Pentecost Sunday May 30-31, 2020

From Fr. Anthony Ligato

“Receive the Holy Spirit” Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Have you ever wondered why the outpouring of the Ho

ly Spirit upon the Apostles and Disciples is called Pente-

cost? To answer that we need to go refer to the Hebrew Scriptures, Exodus The harvest was seen, as an outpouring of God's blessing upon land which

was the outward sign of the covenant between God and His people. This outpouring of upon the Land by God required a response from the people and Exodus de-

scribes that outpouring of thanksgiving on the part of the people. "You shall keep the Feast weeks with the first of the Wheat harvest at the close the year." The first of the wheat was the first fruits the harvest which would be

offered back to God in thanksgiving for the outpouring of the blessing of the crops. The land which the people of Israel occupied was a dry and arid land before Israel took posses-

sion. Then the Lord blessed this promised land and it be-came a land flowing with milk and honey. The Jewish Feast Weeks as this Feast became known was also

known as Pentecost which means outpouring of God's Blessing. Today the Feast of Weeks is known the He-brew as Shavvot. For Christians Pentecost, is the outpouring

of Holy Spirit on God’s people. Our own celebration of Pentecost is in relationship with the Jewish Feast of Pentecost, they are both an outpouring, one

an outpouring of God's blessing on the harvest and the oth-er an outpouring of God's blessing of the harvest which will be made possible by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit

on the Church. This outpouring of the Holy Spirit is known to us as Pentecost. We are the workers in the field who have been blessed by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit as

we gather the harvest. And we are the harvest itself made possible by the outpouring of God's spirit. We then are of-fered back to God as first fruits of the harvest. How do we offer ourselves back to God in Thanksgiving? By the turn-

ing over our lives to the Lord. We must empty ourselves so that the Holy Spirit may fill us with the gifts and the fruits of the Spirit.

Jesus is the outpouring of those first fruits on the cross. It is from the cross that all blessings flow. On the night before He died, He promised His disciples in John 14:16-17, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of Truth.” It will be

through the sending of an Advocate, the Holy Spirit that will bring about a great blessing of the harvest of souls. When He appears in the upper room to the disciples, “Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20: 20-22) We have received the first fruits of the Holy Spirit; now how shall we thank God for the outpour-ing of the Holy Spirit? By offering ourselves as the first fruits of the harvest to God in service to the Church. It is the Holy Spirit that gives us the ability to not only offer ourselves as first fruits of the harvest, the Holy Spirit allows us to gather others so that they may become the first fruits of the harvest as well. The gifts we have been given are not simply given for our own use, rather they are given to build up the entire church. “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different works, but the same God who produces all of them in eve-ryone.” (1 Cor. 4-6) St. Paul writes those words to the Church in Corinth (l Cor.12:3b-7,12-13) to re-mind each of them that they are called to a ministry based on their gifts from the Holy Spirit. These spir-itual gifts are poured out on all the baptized. "To eve-ryone, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one the Spirit gives wisdom in dis-course, to another the power to express the same Spirit who produces and distributes all gifts. St. Paul goes on to say, “For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.” (1 Cor. 12:12) These gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to renew the face of the earth. (Psalm 104) Yours in Christ, Fr. Anthony Ligato

LIFE LONG FAITH FORMATION

Please contact Barbara Berger in the Faith Formation Office with any questions about the information on this page. Please continue to send your “Silver Lining” stories with us!!! Use the term silver lining when you want to emphasize the hopeful side of a situation that might seem gloomy on the surface. The com-mon expression "Every cloud has a silver lining" means that even the worst events or situations have some positive aspect. SACRAMENTS The celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation will be rescheduled for the fall of this year. We continue to work with St. Jude’s and St. Joseph’s on a new date. We will let our families know as soon as we do!

Confirmandi and sponsors will continue to receive research topics and questions for faith sharing. Text, email or call me with any questions.

Plans for the date for the rescheduled First Eucharist celebration continues too!!!

SERVICE PROJECTS- TEMPORARILY ON HOLD—Meal Ministry & Birthday Bags

Project: DAWN

We are asking that clothing NOT be left in the clos-et at church. We are presently switching over from winter to summer clothing, and have not yet been given the okay for distribution. Storage is limited! We continue to work on new guidelines for distri-bution of food and clothing. We will post plans in our bulletin and on our Facebook page, when we can resume. We are offering our supply of food and personal hygiene items to our neighbors by donating them to others group in our community who are distributing. Please continue to pray for the safety and health of all of our neighbors that we usually help. Your generosity reaches so many more people than you will ever know!!!

CHILDREN’S BIBLE STORIES Our children love to hear stories. That includes children of all ages! To help keep our children con-nected to the church during this time of seperation, a weekly recording of a Bible story, a craft activity suggestion, and a weekly challenge will be sent to their parents via email address and text. These simple stories from the Bible will help to re-inforce the Gospel messages from our Sunday read-ings. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR POSITIVE RESPONS-ES I RECEIVED THIS PAST WEEK TO THIS NEW (FOR US!) ON LINE APPROACH TO BIBLE STUDY AND FAITH SHARING! VOLUNTEERS CAN SIGN UP TO HELP SHARE THEIR FAVORITE STORIES WITH OUR CHILDREN !!! I am asking that any Junior High School or High School students, or adult who would like to lead one of these “classes” to contact me at 518-225-4343 or by email. A “lesson plan” with a child’s version of the Bible Story and activities will be sent to you well ahead of time. OR if you have a favorite story to share from the Bible, we can help design your lesson plan!!! We will make arrangements (with social distancing), for the recording. A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR NEW VOLUNTEERS THAT SIGNED UP WEEK, FOR THEIR WILL-INGNESS TO SHARE THEIR FAITH WITH OUR YOUNGEST PARISHIONERS!!!! CONTACT BARBARA BERGER TO SIGN UP @[email protected].

THIS PROJECT WILL BE ONGOING ALL SUMMER !
