ROAD TRIPPIN’Ohio State spent the first six weeks of the season on the road. The Buckeyes played 24 games away from Columbus, posting a 13-5 neutral site record and 2-4 away mark. During the stretch, the Buckeyes faced six opponents that played in last year’s NCAA Tournament, including defending national champion Florida State and runner-up Washington.

COMBINED NO-HITTERSkylar Hayward and Morgan Ray came together to fan 10 batters on their way to throwing a no-hitter in Ohio State’s 4-0 win over Army Feb. 22. Hayward lasted a ca-reer-high five innings while Ray pitched the final two frames. Both right-handed pitchers struck out five Black Knights, a career best for Hayward. It was the first no-no thrown by an OSU pitcher since Apr. 6, 2016.

COFFMAN MAKING B1G WAVES Rookie outfielder Kaitlyn Coffman earned her first weekly honor on Feb. 25 when she was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Coffman’s big weekend at the plate propelled Ohio State to four straight wins, including three shutouts, as she batted .538 with 10 RBI, seven hits, two home runs, two runs scored and a 1.077 slugging percent-age at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Among the tournament leaders, Coffman ranked in the top five in batting average, slugging percentage and total bases while leading the field in RBI.

BUCKEYES AT MNCCOhio State first attended the Mary Nut-ter Collegiate Classic in 2013 and has re-turned to the event in two-year increments. This year was the best showing yet as the Buckeyes went undefeated at the tourna-ment for the first time in program history. Out of 28 teams, only three were perfect on the weekend - Ohio State, UCLA and Wash-ington. Through four games, Ohio State al-lowed just one run in 28 innings.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORKOhio State had four players hit above .400 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic - Kaitlyn Coffman, Lilli Piper and Summer Constable. The trio combined for 17 of the Buckeyes’ 31 hits. The pitching staff com-bined for a 0.25 ERA, 28 strikeouts and 1.00 WHIP while giving up only one run.

TOUGH MATCHUPSOhio State has faced some tough com-petition in order to get ready for Big Ten action. The squad challenged defending national champion No. 1 Florida State and No. 8/7 LSU at the ESPN Elite Invitational. The Buckeyes took on national runner-up No. 6 Washington at the Husky Classic. During conference play, Ohio State swept No. 22/20 Indiana and took the series

finale from No. 21/18 Michigan.

OHIO STATE ADDS SIX FOR 2020 SEASON

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball program had six student-athletes sign National Letters of Intent to be part of the 2020 season.

Coach Schoenly on Cortelletti: “Tegan is a great table-setter for any offense. She is a triple-threat at the plate and causes chaos on the bases. In addition, she knows how to win. She has a competitive spirit that will impact our team.”

Sam Hackenbracht | C/INF | Massillon, Ohio | Massillon Washington High School

Two-time first team All-Ohio honoree…Garnered first team All-Stark County accolades every year…Broke the school record for home runs with 10 as a freshman…Snapped her own home run record as a junior with 14 dingers…Has spent her club ball career with the Ohio Emer-alds.

Coach Schoenly on Hackenbracht: “Sam is an elite power hitter. What will be exciting to see with Sam is where she will end up on the field on any given day. Although she’s a natural catcher, she has the athleticism to help us all over the field. Sam is a ballpark kid. She loves the game and it shows in how she plays every single day.”

Taylor Pack | C/INF | Lakewood, Calif. | Lakewood High

Three-time Offensive Player of the Year… Ranked 53rd on FloSoftball’s Hot 100 list for the Class of 2019…Team captain…Earned All-Moore League honors every season…Led the Lancers in RBI as a freshman and sophomore…Plays club ball for the Corona Angels…Helped the squad to a first-place finish in the Champions Cup…Angels were a runner-up at the PGF National Championship in 2016…Finished third at the Colorado IDT Tournament and PGF National Championship last year.

Coach Schoenly on Pack: “Taylor comes to the Buckeyes with a lot of championship play experience. Extremely versatile, we expect her to catch and play infield. Taylor has a nice blend of hitting for power but with a high average. She has a strong arm and a high softball IQ.”

Mariah Rodriguez | INF | Orange, Calif. | Orange Lutheran High School

Coach Schoenly on Rodriguez: “Mariah is a savvy infielder. She will be someone that can compete right away to play in the middle infield. She has speed, power and a superb infield skill set. She will create offense for us on the base paths as well.”

Hope Straight | P/1B | Mount Vernon, Ohio | Mount Vernon High School

Two-time OCC Player of the Year…Three-time Most Valuable Player…Ranked 100th on FloSoftball’s Hot 100 list for the Class of 2019…All-OCC selection every year, including a pair of first team nods…Picked up first team All-District and All-Ohio honorable mention accolades during her sophomore and junior seasons…Broke Mount Vernon’s single-season home run record and tied Ohio’s state record with 22 homers…Plays club ball for the Ohio Stingrays.

Coach Schoenly on Straight: “Hope is an extremely unique player, I’ll call her our “hybrid”. Not only does she hit for power, she is a left-handed pitcher and will play infield when she’s not pitching. Hope is a gritty player who has been a leader on multiple teams throughout her career.”

Emily Tinkham | INF | Shadow Hills, Calif. | La Canada High School

Garnered first team All-Rio Hondo recognition every year…Named Player of the Year as a freshman…Three-time All-Area selection…Tabbed as the Rio Hondo Most Valuable Player during her sophomore season… Ranked 89th on FloSoftball’s Hot 100 list for the Class of 2019…Plays club ball for the Explosion.

421 career victories. Eleven consecutive 30-win seasons. Thirty-four players who have earned a total of 54 all-conference honors. Seventeen NCAA Regional appearances as either a head coach, assistant coach or player. By any measure, Kelly Kovach Schoenly is a winner. And through seven seasons leading Ohio State, she has the Buckeyes positioned to write the next chapter in its storied history. In her first six seasons in Columbus, Schoenly’s teams won 199 games, including 13 over teams ranked in the Top 25. Sixteen of her players have earned All-Big Ten or NFCA All-Midwest Region honors. And just as important, the Buckeyes are excelling in the classroom. In 2014, five players garnered Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition, the most of any softball program in the conference. In 2018, the Buckeyes tallied 36 wins, the most in a season since 2010 and during Schoenly’s tenure. She had five Buckeyes earn All-Big Ten honors and four receive NFCA All-Region recognition. The Buckeyes had four players notch Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades for their academic excellence. For the third consecutive season, Ohio State secured an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and fought its way to the Gainesville Regional final. Against Top 75 teams, the Scarlet and Gray won 16 games while notching 22 victories against Top 100 foes. The 2017 season featured 35 wins. Schoenly coached the squad to a 15-8 mark in the Big Ten to finish third in the conference standings. The team also advanced to the Big Ten Championship game for the first time since 2007. The Buckeyes earned their second-straight trip to the Knoxville Regional. Schoenly spent six seasons as head coach at Miami

(Ohio) and was the program’s all-time winningest coach with 188 career victories, leading the RedHawks to their first MAC Tournament title in 2009 before winning again in 2012. Schoenly also led the team to two NCAA Tournament berths in both 2009 and 2012, respectively. Prior to her stint at Miami, Schoenly was an assistant coach at Penn State (1998-2006) for eight seasons and helped guide the Nittany Lions to seven Big Ten Tournament appearances and six NCAA Tournament berths. Before her time in State College, Schoenly was an assistant at her alma mater, Michigan, for three years (1996-98), helping the squad reach the NCAA Women’s College World Series three consecutive times. During her collegiate pitching career at Michigan (1991-95), Schoenly earned numerous conference and national awards, including 1995 NFCA First-Team All-America honors. A two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and three-time all-conference selection, Schoenly was a member of three Big Ten Conference Championship teams and played on the 1995 squad, which finished seventh at the NCAA Women’s College World Series. A two-time GTE Academic All-American, Schoenly received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Michigan in December of 1995. After receiving the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Schoenly went on to earn her master’s degree in elementary mathematics education from Michigan in May of 1998. Schoenly and her husband Doug, a Penn State alumnus and tennis professional, have one daughter, Danielle.
