The Obataimu peepshow caters to the needs of the modern gentle-man. Become a curator of forgotten old-world pleasures. Shopping is a modern day adventure if you have the constitution.

THEOBATAIMISTS

OBATAIMU is an experimental studio that practices bespoke design. We primarily dabble in multi-purpose clothing (clothing you can easily re-invent to suit your mood) and fusion furni-ture (combining ingredients and techniques from different periods and parts of the world). The team is made up of a strategist, a graphic artist, a word-smith, a specialist in ‘sleep-friendly’ textiles, a schizophrenic product designer, and a handful of good-old-fashioned artisans and tailors based in Mumbai. We are romantics, ridden with nostalgia for a pre-industrial age when possessions embodied a human narrative in their touch, feel and detailing; a time when style wasn’t a show of how to follow trends well, but rather a form of self-expression and liberation.‘Obataimu’ is a point in time where nostalgia meets futurism. A rejection of today’s monotonous factory-cut re-productions; a revival of tailor-made idiosyncrasies, bohemian self-indul-gence, and the raw unpredictability of peep-boxes…

We play with materiality (in its form or use) until we are able to tickle your senses. A few Examples:

1 – CLOUD COTTON: Do you have a t-shirt that you love so much that you have never been able to bring yourself to throw it away? Even after years and years when it is torn and tat-tered? We pre-bundle wash our ultra thin cotton over and over and over, so that it feels scrumptiously old although it looks deliciously new.

2 – LIQUID SILK: We take Indian satin silk, used for sarees and add a secret enzyme wash to it to make it fall with notice-able f luidity, while the color beautifully washes out in a hue.

3 – VAPORIZED-VISCOSE: We have come up with an unusual blend of lycra and modal with a viscose like sheen. We run the blend through a steam treatment to further soften it.

4 – IMITATION LINEN: Indian linen is not as light and airy as Italian linen although it looks rough and cool. We have created an imitation fabric in cotton that because of the way it is woven and the double tones in the thread looks exactly like Indian linen but is smooth and weightless, perfect for double layered clothing.

5 – AERO-MUL: We add a bio-wash to our superior Madras Mul-Mul, giving it a grainy organic feel, further thinning its naturally fine skin, making it light as air.

6 – FISH LEATHER: Fish leather, made in parts of Brazil and East Asia is beautiful and has the charm of Python or Croco-dile. It is difficult to make and is usually made from Tuna or Salmon. We tested 100 local Indian fish to find alternative scales that give a beautiful finish when tanned. Then we nar-rowed down our testing to just two local fish that are always eaten filleted. We started buying the waste and turning it into eco-leather.

7 – ORGANIC-PLASTIC: We take products such as spectacles, products that one always expects to see in plastic and we labo-riously hand craft them out of wood instead. Living frames for non-plastic people!

8 – FANCY-JUNK: We collect beautiful antiquated objects (such as brass telephones from the twenties, old buttermilk churners, trumpets that are out of tune, vintage tri-cycles, defunct 8mm video cameras, and more and turn them into shabby-chic chandeliers with a variety of custom-made brass chains and fittings. We also collect charming round type-writer keys from the modernist age and turn them into sterling silver initial-cuff links or word-necklaces.
