difficult. Ema Mei will be teaching simple and easy to learn
conversational and written Mandarin in the familiar Latin alphabet

over 730 million people and is arguably the current most important

U.3.A. NEWS
Secretary, Jean and Treasurer, Pat represented our U3A at this
year's U3A Network NSW's Annual State Conference and A.G.M. hosted
by Eastlakes U3A and held at the Belmont 16' Sailing Club. This
year's conference co-incided with the Network's 25th Anniversary
and was extra 'special'There were three excellent keynote speakers
as well as 8 workshops and Jean and Pat attended 2 different ones
each, a total of 4 which gave us some great ideas to bring back for
new classes for our U3A. During a lull in proceedings we were
entertained by a group of Eastlake's Middle Eastern Dancing class
with their graceful dancing and beautiful costumes. The conference
dinner gave our delegates an opportunity to 'network' with some of
the 177 delegates representing 43 U3As state- wide. It was a
delight to listen to the 20 strong Barbershop Choir -a male a
cappella
group from the Newcastle area. The A.G.M. which followed the next
day saw some changes on the Network's Committee and a book The
Brief History of the U3A Network NSW Inc. 1991 – 1016 prepared by
Dr Ronald Browne AM was launched by him and a copy presented to
each Network member U3A, including ours. A session followed with
three of U3As 'living treasures' Mel Davies, Cecily Butcher and Ern
Hollebone recalling some of the Network's highlights of the past 25
years. At the conclusion of the A.G.M. Jean and Pat spent a great
afternoon at the home and studio (now a museum) at Wangi Wangi of
one of Australia's most loved artists, Sir William Dobell. From
start to finish the conference would have to be one of the best
ones held so far and Eastlakes are to be congratulated for their
great organisation.Next year's conference will be hosted by Sydney
U3A at the Sydney Town Hall, June 28 – 30, 2017
