The South Front project started with the transformation of a vacant and dilapi-dated public housing project, Nesbitt Courts, into a successful 216 unit multi-family venture. This was followed with the conversion of the old Block Shirt Factory located at 1510 S. 3rd to an additional 54 unit urban loft-style apartments. Since opening the vacancy rate has been less the 2%.

The first commercial tenant Chef Vivian Howard and Ben Knight, the couple who own Chef & the Farmer in Kinston and star in the PBS show A Chef’s Life, now occupies a 3,700-square-foot portion of the Block Shirt Factory property at 206 Greenfield St. Love Lydia, owned by Lydia Clopton, pastry chef at Pinpoint Restaurant, opened recently after the extensive renovation of an historic bungalow located at the corner or Greenfield and 3rd.

With the purchase of the Capps Industrial property between Front and 2nd Street, the expan-sion of the commercial aspect of the South Front project accelerated to a new level. The 18,000-square-foot building where Capps Industrial Supply was located will now house New An-them Brewery leaving 3,000sf of the building to be occupied by another chef driven restaurant. The empty lot located along 2nd St. was perfectly suited for a uniquely designed building, now known as the Container Building. The 14,173sf building was designed to incorporate features paying homage to the industrial ports district the project is located in.

New tenants in the Container Building include The Second Glass, owned by Celeste Glass past owner of Fortunate Glass located on Front St., Yoga Salt owned by nationally renowned yoga instructor Tamal Dodge who relocated to this market from Los Angeles. Additional tenants in-clude an optical center, juice bar, salt cave and hair/makeup salon.
