Project Overview

• Objective: To design and implement a portable device that will enable students who are visually impaired to navigate around campus with the use of the global positioning system.

• Solution: Program – “PUGuide”

– Integrates GPS receiver and PDA to help user navigate around campus using voice output.

Integer-to-speech function

• Function was created to convert integer values to voice output

• Allows simple speech of any number

• Used in many areas throughout program– Confirmation of user button presses– Speaking calculated distance from next node

and destination

Distance in Feet

• Tells user how far she is from destination/next node on button press

• Accounts for curvature of the Earth– Important as campus

coverage expands

• Allows user to choose their own path if familiar with campus

Path Recalculation

• Allows user flexibility if obstruction exists in calculated path

• Strongly desired by project partner

• Allows for simple implementation of automatic/manual path recalculation

• Could not be completed because of certification requirements

• User testing will improve overall product functionality and provide first-hand feedback

• We are currently in the production phase

- Software is optimized, kiosk needs minor modification, delivery imminent

• Project costs: $50– 802.11b USB adapter for kiosk computer

Kiosk Alterations

• Installation of 2 brackets– One on the bottom to hold the monitor at the

correct level– One at the top of the monitor to secure it in

place– Screw holes already in place– No physical alterations to outside of kiosk

Node Database Software

• Facilitate the creation of a node database with a simple and easy to use GUI

• Can be used for GPS-DVI and other applications

• Will utilize Qt and Qt Designer

Design Parameters

• Cost less than $500

• Requires very little muscle force by user

• Hold at least 8 – 10 books

• Makes use of current dorm shelving unit

• All books are attainable from a seated position
