FULLY ACCREDITED AFDA is registered as the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, and is a private higher education institution which offers higher certificate and degree programmes that are registered by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Our programmes are accredited and we participate productively in the ongoing reaccreditation and quality assurance processes of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) to ensure the quality of our programmes. The DHET certificate number for AFDA is 2001/HE07/012. From its early beginnings in 1994 of 6 students, a rented VCR and broken TV, AFDA has become one of the leading institutions of its kind in the world today. It has produced some of the top filmmakers and actors in South Africa today and has made a significant contribution to developing a sustainable local entertainment industry. AFDA films are exhibited at numerous international festivals and have been broadcast worldwide, winning many prestigious awards, including the Student Academy Award winner and Cannes festival finalist in 2006 and multiple SAFTAS (South African Film and Television Awards) since 2007. AFDA is a full member of CILECT - the International Association of Accredited Film and Television Schools. HIGHER CERTIFICATES The HC courses are 1-year foundation programmes designed to offer students access to the first year of the undergraduate degree. The HC also works as an exit level higher certificate equipping students with skills that can place them in the entertainment industry in assistant positions. TECHNICAL & PRODUCTION & ART DEPARTMENT Introductions to camera, grips, lighting, multi-cam studio, stage rigging, production co-ordination, art department, wardrobe make-up & styling and stage management. RADIO & PODCASTING Introductions to radio programming, scheduling, studio, field recording and sound mixing. BACHELOR OF ARTS The BA degrees are 3-years full-time and offer students the opportunity to discover their aptitude in 1st year in order to progress and specialise in areas of their strength through 2nd and 3rd year. Outcomes in the BA degree include short films, television promos or productions, stage production or music performance show depending on discipline selection. FIRST YEAR (DISCOVER) 1st year is about finding your vocation with the opportunity to select multiple (6-8) disciplines from 1-2 schools over the year but segmented semesterly. SECOND YEAR (BOOT CAMP) In 2nd year, you will have begun to specialise in a minimum of 2 disciplines within 1 school. Even though you are taking less disciplines, the intensity and rigour of your learning is taken to the next level. AKA Boot Camp. THIRD YEAR (YEAR OF THE ARTIST) 3rd year is about you developing your personal artistic expression in your area of specialisation as well as understanding and deepening artistic relationships with your network of peers. FESTIVALS The Experimental & Graduation Festivals are public showcase events of your entertainment productions where the ability to engage intended audiences becomes the ultimate test of the degree. POSTGRADUATE The AFDA Postgraduate School is focused on developing innovative research, origination, production and distribution of entertainment concepts for both local and international markets and audiences. The Honours (full-time) and MFA (part-time) degrees follows the same principle of AFDA’s outcomes-based undergraduate degrees, with a postgraduate-level focus on Research Led Practice/Practice Led Research and associated research methodologies to strengthen outcomes. Students ultimately develop the capacities to communicate and successfully apply problem-solving strategies for self-management, co-operation and team work, as well as a commitment to life long learning and professional values. Over the last fifteen years, the AFDA Postgraduate School has produced a large network of graduates who have made a significant contribution to the South African Entertainment industry. A large percentage of commercials, feature films, television series, music and retail content are produced by AFDA Postgraduate School Alumni.
