Hello friends! Here I am again about to launch our Christmas Jigsaw edition-We’ve selected both old and new to give all our new members the chance to pick up those they may have missed-Some are quite limited so if you want them, but don’t want them yet….let me ‘Jig’ know and I’ll put them aside for you

The Jig is Upby one of our AMERICAN FRIENDS Patty Webdale A jigsaw puzzle is a lot like life. It makes you think out of the box, it comes in many pieces, and with concentration, determination and a little luck you can make a beautiful picture out of it. My passion for doing a jigsaw puzzle may be generic. I can see card tables of past generations set up in a living room covered with bits and pieces of cardboard. My grandmother was always building one and my dad had an attic filled with hundreds to choose from. I have daughters and grandkids who show promise as to harbouring the puzzle gene.

What is the great allure of jigsaw puzzling? Sitting and staring at puzzle pieces, sometimes for minutes and possibly for hours is much like meditation to me. My mind concentrates on the task at hand. It is escapism at its finest. As I shift pieces around answers on other matters come to me. I have developed my own style of working a puzzle. I try to do the edges first, forming a border but one puzzle stymied me and I had to first put together a brick building and build the sky and water and ships around it. The border came incrementally. This was the dazzling Ships Aglow, 1500 pieces of frustration, challenge and ultimate victory. I make room to work within the frame. I pile similar colors up in mounds so as to resemble poker chips. I have names for the pieces such as hats, angels and shovels and when it gets down to the nitty gritty I chose shapes. No longer a novice I carefully scrutinize a possible purchase for too much snow or not enough contrast

TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

RACHEL ARBUCKLE

I have to admit that I feel a sense of pride or boost of self esteem when I do a puzzle. That is how it works for me. On a tough day I might put together two to five pieces before I give up but on a good day I might hook huge sections together and when I do? Ha, I think I am clever. I feel proud of myself, such as I do when sewing a dress or making a great recipe. Sometimes my hand is psychic and I pick up a piece at random and know exactly where it goes.

A puzzle is a work of art, literally. At the height of the craze painters and illustrators were sought out to provide scenes for manufacturers. Artists were happy to get this kind of work during the Great Depression. By 1960 puzzle makers relied mostly on photographs, phasing out puzzle art. Chris McCann features 550 photos of puzzles in Master-Pieces, the Art History of Jigsaw Puzzles. Today the artist is in vogue again. My favorite puzzle artist is Nicky Bohme, the creator of most of the scenes that appeal to me. A scene has to be something that speaks to me personally. A favorite was a three foot long winter scene; showing kids playing in snow in the street and shop windows full of decorations. I noted a red convertible with a tree on the roof that was identical to a car we owned as a young family. I put the finished puzzle under glass on a desk. One day I noticed the title. It was Main St. of Stockbridge Massachusetts, painted by Norman Rockwell. I looked it up on MapQuest and went to visit my puzzle.

Old and historical puzzles can be found at online auctions. If you are looking for a leisurely interest you may want to try your hand at this hobby. It is not for everyone. When I asked my husband ‘what is the first thing you would do if you were doing this puzzle?’ he told me he would leave it in the box.

THE OFFICIAL UK PUZZLE CLUB
