Reach Out.For the past several years, my passion for fitness and wellness has grown, and my desire to help others lead healthy lives has grown with it. Each time I walk the fitness floor and see new mem-bers I am excited to get to know them, know their fitness goals and listen to their concerns or questions. Through understanding our members, we start to learn how to serve our community.

I am the manager for the fitness center today because I was encouraged along my path to fit-ness by other members, group fitness instructors, and trainers here at the Orlando Fitness Center. Thanks to each and every one of you who saw my passion and desire and encouraged me to do a little bit more each day. YOU are the reasons I am here and trying to pass that encouragement on to others.

My challenge to each of you this month is simple, get to know one another. The more you know about your fellow gym-mates the more you can encourage one another on to new goals and new accomplishments. Do you know their names or are they only “the girl who is always on the leg press before BodyPump,” or “the guy who likes to do abs when I am on the Kinesis.” Please help us build our community and help each other reach a new level of fitness.

A’njanene Moitt Orlando Fitness Center Operations Manager

Yours to a Healthy100,

We’ve all heard of the phrase “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but do you know why this fruit is such a popular choice to keep us healthy? Studies have shown that apples have bountiful health benefits. Apples contain over 200 different nutrients which positively affect the body’s function. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average adult should fill half of their plate with fruits and vegetables for every meal. It is recommended for everyone to eat at least 2-3 whole fresh fruits per day (2-3 cups).

“Don’t peel your apple,” said Commit 2 Fit Personal Trainer Todd Couture. “Two thirds of the fiber and many of the antioxidants are found in the apple peel. One apple has around 80 calories, 5 grams of fiber and are fat, sodium and cholesterol free. Most apples are still picked by hand, so be sure to wash before eating.”

Here are a few of the many health benefits of adding more apples to your diet:

• Colon Cancer Prevention – Apples have a high level of pectin which is highly beneficial to the colon. One apple is 20% of the daily recommended intake (more than a bowl of cereal claiming “high fiber”). Apples are most known for their colon benefits and ability to aid in the body’s regularity.

• Protect against Parkinson’s Disease – Research has shown that people who eat fruits and other high-fiber foods gain a certain amount of protection against Parkinson’s disease. Scientists have linked this to the free radical-fighting power of the antioxidants contained in the apples.

• Diabetes Management – Women who eat at least one apple a day are 28% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who don’t eat apples. Apples are loaded with soluble fiber, the key to preventing blood sugar swings.

• Lower Cholesterol – Apples are able to lower LDL (low-density lipoprotiens-“bad” cholesterol). Studies have shown that people who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16%.

• Bone Protection – Apples contain phloridzin and boron that increase bone density and help protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis.

• Boost Immune System – Red apples contain an antioxidant called quercetin. Recent studies have found that quercetin can help boost and fortify your immune system, especially when you are stressed out. This fruit provides 14% of the daily value of Vitamin C which will also boost your immune system.

• Detoxify Your Liver – We are constantly consuming toxins, whether it is from drinks or food, and your liver is responsible for clearing these toxins out of your body. Apples nutrients assist with this in order to ensure your liver is pumping out the toxins properly.

• Other Health Benefits – Studies have shown that eating more apples may help lessen asthma problems, promote weight loss, decrease risk of heart disease, and aid in breast, liver, and lung cancer prevention.

Incorporating apples into your diet will help you lead a longer and healthier life. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and eating well will greatly impact the quality of your life. So make this fruit “the apple of your eye” too.

The Florida heat can be brutal during the summer, but that doesn’t mean you have to retire your running shoes or suspend your outdoor fitness activities.

Avoid Extreme TemperaturesThe most extreme heat occurs between 10am and 2pm. Try to ar-range exercise around these times when possible. Ideally, early morn-ing or late evening workouts will keep you safe from heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Summer AttireWear lighter material, light-colored clothing and short sleeves. Lighter material allows your skin to breathe and naturally regulates body temperature. Dark, bulky clothing attracts heat, which can put you at risk for heat exhaustion. Wear a wide-brimmed hat with breathable vents to allow air to pass through and help you cool down. Your hat will also protect you from sun exposure.

Keep HydratedIf you are thirsty, that means you are already dehydrated. During the summer you should increase your usual daily fluid intake. It is recommended to drink between 14 to 22 ounces of water be-fore working out. For every 15 minutes of exercise, drink at least six ounces of water. For exercise that exceeds an hour, you should refuel with a sports drink to help hydrate your body and replenish electrolytes lost through your sweat.

Sun ProtectionThe sun is the closest to the earth during the summer which means you are in greater danger of burning your skin. Excess sun exposure without the proper protection can lead to sun damage such as pre-mature wrinkles or even skin cancer. Make sure you apply sunscreen before going outside, this is necessary for your skin to have adequate time to absorb the lotion. Reapply as needed.

Community Outreach at the Fitness CenterThroughout the month of May the Orlando Fitness Center donated to a local charity coordinated by James Robertson, a Boy Scout troop leader and friend of Fitness Center trainer Todd Couture. James reached out to Todd in order to collect more items for ‘Families in Transition Program’, a local organization committed to helping homeless children within the Seminole County School System. Its focus is on serving the educational needs of these children and providing them with hygiene products, school supplies, as well as food and clothing.
