HOW DOES ADD/DROP WORK?• Add/Drop period:

• Tuesday, September 6th through Monday, September 19th.

• Attend ALL classes you may be interested in taking; you are responsible for ALL assignments and readings during Add/Drop.

• You must attend the first class meeting for all seminars -- and sign the attendance sheet -- due to enrollment limits.

• Add/Drop forms are available at OGIP

• Permission to add a course is granted on a space available basis and Dean Riccardi must approve of all course selection changes.

• Make all final changes to your schedule by Monday, September 19th.

AUDITING

• You attend each class but do not take exams or receive grades.

• Classes may be audited either formally or informally– Formally: class will appear on your transcript as AUD (audit). – Informally: class will not appear on your transcript.

• All audited credits count towards the 18 credit/semester limit.

• Audited credits do NOT count toward the 24 credits required for the LL.M. degree.

• Both formal & informal audits require the professor’s consent. If you want to audit a course, ask him or her to sign the Audit form.

CROSS REGISTRATION• LL.M. and Exchange Students may take classes at Boston

University outside the School of Law.

• Class must be level 500 or above to receive law credit

• Credit towards the LL.M. degree is limited to – 3 credits per course– 1 course per semester, unless otherwise permitted by the Director– Up to 6 credits for the entire year

• Grades received for non-LAW classes are recorded on the student's transcript but are not included in the student's average

CROSS REGISTRATION

• To register for a course outside the law school:– Obtain the “Cross Registration Form,” which is available

at the OGIP or online at the University Registrar’s website.

– Meet with Dean Riccardi and ask him to sign the form.– Take the form to the University Registrar’s Office (881

Commonwealth Ave) for a signature– Take the form to the Registrar’s Office at the school

where you want to enroll (host school) for a signature– Submit copies of the signed form to the BU Registrar

and the host school– Follow any school-specific steps (contact Jenna or Erin

for details)

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSESImportant Tips:

Physical Education courses count towards the 18 credit limit (per semester).

All physical education courses should be audited, not taken for credit.

BAR EXAM INFORMATION• Each of the 50 states has its own criteria and

procedures for admitting lawyers to practice

• Graduates of foreign law schools are often eligible for the following bar exams: – California– Washington D.C.– Massachusetts– New York

• Because requirements frequently change, seek information from the board of bar examiners of the state in which you wish to take the exam.

NY BAR EXAM

• Must request an evaluation of eligibility to take the Bar Exam

• To do so, complete the online foreign evaluation form (http://www.nybarexam.org/Foreign/ForeignLegalEducationhtm) and submit the supporting documentation specified

• Timing: for the July 2012 exam, the Board of Law Examiners instructs applicants to submit the request on or before April 2011

• MPRE- must pass to be admitted to Bar but don’t need to take it before the bar exam. Test Dates: Nov. 5, 2011; March 17, 2012, August 10, 2012.

MA BAR EXAM• To be eligible, must be admitted to the Bar in foreign

country

• Different LL.M. course requirements for graduates of law schools with common-law and civil-law traditions– Common Law: Need 15 credit hours in specified

subject categories; must take Con Law, Prof Responsibility

– Civil Law: Need Con Law, Prof Responsibility and at least 1 course from 3 other specified subject categories

• Must request an evaluation of eligibility to take the Bar Exam– Timing: requests must be made at least 4 months prior to applying to

sit for the MA Bar Exam. For the July 2011 exam, applications were due by May 5th
