It’s Graduation Time! Did you know the youngest person ever to graduate from college was Michael Kearney? This bright young man proves that having a disability like ADHD shouldn’t hold you back if you’ve got the brains. At only four years old, Michael aced the John Hopkins diagnostic for a precocious math test, without having studied for it at all. Those math skills would pay off over the next few years, as he would graduate from high school at six. That same year, Kearney enrolled at the Santa Rosa Junior College, completing an associates degree in Geology at age 8 and going on to finish his bachelor’s degree by age 10, making him the world’s youngest university graduate. Kearney went on to get his master’s in Biochemistry and later taught classes at Vanderbilt University while he was working on a second master’s in Computer Science. Another bright young man is about to be added to the list of college graduates...My son! Four years ago, I wrote an article for the newsletter announcing that Alex was entering his freshman year at the University of Alabama. It honestly seems like yesterday! On May 6th, my family and I will watch Alex walk across the stage to receive his degree in Business Management. What a wonderful day it will be, but I can assure you that I will shed plenty of tears. Please be sure to come to Belmont on Mother’s Day to celebrate with a wonderful meal prepared by our incredible kitchen staff. Be prepared to come back to see Chef Vinny fire up the grill for a Memorial Day Cookout with all of the favorites. I wish everyone a magnificent May!

On Sound Footing- TheHealth of Your Feet
Your feet are pretty small, considering they have to supportthe entire height and weight ofyour body. But they can cause bigproblems.
“Feet don’t get any respect,”says Dr. Marian T. Hannan, whostudies foot disorders at theInstitute for Aging Research atHebrew SeniorLife. “They’re sortof the Rodney Dangerfield of thehuman body.”
If left untreated, foot problemsmay worsen. Eventually, the paincould interfere with your ability todo even the most basic things likewalking up stairs or down thestreet. If pain alters the way youwalk, it can lead to pain in yourknees, hips and back as well.
Several things can contribute tofoot pain or numbness. Going toofar, too fast or not warming upproperly before exercise can setyou up for painful or numbinginjuries.
Excess weight puts extra stresson your feet. Poorly fitting shoesare common causes of footproblems as well.
Health problems can also affectthe feet. Lack of feeling in yourfeet could be a sign of a seriousillness, such as diabetes or a nervedisorder.
“The good news is that mostfoot disorders are either treatableor modifiable,” Hannan says. “Thefirst thing that you can do is
notice and keep track of it to see ifthere’s a pattern to it.” Once youfigure out when you feel pain ornumbness, she explains, talk to anexpert who can help.
How you walk and move affectsyour feet. Part of that is inherited.“Not only do our feet look likeour parents’, but we also walk likeour parents,” Hannan says.
You can help keep your feethealthy by wearing comfortable,well-fitting shoes. Wash your feetregularly, wear clean socks and tryto rotate your shoes to give themtime to air out.
“The more you exercise yourfeet, the better the blood flow is tothe feet, and that’s important forgeneral foot health,” Hannan says.
Walking is a great way toexercise your feet. You can also tryspecific foot exercises. Sit downand rotate your ankles in onedirection, then the other. In barefeet, sit in a chair and curl yourtoes, then spread them out. Thishelps stretch and strengthen yourfeet to help you balance.
Seeing what someone’s footlooks like is incrediblyinformative, Hannan says. “I thinkwe’re going to be seeing a lotmore health care providers payingattention to the feet,” she predicts.

DISCOVERIESJELLY BEANS AND RONALD
REAGANLast month, both the COF and
the Neighborhood spent a dayhonoring jelly beans. While itseemed a little daunting to find aday’s worth of interesting jellybean facts, we did some diggingaround on the Internet and foundnot only the following articlefrom the Reagan Library Archives, but a quotable quote from theman himself about jelly beans anda man’s character! Hope youenjoy...
When Ronald Reagan ran forGovernor of California in 1966,he began eating “Goelitz MiniJelly Beans” as part of hissuccessful attempt to give up pipesmoking. Herman Goelitz CandyCompany, the Oakland-basedproducer of the jelly beans, sent amonthly shipment to theGovernor’s Office throughoutReagan’s two terms inSacramento. The company alsomade a custom-designed jellybean jar for Reagan.
After Reagan left thegovernorship, he continued toreceive shipments of Goelitz MiniGourmet Jelly Beans directly fromthe company. When HermanGoelitz introduced its Jelly Bellybrand of jelly beans in 1976, itbegan including the new brand inReagan’s regular shipment. Within
two years, the shipment consistedentirely of the Jelly Belly brand.
Three and a half tons of red, white, and blue Jelly Belly jellybeans were shipped toWashington, D.C. for the 1981Inaugural festivities. Blueberry, one of Jelly Belly brand’s mostpopular flavors, was developed in1980. Its blue color completed theother flag colored Jelly Belly jellybeans, the red (Very Cherry) andwhite (Coconut).
Herman Goelitz CandyCompany provided the ReaganWhite House with Jelly Belly jellybeans for all eight years ofReagan’s presidency (As president,Reagan placed a standing order of720 bags per month to bedistributed among the WhiteHouse, Capitol Hill and otherfederal buildings.). In February1981, Herman G. Rowland, thepresident of Herman Goelitz anda fourth-generation descendant ofthe company’s founders, receivedofficial Government authorizationto develop a Jelly Belly jelly beanjar with the Presidential Seal on it.These Presidential jars of JellyBelly beans, each in its own bluegift box, were given by Reagan toheads of state, diplomats, andmany other White House guests.
President Reagan’s favorite JellyBelly flavor was licorice.
“You can tell a lot about afella’s character by whether hepicks out all of one color or justgrabs a handful.” -Ronald Reagan
