WE ANSWER GOD’S CALL IN WORSHIP

You are welcome here at St. John. We invite you to share in fellowship of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Please sign our guest book in the entryway. If you live in the area, and do not have a church home, please consider making St. John your regular home for worship and growing together in faith. If you wish to become a member, please indicate this in the book that is passed during worship. Then talk with pastor for the next steps.

We have a nursery during 10:30 service for children up to age 5 who may not be ready to experience the entire worship time.

As often as we celebrate the Sacrament of the Altar, we do so in faith, receiving the bread and wine as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sin that He purchased on the cross. More than a symbol, but His gift of grace for all who believe.

We Worship God in liturgy in response to His love:1st Sunday “Let Us Enter In” w/Communion2nd Sunday “Blended Liturgy”3rd Sunday “Divine Service II 2nd Setting” w/Communion4th Sunday “Alternate Liturgy” 5th Sunday “Divine Service III”

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTERThe Risen Lord Jesus Is with Us in Holy Baptism and in ‘the Breaking of the Bread’ From “before the foundation of the world” until heaven and earth pass away, “the word of the Lord remains forever” (1 Peter 1:20, 25). This “living and abiding word of God” is the preaching of Christ Jesus, namely that God “raised him from the dead and gave him glory” (1 Peter 1:21, 23). By this living word, we “have been born again” to eternal life (1 Peter 1:23) and ransomed from our sinful and mortal life “with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18–19). This living word also calls us to repentance, to dying and rising in Holy Baptism “in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38). In this, we receive the Holy Spirit “for you and for your children and for all who are far off” (Acts 2:39). Through the preaching of His cross and resurrection, Jesus draws near to bring us “into his glory” (Luke 24:26). As He opens the Scriptures, He opens our minds to comprehend “the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27), and He brings us to know Him “in the breaking of the bread” (Luke 24:35).

HYMN OF INVOCATION “Days of Elijah”

These are the days of Elijah – declaring the Word of the LordAnd these are the days of Your servant Moses - Righteousness being restoredAnd though these are days of great trials – of famine and darkness and swordStill we are the voice in the desert crying – prepare ye the way of the Lord

Chorus: Behold He comes, riding on the cloudsShining like the sun, at the trumpet callSo lift your voice, It's the year of JubileeAnd out of Zion's hill Salvation comes

And these are the days of Ezekiel – the dry bones becoming as fleshAnd these are the days of Your servant David – rebuilding a temple of praiseAnd these are the days of the harvest the fields are as white in the worldAnd we are the laborers in Your vineyard – declaring the Word of the Lord

Chorus: Behold He comes, riding on the cloudsShining like the sun, at the trumpet callSo lift your voice, It's the year of JubileeAnd out of Zion's hill Salvation comes

INVOCATION

P: In the name of the Father and the † Son and the Holy Spirit,

C: Amen.

WE CONFESS OUR SIN

P: As we prepare our hearts and minds for worship let us first confess our sins and be assured of his everlasting promise to forgive.

P: If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

C: But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

P: Let us confess our sins to God our heavenly Father.C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by

nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the Glory of your Holy name. Amen.

P: In the mercy of Almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ he gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

C: Amen.

therefore I will call on him as long as I live. 3 The snares of death encompassed me;

the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish.

4 Then I called on the name of the LORD: “O LORD, I pray, deliver my soul!”

5 Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful.

6 The LORD preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me.

7 Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.

8 For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling;

9 I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

10 I believed, even when I spoke: “I am greatly afflicted”;

11 I said in my alarm, “All mankind are liars.”

12 What shall I render to the LORD for all his benefits to me?

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD,

14 I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.

COLLECT (spoken by all)

O God, through the humiliation of You Son, You raised up the fallen world. SERVICE OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Acts 2:14a, 36–4114 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his

voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.

36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far

off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

R: This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE LESSON 1 Peter 1:17–2517 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for

and the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

HOLY GOSPEL Luke 24:13–3513 That very day two of them were going to a village

named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things

happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

THE APOSTLE’S CREED please remain seated

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, thecommunion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

SERMON “Didn’t Your Hearts burn within When You- Understood The Promise of Jesus’ Resurrection from His Word?”

Luke 24:13–35

As you walk through these resurrection accounts, ask questions:

Page 21: OFFERING Meditation€¦ · Web view2020/04/26  · ST. JOHN LUTHERAN CHURCH A Congregation of “The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod” 42 Alta Vista Rd., PO Box 1049; Eagle Point,

Ask why Jesus did not allow these disciples to recognize Him on this 7 mile walk. Ask yourself, are there things Jesus had not allowed me to recognize until He revealed them at just the right time?

Is it significant, that Jesus waited to reveal Himself until they invited Him to stay and at the moment, He broke the bread?

What do you naturally do when you learn something new about God and His gift of faith in His Word?

Write out the last thing that warmed you heart while reading, hearing, or remembering God’s word of promise.

Did you naturally think of who you could share it with?

Did they understand and rejoice?

“What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk? “asked the stranger on their way to Emmaus.

Can you imagine the look on faces of these two disciples of Jesus?

?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered

him,
