Offside refers to the English term

for a team - SIDE - thus…

When a player is in “offside” position, they are “off their team”

and cannot participate in that play.

Elements of the Law

•Position•nearer to opponent’s goal line than the ball and•the second last opponent

•Unless •is in own half of the field•is even with second last opponent•is even with the last two opponents

•Timing•at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of their team

•Opinion of the referee involved in active play by:

• interfering with play• interfering with an opponent•gaining an advantage by being in that position

• corner kick

• or a throw-in

Mechanics

•Before raising the flag to indicate a player is off-side, be certain that the player is involved with active play by:

•Interfering with play, or•Interfering with an opponent, or•Gaining an advantage by being in an off-side position

•Only then signal to the referee when you are wholly satisfied that this is the case

• No offside for U-7 through U-10• For U-7 through U-10

• No planting (waiting for the ball) by offense or defense (except U-9/10 goalkeeper) in goal area• U-7/8 – includes corner kicks• U-9/10 – allowed on corner kicks

• Play can continue into goal area and goals can be scored from within goal area.
