D A N N Y H U N T E R
Tonight we welcome the Players, Directors
and Management team of FC Halifax Town FC.
A PROGRESSREPORT
Well the waiting is finally over, the preparation is now complete and two very good teams will go head to head, to see who progresses onto the next stage of these pandemic Play-Offs, where a trip to Harrogate Town awaits the victors.
For ourselves it’s been a very busy last 5 weeks since the National League, in early June, decided to schedule the Play-Offs in July to August, having watched their EFL counterparts do the exact same thing just a few days earlier.
Of course, for clubs of our size, that has meant us all working overtime in putting the band back together, as we had loan players who had gone back to their parent clubs, players out of contract on April 25th, and players who were not sure where their futures might lay?
So, I must thank all of the loanee clubs, the players themselves, all of our backroom staff and of course my gaffer Luke Garrard, my Chief Executive Charlie Hunter, and our Club Secretary Dell Ward, as they have to a man and women all been magnificent.
On another really positive note, as we continue to navigate our way through this pandemic, is that I am in a position to announce that we have employed two new, young and ambitious employees. One is our new media and communications manager Nicole Cox and the other is Tom Coggin, who will head up our new Astro facility hire set up and our onsite safety team.
It’s very important I feel, that we create almost a new club that is structured correctly, and that can only be done with
all the new safety aspects of whatever the ‘new normal’ looks like, firmly in our thoughts.
We must also accept and deal with the new bubble that young people will operate in. As such, I must be forward thinking and understand the ever-growing media demands put on this football club and our academy in respects to all things media and communications, so can I warmly welcome both Tom and Nicole to Boreham Wood FC.
Tonight though is all about winning, it will no doubt have its talking points and moments, but it will certainly not matter about performance and it will only be about the result. That is the case with any knockout cup competition and in cup honoured tradition, Halifax and their fantastic supporters will understand that as well.
We ourselves were in these winner take all games just two years ago, where we firstly dispatched a very good Fylde side 2-1 here at Meadow Park, then beat Sutton United at a scorching Gander Green Lane 3-2 in a tense semi-final, before losing to Tranmere Rovers 2-1 at Wembley.
Much of our squad and town will remember that day at Wembley and trust me the hurt of that defeat to Tranmere Rovers never goes away, and it is the sole reason why I have no worries that our changing room, manager and our supporters do understand the task in front of us.
Over recent years, both Boreham Wood FC and Halifax seem to have got to know each other quite well and, as such,
I expect this evening’s game to be very, very close and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if it went down to penalties.
As always in the Play-Offs, it’s no good worrying about yesterday, today or tomorrow, it’s simply to embrace the moment, enjoy the pressure, knowing to the victor the spoils, as both clubs strive for the right to meet Harrogate Town.
On another note, when you look at our magnificent pitch this evening, is it any wonder our ground staff at long last won the ‘groundsman of the year’ award last season?
As such, as this game is being shown live on BT Sport, it would be very wrong of me not to mention our groundsman extraordinaire Ben Howell and all the grounds’ team that produce this incredible pitch. I must also give a quick mention to Daniel Hunter, Jens Jankowiak, Loretta Browne and all the kit and maintenance team for getting the whole facility Covid safe and ready.
Our Covid Manager and Clinical Lead Megan Reid, alongside Ciara Dyer, Mandee Morris and their teams, have also been instrumental in ensuring everyone has been paid and their health and safety has been given the highest of priorities. Having now spent close to £13k already, just on our player’s coronavirus testing, that shows no expense or stone has been left unturned, as we put tonight’s game and its protocols to the top of our priorities.
Somebody asked me yesterday if I was optimistic about tonight? In truth I’m always optimistic with this group of staff and team. But I’m strangely also very, very relaxed about this evening’s result and this season’s Play-Offs as it was only four months ago that I didn’t know if we would even have a football club, let alone be competing in a Play-Off game, and trying for a place in the Football League.
In relative terms, though the game tonight is very important to me, to my staff, to the players, to our town and to our community, for me the important thing is the well-being of my staff, players and our club.
Why? Because football without two sets of supporters in a ground is not football as I know it in the purest sense but the fact is, and it’s very clear, that we are not anywhere near though this pandemic in the London area, and when I look at the scenes in the London pubs in recent weeks, the behaviour of some in truth scares me.
One person who doesn’t scare me though is our loyal supporter Mr Alan Swan, Alan has like many of our supporters gone beyond the call of duty in recent months to help and assist me and the club with his care, his kindness and his love for our small community football club. Though he will not like me saying it, he’s been an incredible ally during this pandemic and has my undying gratitude.
In terms of our Play-Off squad I couldn’t be happier, and it couldn’t under the guidance given to us by the National League, be any stronger and let me tell you, it is as balanced a squad as any we’ve ever had here at Meadow Park.
In fact I genuinely believe if this squad had been in place back last August, then this game this evening would not be taking place and perhaps Barrow might have been in these Play-Offs?
Though we now sit in mid-July, and in normal circumstances it’s where everyone’s pre-season is cranking up, tonight will be where one team’s season will come to an abrupt end. But nothing in the sporting arena in terms of two teams competing against each other has changed so I say “to the victor the spoils” and good luck to whoever marches onto Harrogate Town with hope in their hearts.
If it’s not to be my beloved Boreham Wood FC then so be it, we will wipe our mouths, we will look after our players and staff, and we will go again next season. We will wish our good friends at Halifax all the luck in the world in the semi-final.
Finally whoever you support this evening, let’s hope for an open, attacking game and may the best team win.
Take care stay safe. Danny

THE VIEW FROM BROOK ROADCAR PARK ENTRANCE
PROPOSED NEW DEVELOPMENT ON THE SOUTH END OF MEADOW PARKDespite still being in it’s early stages, the Club is excited to announce to it’s fans and the local Community our proposed new plans for the development at the south end of our Meadow Park home, as we work closely with the local authority Hertsmere Borough Council to put a strategy in place should the Club fulfill it’s dreams of reaching the Football League. This development will include our new ‘Clock End’ which will mirror the North Bank that was built in the summer of 2019, as well as a new purpose built Academy building to house our ever growing sports and education scheme that is the number one of it’s kind in the United Kingdom.

MANAGERSNOTES
L U K E G A R R A R D
Pete in my opinion has done an amazing job, Halifax have been very consistent throughout the season and maintained their top 7 place for large periods.
Prior to the season’s curtailment, they were on a slightly poor run of form with only one win from five but that doesn’t mean a thing when it comes to this evening’s fixture.
Halifax come to Meadow Park possessing very good quality throughout their squad, with superb attacking minded players in the likes of Cameron King, Jack Redshaw and Jamie Allen to name just a few. They play a very similar shape to ourselves and we need to ensure we get to grips with their threats as quickly as possible.
For ourselves it’s about hitting the ground running. Prior to the League’s abrupt conclusion in our last 15 fixtures we had gained 30 points, in our last ten we had gained 19 points, in our last six we had gained 11 points, whilst losing just a single game in our last 19 in League competition…
We know we were in good form prior to the pandemic outbreak, but we are very aware that means absolutely nothing when it comes to a play-off quarter final. There are no rehearsals and we need to ensure we are right on job!
In truth, I must say it has felt extremely foreign organising for this fixture, but the application of the group has been first class. They have worked ever so hard and are in great shape, but preparation as I’m sure you will all understand has had its hurdles.
The Chairman and Club have been fantastic throughout this whole period, when the Country went into lockdown, the Chairman was extremely proactive in ensuring all staff and players were looked after.
Without the Chairman’s support and backing, it would have not allowed us to resign our squad and I’m hopeful we can repay that kindness with a successful run in these play-offs.
As with most play-off encounters, tonight’s match will be edgy, because we all know what’s up for grabs. But I need a dressing room that is calm and collected and we have great experience in that group to help with that, players who have been in this position many times before.
Whether they have had promotions or play-off campaigns with this Club or others, or even in some cases suffered the hurt we all went through two years ago at Wembley. However, I am a huge believer that pain shapes you as a person and I’m more determined now to right some wrongs, and ensure we do not let this opportunity pass us by.
I’m gutted the fans can’t be with us on this journey, it would have been amazing walking out at a packed Meadow Park and giving you all something to cheer about.
We know what we have to do, and I honestly believe in this group. They are a very close and extremely talented group, and I hope we can all give you something to really get excited about.
Let’s hope for a win, enjoy the game!
Regards,Luke

Boreham Wood FC’s bar will finally
open its doors to the general public
and our supporters this Saturday
July 18th for the very first time
since lockdown.
The Club has endured an incredibly
difficult time during lockdown, but
has created a COVID approved
site, complete with a new one-way
system, which runs from the Club’s
car park into the ‘Gallery Suite’ and
from the new bar corridor into the
Stadium itself.
Our Safety Officer and staff have
set the stadium up to include
staffed toilets, a Stadium one-
way system and we estimate that
the ground can now comfortably
cater for 300 people to share a
drink while still keeping socially
distant and compliant with the new
government guidelines at all times.
Win, lose or draw against FC Halifax
Town on Friday, the Club are hoping
that come Saturday, many of our
fans will pop into the Club to enjoy
a catch up, discuss the play offs or
next season, enjoy a drink and the
magnificent pitch views.
The weather is going to be great,
the Stadium music is going to be on
with ‘Hughsie’ on the mic. We are
hoping this will announce to us all
that our Club, our supporters and
our community are finally BACK
TOGETHER AGAIN for the very first
time since way back in March…
WE LOOK FORWARD TO
WELCOMING ALL OUR FANS,
FAMILY FRIENDS TO MEADOW
PARK BETWEEN 12-4PM.
Boreham Wood FC are delighted to announce that we have recently received correspondence from the FA recognising the Club for the work we have done throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. A representative from the FA reached out to the Club earlier this week in regard to interaction and health and wellbeing content created for the Community and our Academy players, and that the Club has been identified and highlighted by representatives within the Houses of Parliament as an example of best practice of remote content being produced for members of our Community to assist in remaining fit and healthy. A snippet of their correspondence read, “I wanted to get in touch in regard to the fantastic work that has been carried out by Boreham Wood FC to support the community response against COVID-19. “In these unprecedented times, it’s been so encouraging to see Boreham Wood come together to champion the grassroots football spirit by offering online skills and workout sessions to keep fans’ spirits and fitness levels up during the lockdown. “In recognition of your attitude, we have highlighted your work to the local Member of Parliament for Hertsmere, Oliver Dowden MP, to demonstrate the
far-reaching value of grassroots football, both on and off the pitch.” Boreham Wood FC Chief Executive Charlie Hunter commented, “It feels fantastic to hear such positive feedback and know that the work we have been doing throughout lockdown has been so well received. “During these difficult times, we felt that we had a social responsibility to our town and our community, to do as much as possible to support those in need. Of course, it is wonderful to get recognition, but in truth that’s not why we have done what we have during this period, it’s an even better feeling knowing we are helping those in need and providing content in order to help our community remain fit and healthy, when health is of upmost importance.” Hunter concluded. First Team Manager Luke Garrard commented, “The work the Club and staff have done throughout this period has been fantastic. We felt we needed to engage with the Community and Academy to ensure they didn’t feel isolated. We have looked at this process and felt it was so productive and fulfilling, that we will be continuing this practice moving forward as a Club even after lockdown and we begin to return to some semblance of normal life.”

OLLIE BAYLISS PRESENTSTHE NON-LEAGUE SHOW
It’s been a long 124 days since non-league football was last played in England. This evening, albeit in an unfamiliar and sterile atmosphere, the game we love is back!
The coronavirus pandemic brought with it the biggest disruption to sport in this country since the outbreak of the Second World War. The situation posed an almost unsolvable conundrum for football administrators; how to conclude the season without any certainty of football returning. There was never a right answer to this riddle; the best they could hope for was to find the least incorrect one.
As we know, the Premier League and the Championship, with their millions of pounds, gradually worked towards a costly return of all fixtures behind closed doors. At the foot of the pyramid, non-league steps 3-7 were quickly made null & void. A clinical decision to ‘expunge’ all results and discard the 2019/20 season. The National League chose to step away from this decision and wait, to try and align with the League’s One & Two.
After a lengthy process, this meant deciding the Leagues using a ‘points per game’ formula and to undertake the monumental task of holding play-offs. Many believed it wouldn’t be possible. Certainly, at times the idea of holding non-league playoffs seemed impossible. The fact that every one of the 18 teams has found a way to participate, is something that the clubs deserve immense credit for. To bring themselves out of hibernation and to conform to the mountain of guidelines and protocols has been a monumental task. Whatever the
results on the pitch, the clubs deserve praise for simply getting these games on.
The financial cost of playing these fixtures has been gigantic. What’s been heartening to see is the extent to which fans have been willing to put their hands in their pockets to help out their local clubs. National League North side Chester has raised over £110,000 from fan donations alone. This evening’s visitors, Halifax Town, collected £50,000 from contributions to their ‘project playoff’ fund.
In a quirk of this unique season, this will be Halifax Town’s first visit of the campaign to Meadow Park. Football was suspended on Monday 16th March, the day before the Shaymen were due to make the trip. In their only meeting so far this season, The Wood were the victors up at the Shay Stadium. Back in September, goals from Tom Champion and Adam McDonnell saw Boreham Wood beat early league leaders Halifax 2-0.
There’s plenty of history and connection between these two sides. In 2008, one of the knock-on effects of Halifax Town folding was a reprieve for Boreham Wood in the Isthmian League. If you consider the status of the two clubs then, it’s remarkable that both are now fighting for a place in the Football League. The newly founded FC Halifax Town have bounced up the divisions, celebrating four promotions in their short history. Boreham Wood themselves achieved remarkable growth over the last two decades too. If either of these sides can claim a place in League Two – it’ll be a truly fantastic story!
Following the demise of Halifax Town AFC at the end of the 2007-2008 season, a new Club was born and re-formed just in time for the 2008-2009 season. The new Football Club was placed in Level Four of the Non-League pyramid, taking a place in the Northern Premier League, in Unibond North One and called FC Halifax Town.
Time was short and the new Club was faced with appointing a new Manager and bringing a team together from scratch in only five weeks. Jim Vince, a coach in the Crewe Alexandra Football Academy working closely with Crewe Manager Dario Grady and a former Manager of Witton Albion in the Unibond Premier Division, achieving two consecutive second places in the previous two seasons, was appointed. Pre –season friendlies were hastily arranged and the first ever game by the Club was played at Tamworth, when 22 trialists made appearances for the Club, trying to catch the eye of the new Manager. The first ever official game for FC Halifax Town was a home game against Bamber Bridge at the Shay Stadium. For the Halifax fans, it was an emotionally charged game; as they were so relieved to see their beloved ‘Shaymen’ play a real game of football again, after all the heartache of previous. Over 1,500 fans attended the game, watching a team that barely knew one another. Jim Vince struggled to get things going with any real conviction on the pitch, culminating in a far from satisfactory 8th place, even missing out on a Play-Off place. A new Club and striving for stability and continuity, reluctantly the Board had to make a change, with Jim Vince leaving the position prior to the end of the season and player, Nigel Jemson taking the club though to the end of the season. Players who have gone on to play at a higher level include from that season include,
A step up to the newly sponsored EvoStik Premier division. With some more astute signings and the average age of the team being reduced, Halifax tried to emulate the previous season. Again, the Club achieved promotion and the Championship, with five games to spare, missing the 100 points by just two and again scoring over 100 goals. As in the previous season, the Club just missed out on the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup, losing to Wrexham in 2009-10 to a 97th pile-driver and 2010-11, to a 1 nil defeat against Mansfield Town.
So, 2011-2012 saw the arrival in the Football Conference and the Blue Square Bet North division. Another tough challenge, made all the harder with the departure of star striker Jamie Vardy, after only four games of the new season. Jamie making a move to then Conference Premier, Fleetwood Town and soon to be Champions, making their way in to the Football League for the first time in their history. Jamie shortly made a second move to Championship Club, Leicester City becoming the first £1m non-league player. Despite that set-back on the pitch, the Shaymen battled their way to a play-off position, to meet Gainsborough Trinity. The season was also highlighted by finally achieving the FA Cup First Round Proper and what a draw. League One leaders Charlton Athletic who were to go up as Champions and the game also being chosen for national live TV broadcast.
Understanding the league a little more, Neil Aspin brought in one or two fresh faces for the 2012-2013 campaign and said ‘goodbye’ to some good players, who had helped the Club progress so much. This season in particular was the hardest for the Club since reformation, only due to the number of match cancellations, both home and away for a variety of reasons, but mainly the incredible amount of rain. The fixture backlog and numerous re-arrangements took their toll and Halifax would have to do well, playing so many games a week to secure a play-off spot. This they did in fifth place and faced a local derby against Guiseley in the semis, who were in the play-offs for the third consecutive season. Chester FC had walked away with the Championship. So to the Final and a long trip to Brackley, who in their first season has done tremendously well and it was going to be a difficult tie. A great achievement in five years with three promotions.
The following season FC Halifax Town finished 5th in the Skrill Premier and the play-offs beckoned again, this time with the chance of a Wembley final and promotion to the Football League. However despite a 1-0 home win over Cambridge United at the Shay, a 2-0 defeat at the Abbey Stadium saw Cambridge head to Wembley.
Last season, Town had a great start to the season and got to the quarter finals of the FA Trophy. However after defeat to Wrexham in the quarter finals, the season petered out and Town finished in mid table.
Neil Aspin promised a number of changes over the summer, which he has duly promised. However, just a few games into the season, Aspin departed the Club having been in charge for over 300 games. Aspin’s departure would kickstart the managerial merry-go-round that was to come in the next few years.
Gareth McClelland, Darren Kelly and Jim Harvey all had spells in charge during the 2015/16 season. The season was to be one of mixed emotions as Town were relegated from the National League. A terrible start to the season was then met by a revival under Harvey but the damage was already done.
Despite the relegation, The Shaymen made it to Wembley for the first time in their history. FC Halifax Town beat Nantwich Town 6-4 on aggregate to reach the final of the FA Trophy.
The 2016/17 season saw another manager in charge as Billy Heath took over the coaching duties and was able to guide Town straight back to the National League. Town had finished 3rd in the National League North and were promoted after winning the playoff final against Chorley.
In the 2018/19 season, Town had one of the highest clean sheet records but struggled for goals and finished in mid table. However Jamie Fullarton decided to leave the Club in mid July and former Oldham boss Pete Wild is tasked with taking charge for the 2019/20 season

Boreham Wood FC would like to send a very special thank you to our many
loyal sponsors who, despite the turbulent times we are all facing, are continuing
with their sponsorship next season. So, it is with gratitude, respect and our
heartfelt thanks that we acknowledge Barnet & Southgate College, Hertsmere
Borough Council, Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council, Arsenal FC, Reggiani,
GBE Installations, Harrington’s Car Sales, Barkers Estate Agents, EMS, Village
Hotels, Greene King and Davis Bonley.
Without the support of these local institutions and companies, we certainly
would not have been able to make the progress we have both on and off the
park in recent years. So, we say a big thank you, as we really are so grateful for
both your support and friendships, as it means so much to us.
Over the next month or so, we will be writing an article on each of our loyal
sponsors explaining what they do, where they reside and why they genuinely
have our thanks, so keep an eye out for future postings!
