Well done on a great term’s learning, team! THANKYOU

Families and friends Students
Fairhills PS is a better place because of our teamwork and focus
on learning.
Safety Being around traffic and roads needs care and attention –
it is holiday time so…………
PARENTS 1. Remind your children about the road rules and safety
2. Make sure children understand that some drivers may not be aware
that school
holidays have started so may not be extra cautious and thinking
about kids near roads
CHILDREN 1. Use the STOP! LOOK! LISTEN! THINK! road crossing
process 2. Understand that on wet days vehicles can take longer to
stop and drivers will
find it harder to see pedestrians crossing the road SAFETY
STARTS WITH ALL OF US!
During the holidays…….. Kids still need · a regular sleep
pattern · the right amount of time in bed · all distracting
electronic equipment (including TVs) to be left OUTSIDE the
bedroom · a quiet, dark comfortable bedroom that isn’t too hot
or too cold · down time – reading a book and listening to relaxing
gentle music helps.
Enjoy a well-deserved break with family and friends. Good-bye
and all the very best to the students and families who are leaving
Fairhills.
We know that you will continue to learn, grow and achieve in
your new environments. Take care
Moi

ATTENDANCE
Please note from the beginning of Term 3 in accordance with the
Education Department’s Policy and Guidelines, all schools must
contact parents/carers on the same day as an unexplained student
absence.
The same-day notification requirement supports the safety and
wellbeing of all students. Schools
need to know when and why a child is absent and parents/carers
need to know if their child is not at
school. Going to school every day is the single most important
part of a child’s education.
We will be contacting parents/carers via Compass SMS no later
than 10am if we find that a student is not in attendance and we
have not been notified. The Compass SMS system will begin in the
first 2 weeks of term.
Parents/carers are required to ensure their child attends school
every day and have an
obligation to contact the school to notify us of their child’s
absence.
Parents/carers should inform the school in advance of known
upcoming absences, or on the
day of absence.
In addition, in order to implement this requirement, it is
essential that parent/carers provide
schools with their most up-to-date contact details.
If a child is late, after 9am, they must sign in at the office
to ensure your child’s attendance is
accurate; otherwise, you may receive a Compass SMS.
There are a number of ways you are able to notify the school of
a student’s absence
COMPASS (preferred option, as it updates your child’s attendance
data automatically)
Phone 9758 3007
As we begin this new notification option through Compass, we ask
for your patience and
understanding in the first few weeks. If you do receive a
Compass SMS asking about your child’s
absence and you believe it is incorrect, please just contact our
office and we can double check any
concerns. Our number one goal is ensuring the safety of your
child. Thanks in advance for your
understanding.
Mrs Debby DAVIDOVIC has decided to retire. This means that Mrs

Behind the scenes: Student connections and support
We believe that academic progress is a key part of every student
at our school. However, we
equally care about and focus on the social and emotional
wellbeing of our students. At Fairhills,
we provide a huge amount of opportunities for students to
develop and excel in their social and
emotional learning. To give you further insight, here is a list
of some of the opportunities we
provide.
Lunch time clubs Monday: Cup stacking club and Homework club
Tuesday: Lego club Wednesday: Library open and story time Thursday:
Craft club Friday: Year 6 leader’s activity Each of these
opportunists are available to all students and are designed to
promote social connections for all.
Care groups Occurs generally every fortnight for all students
and teachers. The groups are multi age, with a different teacher in
charge. These groups enable students to build relationships across
the school and care for the people around us. The students also
build strong connections with different staff too. Social and
emotional learning is a key focus in Care groups.
Social groups These groups occur for specific students, giving
opportunities to develop positive skills to interact with
others.
Buddies This occurs between our Preps and Grade 5 students. The
students really enjoy the special friendships that are formed and
due to the way we have designed this, the relationships can remain
strong while being at the school for 2 years together.
Mentors Mentors are available to specific students and allows
for positive adult role models to support and invest into student’s
lives.
Breakfast club This occurs twice a week and allows all students
to have a positive start to the day, both in relationship building
and tummy filling.
BOLT and COLT These programs are available to specific students
and incorporate social and emotional skill development while
participating in either a cooking or bike related tasks.
Class room curriculum
While we have specific opportunities listed above, every student
also accesses the regular social and emotional learning that is
taught as a part of our planned curriculum.

Some holiday activities your kids might enjoy
You might like to print more like this or purchase a book from
your local newsagent or Kmart
etc. Your child might like to make their own versions too, on a
topic they love. Understandably,
screen time is an easy option during the holidays, but there are
other healthy alternatives to
break up the day and give your child new ways work their brains
(and give you space!).
Enjoy holidays!

Junior School News (P-2)
Reading: In Prep we are using Skippy Frog to help us read. We
skip a difficult word and keep reading, then try to solve the word.
Writing: In Prep, we are using our knowledge of letter sounds to
complete simple sentences that match our drawings. It is great to
see so many students thinking about sounds at the beginning and in
the words. We are remembering that capital letters are at the start
of our sentences.
In Grade 1 we are all awesomely aware and avidly attending to
alliteration. The Grade 2 students are extending their poetry
learning as they create non-rhyming poems. Grade 1 have been
learning to spell words with the ‘ff’ sound. Mathematics: In Prep,
we are learning to take smaller amounts from larger amounts and
find the left over numbers. We cross out the objects and count
backwards.
In Grade 1 and 2 we have been working on recognising and using
money. 2B have also been analysing their own graphs to answer data
questions using words like ‘most,’ ‘least,’ and popular.’
Reminders:
Homework – it’s really important that all our Grade 1 and 2
students are completing their homework each night. This will give
them more opportunities to have success in their weekly spelling
test and it is a school expectation that they complete and return
their homework each Friday.
PMP – The new time for Prep and Grade 1 PMP is after lunch on
Tuesdays. A notice has gone home to ask for parent helpers as we
would love to see you there! Please fill in the form and send it
with your child.
Lunch orders – Please make sure your child’s order specifies if
the food is for recess or lunch. The friendly helpers in the
canteen need to know so that they are ready to hand out the
snacks.
Science Incursion: All of the junior school enjoyed a fabulous
interactive incursion last week. The prep students were fascinated
by how things move and to see air make circles using a steam
machine. The Grade 1 and 2 students extended their knowledge of
mixtures and suspensions.
Enjoy the break and stay safe!

A Special Visit
On Monday 18th June P/1H and 3/4C were lucky enough to have a
special visit from Isabella and
Kaylee’s grandfather, Ken, who came to share his money
collection with us. Ken is an avid coin
collector and we really appreciated him offering to take the
time to share something so special to him
with our students.
The students discussed what money is and heard about some of the
history of money, how money is
made and why commemorative coins are made. Ken shared with the
students some coins that are
personally very significant and has on display a range of
different coins for the students to see and
explore.
It is wonderful to have members of our school community who are
willing to come and share their
knowledge with the students. In particular, we would like to
acknowledge the time and generosity
Ken showed in making up a small bag of coins for each of the
students to take home with them on
the day. Thank you Ken!

Senior School News (3-6)
Reading During these last two weeks of Semester Two, students
across Years Five to Six have been learning about other literary
elements that add to a unified story. These elements include
foreshadowing, symbolism, and figurative language. We also spent
time looking at predicting and using text to confirm – another
crucial comprehension strategy from CAFÉ reading. When predicting,
readers tell what they think will happen in the story. To confirm,
readers find out if their predictions were true, partially true, or
way off. Using this strategy gives readers the chance to make
connections to the text, think ahead, and become more engaged.
Writing During the past two weeks students have worked on improving
their ability to plan, draft and publish imaginative texts.
Students have explored using the ‘ISPACED’ openers to create more
interesting story starts, as well as using the 5W’s (What, Who,
Why, When and Where) to plan out their writing. We have been
increasing our use of VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and
Punctuation)
steadily, and will be sending home regular ‘Talk Homework’
sheets next term to create discussion
and allow pre-planning for ‘Big Write’ writing sessions each
week – stay tuned!
Mathematics In Mathematics, students have been focussing on
column addition (with decimals) and subtraction. Students have also
explored writing and identifying number sequences and patterns,
including fractions with different denominators, as well as
decimals.
