’s New Collection is Intricately Beautiful and Eco-Friendly

H&M’s third exclusive conscious collection is simply stunning and is easy on the eyes – but more importantly, we’re the thrilled to be wearing it. The Swedish fast fashion mega-brand showcases ‘the breadth of possibilities with sustainable materials,’ without sacrificing the on-trend styles.

Designed in collaboration with sus-tainable fashion think tank Ever Manifesto, the new limited-edition line – made from high quality materials like organic leather from Sweden and mulberry tree-cultivated silk is loaded with details evoking flamen-co and bohemian vibes. A palette of nude, cream and navy keeps the collection fresh for spring, while the over-the-top embroi-dery and embellishment lend a global market feel. Pieces, like the girly pink silk bib

dress and floral navy midi-dress with ‘50s silhouette, are simply wonderful. The accessories have a touch of glamor with a matching set of detailed open-toed block heels and hand bag appearing far more fancier than the actual price tag. Super excited for what’s ahead for fashion-savvies and the exclusive conscious “At H&M, we have set ourselves the

challenge of ultimately making fashion sustainable and sustainability fashion-

able.”

and Dubai as well as his roots in Beirut are what spark his signature blend of Western and Middle Eastern elements in his designs. This classic blend of East and West is what is so exciting about globalization taking place today. People from all over the world can see different cultures and ethnicities intertwine through fashion.

In the East, things have evolved immensely. In places like Pakistan and India, fifteen years ago you would only see people wearing traditional clothes, clothes which spoke of their heritage and their roots. But now you see people wearing a mixture of Western and Eastern clothes. Which is a reflection of the world today, how people are evolving and feeling more comfortable to be able to experiment with their clothes. It is a social statement, where moulds and traditions are being broken in order for new ones to be made. Well known designers like Khaadi, Maria B, HSY and Èlan are all now making ready-to-wear Western clothing lines, for their Eastern market. This is because they see the change in society, and that it is now acceptable to wear trousers and a shirt instead of shalwa kameez and opt for a beautiful gown instead of a sari for a special event. Some people may feel that tradition in clothes and taking pride in ones culture is slipping away due to westernisation. However, being a person who has been brought up in a Western world but is very much in-touch with her Eastern roots, It is a beautiful change because you get the best of both worlds, and those worlds are not as far apart as they used to be.

Let us just realise how big of a change this is. For Islamic states to be allowed to have fashion weeks, to celebrate talented emerging designers is something that was not fathomable a few years ago. Places like Amman, Kuwait and Bahrain have been able to jump on the bandwagon and have their own fashion weeks, and soon enough we will be hearing even

more about their talents. That is what fashion is all about, no matter where in the world you come from, what background you have, what upbringing you have had, what clothes you traditionally have been brought up to wear, the boundaries and restrictions are slowly but surely being ripped off. In the future those lines and bridges are going to be so blurred, and we can already see it happening.

As inhabitants of the world, be prepared to indulge in other’s traditions, customs and fashion statements, because that is where the world is heading. It might be an extremely optimistic outlook on the future, but let us rather look to the future with bright eyes and hope. From what we have already seen in the fashion industry as a whole, from the East to the West, we are already unknowingly or knowingly interlinked. Sit back and enjoy the show! It is going to be a colourful one!

There is no secret that designers seek inspiration from all over the world, but how much inspiration comes from our side of the world? The Eastern world refers to Asia as a whole. From Hong Kong to Afghanistan and everything in-between. The Western world refers mainly to Europe. The Eastern world is a world that is growing every second, especially when it comes to fashion. Indian, Pakistani and Middle Eastern designers are on the up-rise. But the all-important question is, is there any space for Eastern designers on the catwalks of the fashion capitals of the world?

We may not take notice, but it is slowly happening, the bridge between the East and West is becoming smaller and smaller. Due to technological changes, everything is more accessible. If you live in London and want to see designs shown at India’s Fashion week, you can certainly do so. You can even live stream and pretend you are sitting front row, choosing your next show-stopping lenga! That is the beauty of this ever-changing world, places we thought we could never experience or see without setting foot onto their soil, are now at our fingertips. What is important to realise, is that this is not a one sided story. For many years, third world countries have been heavily influenced by the West, from their fashion to their food. That has been pointed out plenty of times, however, we are increasingly seeing the West being influenced and inspired by the East.

The well-known brand Hermès, proudly showcased a collection heavily influenced by the east for their Fall/Winter 2013 show. This collection was inspired by the Persian Tabriz rugs and carpets, and elegantly embodied the craftsmanship and intricate work that goes into making these Iranian masterpieces. This is a perfect example of how the East is being appreciated and used as a source of inspiration for many designers who are key players in the fashion industry. What is even more exciting and very telling about the future ahead, is that Eastern designers have a very influential and prominent stance in the Western fashion industry.

There are two Lebanese designers whose names are on the tongues of anyone who is important in the fashion industry: Zuhair Murad and Elie Saab. Both extremely talented designers in their own right. Both of them were brought up in Beirut and made their way to the West; and what a mark they have made there! They dress A list celebrities and have made a name for themselves through exquisite haute couture collections and jaw dropping, theatriclshows. The one thing both of these designers do not fail to make know is that their roots within the East have inspired many collections and have been the starting point of many of their ventures. Zuhair Murad has mentioned in countless interviews that Islamic art and Grecian architecture found in his hometown have been a heavy influence for his magical collections. And Elie Saab has said that his trips to Jeddah, Riyadh,

Have you ever stepped back and noticed how the fashion world is changing? How globalization and technological changes have enabled us to be influenced

and inspired by people and places miles away?
