Sea OatsThese tall, graceful, wheatlike plantsparade up and down the twelvemiles of Hilton Head’s AtlanticOcean beachways, changing incolor as the season advances froma deep green to a burnished gold. They may appear so beautiful as toinvite picking for a dry arrangement – but don’t. They are protected by lawbecause they protect our fragile dunes from erosion, and without their soil-holding ability, our dunes would all too soon disappear.

One of Hilton Head Island’s mostpopular residents, Atlantic Bottle-nose Dolphins are abundant in localwaters. In fact, these incrediblemarine mammals share so manycharacteristics with humans it can beargued they are our underwatercounterparts.

One example is the way they givebirth.

Female dolphins give live birth andnurse their young for up to threeyears. Male calves often stay withthe mother for up to five years andpotentially for the rest of their lives,if female.

In the wintertime, the Bottlenose popu-lation averages from 200 to 400animals. Early spring through latefall, we are inundated with dolphinsas females from all over the South-eastern coast make an annual trek tothe area to give birth. Other females

act as midwives and nannies, oftentaking turns watching over the youngas the mother feeds.

Males tag along, following thefemales wherever they go – yetanother human trait!

From a boat, you will often see theyoung calves swimming and play-ing with the other dolphins in thepod. Providing abundant food forthe mothers, Lowcountry watersalso give the young dolphins afairly safe environment to practiceswimming and hunting before mov-ing on to other parts of the coast.

Although they lack the gracefulnessof an adult dolphin, the calves’ play-fulness and energy tends to remindone of their own youth.

HILTON HEAD NATIONAL(843) 842-5900 / golfhiltonheadnational.com

From the moment the doors opened for business on November 1st, 1989,Hilton Head National quickly became a must play for annual visitors as well as local patrons. Golf experts and local residents alike continuallyrecognize the National with accolades on a yearly basis. 2013 was noexception. Hilton Head National was the recipient of Bluffton Today’s “Bestof Bluffton Award” for “Golf Course with Best Greens” as well as TripAdvisor’s“Certificate of Excellence,” given only to establishments that consistentlyachieve outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor. Plus, LINKS magazineranked Hilton Head National in the “Top 10 Courses of the Low Country”which included private courses.

Hilton Head National is indeed unusual in that two of the game’s mostheralded architects have collaborated to create this unique golf experience.Hall of Famer, Gary Player with over 200 golf designs in his internationalportfolio and Award Winning Bobby Weed, former PGA Tour designconsultant, have routed 18 holes through some of ”the most beautiful 300 acres of tree rich Carolina bottom land“ that they both have everencountered. With a combination of rolling greens, a variety of bunkercomplexes and generous fairways, Hilton Head National is a player friendly course but can also test the best players from the Black tees.

If you are a lover of the game of golf, you would remiss if you don’t listHilton Head National on your golf itinerary. Find out why locals continue to call it, “The Best of the Best.“
