning 60 every month, the number of people with impaired vision, including blindness, could sky-rocket. To curb this growth, preventive steps must be taken including increased education about vi-sion care, providing for increased vision research as well as access to care.

Prevent Blindness recognizes the generosity of our friends in optometry and ophthalmology and in the vision industry for donating products and services to the Vision Care Outreach Program -- our system of donated eye care for Ohio’s medically indigent that is one of the largest voluntary statewide “virtual free clinics” for eye care in the United States. In 2015, vision of 5,055 needy clients was saved through this comprehensive system of donated eye care, which in-clude eye exams, eye glasses, medications and surgeries.Donating Optical CompaniesAmerica’s BestEssilor of AmericaGeauga VisionOneSight SM – A Luxottica Group FoundationSelect OpticalToledo OpticalVisionworksVSP – Sight for StudentsVSP – Mobile EyesVSP Lab – Columbus
